Pick a year

A Sunday morning stroll and a great coffee in, this debate popped into my head; choose a year to go back to and travel around watching the graps. I’ve been blessed to be able to travel to Japan and the US many times for runs of live shows, but if I had the time machine, 1994 is where I would land.

The Super J Cup, prime AJPW title matches, AJW gearing up towards the dome, W*ING, the birth of IWA Japan, the rise of Michinoku, the height of FMW, ECW hitting its stride, WCW’s best shows before Hogan killed the vibe. Dammit, take me there now!

1997 is my favourite year in wrestling history for Bret Hart vs. Steve Austin, Hart Foundation vs. Steve Austin, Sting vs.n.W.o minus Starrcade 1997 - fuck Hogan/Bischoff for that, and Taz vs. Sabu.

Four of the best matches in wrestling history as well:

Mitsuharu Misawa vs. Kenta Kobashi. AJPW. 20th January. *****.

Bret Hart vs. Steve Austin. WWF WrestleMania 13. Not only the 1997 MOTY, my pick for greatest wrestling match ever. *****.

Shawn Michaels vs. The Undertaker. WWF In Your House 18: Badd Blood. Best match of both. *****.

Rey Misterio Jr. vs. Eddie Guerrero. WCW Halloween Havoc. *****.

Without thinking about it too hard, I think I'd like to pick 2006, which was probably my peak year for indy wrestling viewing. I'd love to go back & see the entire ROH CZW feud in person, the first Dragongate 6 man over Mania weekend, a GHC Heavyweight Title defence in America with Marufuji vs Nigel, the entire year of Danielson, Aries & Strong's really good Tag Title run, Kings of Wrestling in ROH, to be there at that year's Final Battle for Danielson vs Homicide in New York City, there was IWA Mid South running a show with the brutal Low-Ki vs Necro Butcher match AND Hero vs Milano Collection AT, one of the better TPI tournaments from my memory (though 2007 stands out over that), Chikara was loads of fun with the Tag World Grand Prix featuring CP Munk & Colt Cabunny along side the cool Team DDT vs Team K-DOJO match, a really great Kings of Wrestling vs North Star Express match & then the KOW vs Skayde & Milano finals, the deeply entertaining run of Hero & Claudio as the first Chikara tag champs, where they were kind of goofy & Hero was still in his absurd cravate based offence that was deeply obnoxious in a really entertaining to hate way, there's a very under-rated Arik Cannon vs young Jon Moxley match, I think that year had a really enjoyable Kingston vs Sweeney feud where there was even a classic "hitting the face with a car" bit, that was the year The Colony showed up in its original incarnation of Fire Ant & Soldier Ant

In Japan you have NOAH with some fun stuff even if it's past its peak now, Marufuji winning the Heavyweight title, the year ends with Misawa's final reign, there's the Kensuke Sasaki 20th Anniversary show which as Tenryu & Katsuhiko Nakajima vs Sasaki & Kobashi, in All Japan there's Kojima's Triple Crown run which featured the defence against Suwama that kind of proved that Suwama was THERE, Nakajima & Sasaki were All Asia champs, Shuji Kondo was the dominant Junior Heavyweight champ, New Japan has the first New Japan Cup, Taichi has his first New Japan matches on the weird indy-like shows they run with guys like Tsubo Genjin & Badboy Hido & GENTARO appearing on New Japan shows, an extremely good Junior Heavyweight match at the end of the year between Minoru & Kanemoto, Tana vs Nakamura in Nagoya, Dragon Gate doesn't have the greatest year but Susumu Yokosuka's one of my favourite wrestlers & he has a super solid first Dream Gate title run & Stalker Ichikawa has matches with both Tenryu & Minoru Suzuki which I would love to see live.

Definitely a year I have a lot of fondness for even if I have no memories of WWE from that year. Oh, the amazing ECW PPV December To Dismember was that year, that'd have been hilarious to see live. That also means there was the Cena vs RVD One Night Stand match which I think would've been a lot of fun live, & Rey Mysterio vs Sabu. And that year also had some Benoit vs Finlay PPV match that was very good, MNM were there, London & Kendrick were obviously a fun team, could've done without the Vince McMahon vs God stuff, I think that was that year. TNA still had Monty Brown pouncing fools for at least part of the year, Christian Cage, Angle vs Joe, LAX with Hernandez just yeeting people. And it's TNA so there will be plenty of awful stuff that's at least funny bad.

i guess i'll take 1996, since @The Natural has the same taste as me but swooped in and called 1997.

being able to see the birth of the nWo would be my biggest #1, but watching the J-Crown tournament that summer would be a close 2nd. ECW was also hitting on all cylinders.

Great minds think alike as the saying goes, @twiztor. Happy to share 1997 with you!

There's two takes on this. Either you want to experience in person something special or you want to see stuff that is otherwise impossible to see because it never made tape. Sometimes you get the best of both worlds like in 1980 Portland where we know the heat Buddy Rose was getting and how special it was to see Martel and Piper as your lead babyfaces but you'd also get the Tuesday shows which were never taped. Early 70s Houston feels up there too with Johnny Valentine and Wahoo and Jose Lothario and Alfred Hayes and old man Bull Curry and the Funks coming in, etc.

It's even more true if you could travel around.

If I had the choice, I'd follow Terry Funk around and see all of his 1976 as NWA champion. We have almost none of it on tape.

I would probably opt to go back to 1971 and follow the Funk-Brisco tour like they were Springsteen.

Then I would find four-year old me and drop a few warnings.

It's quite possible that I actually saw one of those Terry Funk title defenses and simply don't remember it as we made about 3 or 4 trips to the Jacksonville matches before moving from Florida. I don't remember much of any of those cards. One thing I vividly remember is Dusty doing a Jesus pose with a chain wrapped around his neck and I'm 95% certain it was Ivan Koloff  holding the chain. So I guess my back-up would be to revisit all of those shows and maybe keep the damn program.

Hard agree with 1994. Not only do you get all that good stuff in Japan: All Japan Women being on fire, J Cup etc, it's also one of Mexico's best years. Give me the year where I can watch Volk Han, Jushin Liger, Aja Kong, Blue Panther, and Bret Hart all at the top of their game.

That makes me want to go back to the early 50s and watch Chicago wrestling with my great grandfather. My mom says he would watch it like he wanted to jump through the TV to attack Gorgeous George or whatever heel had him vexed that week.

That had to be the year that ground Terry into dust as champ. He was also partying for two so just imagine kicking it with him on the road. Your liver would run screaming.

The NWA champ touring schedule was fucking insane. . .

I feel like 1994 is a good choice if you just want to see great matches/events, but I don't think I want to rewatch any promotion's entire 1994.  It's one of those years where the highs are all time highs, but everything else is kind of average.  1997 is the exact opposite, sure there are great matches, but the value is in following everything week to week.  It might be fun to follow Flair in 89, or the Jumbo vs. Misawa feud from June 90 to June 91.

Since 96/97 has been taken many times over, I’ll take 1983. Use Shreveport as a base to hit up all things Mid South in OK/LA and could make the quick trip to Dallas for WCCW, Houston for Bosch. Irish McNiel’s tapings. Seems like a good time. Could catch very early WWF boom and JCP on TV. It’s all good.
