So does anyone with some knowledge of soap fandom know if people go nuts over who is getting "used well" or which storylines are being blown?  I know they sell magazines about them and the behind the scenes stuff.  Are people like "Eric Braedon keeps burying any new heel with any heat and it's killing the show? But they're just going to keep shoving Victor down our throats I guess!"

Absolutely. Y&R fans got tired of Victor killing the Genoa City territory, though he works tweener when not heel, he rarely goes full face.

They may be remedying that--with his recently returned son Adam, who is going to be the new Victor in due time.

  2. I may have some more thoughts about the overall show tomorrow (today in my time zone). They made a point to present Roman and Charlotte really well. From their eye-catching entrances to cool spots in their matches to how commentary praised them, they were made to feel like stars. I think they did a good job with Becky, but I can see how The Rock coming out felt like she was being rescued when she didn't need it. Obviously Brock, Cain and Tyson are treated as big deals. It seems like we have the directive going forward as to who will get the lion's share of publicity for SD going forward.

I know that's something you've talked about dealing with a lot on this board and in these kinds of discussions, and I am sorry, but I am legitimately dumbfounded here.

Your entire post dismissed what I had to say. You invalidated everything I said in an attempt of promoting feminism while disregarding me being a woman, and specifically a Black woman, because you seem to think my points are lesser than.

I don't know what year some of you are living in, but Kim Kardashian has spent a large part of her time recently working to free unjustly imprisoned black people and reform the criminal justice system. She actually helped to free several prisoners (17 within a three-month period this year) and she went to talk to POTUS about it while the political establishment of the left spent the last two and a half years wringing their hands and accomplishing their usual nothing.

The Kardashians also revolutionized the way that women's bodies are presented in media - thicker women are in style now, in stark contrast to the heroin-chic models that had been dominating the fashion industry for decades. You can't open up Instagram or Snapchat without seeing their influence. Kim is absolutely a feminist icon and there are a LOT of young women that would make that argument - whose opinions on feminism, by the way, are far more relevant than the opinions of any dude, let alone one pontificating on a wrestling message board.

Kim K has nothing to do with thicker women being in vogue. First, a lot of the body positivity talk is a façade. Second, Kim's figure was mostly given to her by a cosmetic surgeon. That's not an indictment on her, just the truth. Third, saying she popularized fuller figures opens a major can of worms. Queen Latifah has been a celebrity with a plus-size figure for around 30 years, for starters. And she's a hell of a lot more talented/respected.

I'm going to put it out here: the Kardashians/Jenners co-opt Black culture and reap the benefits without dealing with the tribulations of being Black.

Kris Jenner took Kim's sex tape and turn it into a commodity on which to build the family empire. Kim was just the means to the end.

Kim has done good work with helping wrongfully imprisoned people get released, but many more do the same thing without the fanfare. That's not on her, because we as a society cling to celebrity any chance we get. But for large sections of us, she's not a revered figure and for good reason.

  5. I think it's perceived aspiration. The Kardashians are seen living in mansions, wearing designer clothes, traveling the world in private jets. It seems so carefree. Then take wrestling, with sweaty people giving the appearance of beating up each other while an unruly audience screams for more violence. It speaks to why more women in the 12-34 and 18-49 demos watch reality TV.

It's the TV version of the rat vs the squirrel. Both are rodents. But one gets a pass for having an adorable fuzzy tail.

That makes more sense and is rather sensible, but headlines that scream about "TONY KHAN'S LIES!!!!1111one" and Meltzer being wrong or a shill or whatever get a lot more clicks because people are awful.

That's true, but I think that comes from how Cody framed the UK deal back in May. Mocking WWE's UK TV deal while suggesting Tony Khan would make sure AEW would have a better one.

Sometimes, it comes down to not saying anything until everything is in place. A lot of UK wrestling fans seem to think it's a rotten deal. I don't know. It feels like one of those moments where if nothing had been said earlier, few would care that much now.

  7. Naomi didn't even get a NXT run as it's currently constructed. She was part of NXT when it was still a game show. They sent her to the main roster to be a Funkadactyl, for crying out loud. She put in the work to continually get better, probably more so than any other WWE woman in recent memory. She still hasn't had a true rivalry with any of the 4HW. Shame.

  8. The lost generation talk is interesting. Because it's absolutely true, and I can see where the call-ups for The Shield and 4HW closed the door for a lot of talent. But the trains had already left the station. For the men, the Triple H Reign of Terror/Voldamort/Cena Domination did them in. For the women, it was the entire Divas Era.

  9. Naomi has no DUIs. She drove on a one-way street in the wrong direction, but she wasn't drunk and wasn't arrested. Both Usos have a DUI under their belt, but neither stem from Naomi's traffic violation.

WWE's way of pushing Naomi was to have her carry Lana for months, then drop the title to an ice-cold Natalya at SummerSlam 2017. She won the first-ever Women's Battle Royal at WM 34, but they did nothing with it.

Next female wrestler topic: I like Naomi. Anyone want to argue with me? Afterwards we can find common ground and grow closer as friends.

I've long believed Naomi could be just as popular as the 4HW or Alexa if pushed the same way. She's become a very good wrestler, has an cool moveset, with an inclusive gimmick that can potentially make lots of money. She's no worse on the mic than 3 of the 5 women previously mentioned. WWE doesn't see her as being worthy of promotion, and it's too bad.

  11. The KO-Shane story has the fatal flaw all Authority stories have: you can't get rid of a McMahon. Even if Shane "leaves", there's no reason his father or sister wouldn't give him permission to return. I can see this going to Team KO vs Team Shane at Survivors Series, anyway.

It's a waste of time. And I'm not someone who actively hates Shane.

The Bryan rope tie-up was scary. I can't imagine that was planned. Looked like he had pretty bad rope burn.

The Rowan line was head-scratching. I don't see a scenario where it would be intentional, but they have to be careful with that.

  12. On one hand, you want Rollins to show fear, because that gets over how menacing The Fiend really is. But at the same time, you don't want the Universal Champion to look like an extra from Prom Night 3.

Then again, it does tie into the notion that Rollins, for all his bluster, has always been something of a wimp. First he was part of The Shield, and that offered him protection. When he turned, he went running into the arms of The Authority. Over the past nine months, he's been endorsed by Triple H, Bret Hart and Stone Cold. Other than Ambrose going after him a couple of times, Rollins hasn't been challenged on what a garbage person he is. The Fiend reminding him of his past mistakes gives Rollins another dimension, and forces him to think about all the hurt he's caused. The Fiend messing with and ultimately breaking Rollins' spirit would be interesting.

Seth looks like the world’s biggest dork lying there and looking over at the Fiend.

And the rest of the time too. Huge dork.

I know what they're going for with Seth being scared of The Fiend. But you're right. Seth was crying more than Braun, who was actually getting Clawed. At least have Rollins crawl out of the ring to watch the drama from a distance. Don't have him crying in the corner like he just wet himself.

AOP's vignettes are better than Aleister's by a mile. They have focus and they got up to beat down some chumps already instead of reciting Edgar Allan Poe poems while drunk at Boiler Room Karaoke.

Onto @Burgundy LaRue's point.  Caring about something either brings you great joy or great regret.  Caring about wrestling hasn't brought me anything close to joy in a long time...but instead of letting it bring me down, I stopped caring.  You are seeing what happens when something people care about deeply consistently disappoints.  You can either admit that you're wasting time or lash out at everyone who points out the flaws in that thing you care about.

I'm fine with someone not enjoying the same things as me. I don't think WWE is perfect.

The problem is when I or others present another side, one that could be part of a wider discussion. It's dismissed because so many are jaded about the topic. It stops being fun talking about it. Why ask for another viewpoint, then brush off that POV when given?

I can sometimes tell if someone and I aren't far off in our takes. We're just coming from different perspectives. But something gets lost during the conversation. Then we both end up angry.

FYI to some folks: it doesn't help throwing personal accusations. I'm constantly amazed at how so many here don't want to be labeled, but have no problem doing it to someone else. That's always a JOY to read. ?

The point of being members of this board is to belong to a larger community. To hopefully enjoy each other's company and talk about any number of things. Disagreements will happen, and that's okay. It just seems like there's a more productive way of doing it.

Fascinating that they’re bringing it back just as the NFL band it after a high profile accident/fire.

I always figured that's why WWE stopped doing it. Not only is it expensive, but insurance on renting arenas cost more when doing it. Plus there aren't many people/companies that can do pyro safely. The risks outweigh the rewards, in many ways.

And people call me miserable. Have you tried investing time in other hobbies? Legit, it helps.

Speaking as a WWE fan--akin to being a three-legged zebra among the horses around here--your attempt at humor. . .is an attempt.

I would enjoy talking more with some of you about wrestling to learn more and give insight to another perspective--if I thought it would accomplish something. It won't. WWE fans are seen as dumb, mindless sheep who can't or don't think for themselves. After a while, there's little point in trying anymore.

  17. It'd be one thing if the shirts were ugly, but some effort was put into them. They didn't even try. Dream's new shirt is solid and I see the Pen & Pixel motif they're going for with Street Profits' black tee. But the rest should be included as gifts when you order real merch. Buy Johnny Gargano's new shirt and get BOA's tee absolutely free! Just pay separate processing and handling.

  18. Lots of stuff going on with this show.

Corbin-Gable was fantastic. Corbin winning was the better outcome. The gimmick is built for a heel and Corbin is a great sleaze when given room.

The gender reveal party was trainwreck TV elevated by everyone's performance. From Street Profits' animated responses to Titus' "His life is about to CHANGE!" to Slater and Hawkins' facial expressions--it all worked. Ricochet trying to talk reasonably to Bennett only to make things worse was also good. Graves calling Bennett a beta cuck was wild. I still have issues with the Maria/Mike story, but the segment was good.

Authors of Pain get a great reintroduction. And someone finally realized letting charismatic people express that charisma in their native language in pre-taped interviews is the way to go!

Women's tag match was fun. Lacey-Dana was short but good with both displaying solid offense.

Kane's "I still got it!" chant to himself was perfect, as was him coming to save Rollins (nice callback on their history) only to get Clawed by The Fiend.

My one big concern is how much they used The Fiend. They have to use him in small doses. Everything is working now because they leave us wanting more. If they go to the well too often, we know it's all downhill.

Can't say it was a boring episode.

I'll never understand the mentality people have of hiding health related things/not doing anything about them because they don't want to worry someone else. That sort of stuff does not go away on its own, and you're gonna cause those same people a lot more anxiety if you drop dead on them and they didn't even know you were sick.  My mom is the same way. I hope your dad gets it treated and feels better soon.

Speaking only for myself, I often say nothing because either someone will think I'm overselling or I assume they don't care in the first place.

I know that's not what you're talking about in your post. But I wanted to give a different perspective.

They absolutely do not. Keeping the intergender stuff out of the company is one of the few things they've gotten almost totally right. If it returns, I will gladly do what so many others seem to have trouble doing: stop watching WWE.

The 24/7 title is a comedy prop as currently used. Nearly all the wins are by rollup. If the women were getting thrown down stairs to win, it would be a different story. But as it stands, I don't see a problem.
