AEW TV - 2/7 - 2/13/2024 - First Come, First Swerved
tbarrie replied to Dolfan in NYC's topic in ALL ELITE WRESTLING
Great show, but one kvetch: why exactly did they put Swerve at #1 in the rankings last week and Hangman at #2? If it had been the other way around, Hangman saying that Swerve had to beat him to become #1 contender would make some sense. Instead it was completely out of left field. -

But that means we have different opinions! On the internet! Are we now mortal enemies?

Don't give in to hate, Odessa. No good can come of it.

Fair enough, but it's not clear to me that a lack of pop culture trivia knowledge is even deserving of a friendly ribbing. That still seems pretty obscure to me, though I'll confess it's closer to something an alleged wrestling journalist should have known.

I realize an obsession with Seinfeld used to be one of the board's running jokes, but did we really just spend over a page mocking a guy for only having a vague sense of how long Seinfeld has been off the air?

It works fine when held sideways and used as a traditional controller. Doesn't even destroy your thumbs on long play sessions the way all modern gamepads do.

The Wiimote was from Nintendo, and it's still the best video game controller of all time. Simple, elegant, and versatile. Not its fault that so many game designers didn't know what to do with it.

Rock is kind of looking at him disdainfully though. Seems disrespectful.

AEW TV - 1/31 - 2/6/2024 - Ranking in the Dark
tbarrie replied to Dolfan in NYC's topic in ALL ELITE WRESTLING
Why are they seemingly feuding with just the Best Friends, anyway? Didn't the Acclaimed-Bullet Club Gold thing start because they both wanted a piece of United Kingdom? But instead of uniting to face their common enemies, they've united to... do what, exactly? -
Which two rooms did you like?

I liked that Swerve and RVD started their match with a counter-argument to the old argument "When RVD throws a chair at you, don't catch it". As Swerve so considerately demonstrated, if you don't catch the chair, you just get a steel chair bouncing off your face. You haven't really improved your position. -

Yeah, I'd been meaning to post something similar. Swerve picking one of his own minions works well enough, but RVD would be a real head-scratcher. Best I can come up with is that, in story, they had to get the okay of the person they chose. That would limit Hangman's options somewhat. It would almost certainly rule out Mox, who seems like the obvious choice - a violent psychopath who wins almost all his matches and beat Swerve recently in the Continental Classic. -
Dude, read your username. You're not Chaotic Metal.

So any word on how well Dynamite did in the ratings this week, particularly the final quarter hour? I'm curious whether Minoru Suzuki is, in fact, a ratings draw.

Upcoming Video Game Releases (2024 & Beyond)
tbarrie replied to RIPPA's topic in COMPUTERS & GAMES & TECH
I know the reasonable and mature response to Rippa's quote is to be angry at Blizzard and sorry for the people who lost their jobs. But I can't help being amused by the way the statements in the second paragraph are attributed as "said the people". It sounds like something from the Gettysburg Address. -
My recollection was that they scrapped the angle because of the Benoit murders/suicide; they thought it would be in poor taste to go forward with a story about a major character's death in the wake of an actual tragedy in the wrestling world. Wasn't Vince's funeral scheduled for the Raw right after the deaths? Everything's relative. Even Wall Street investors were smart enough to know that Trump was a buffoon who had never successfully run anything, but "smart enough to know wrestling storylines aren't real" is a higher bar that they apparently couldn't make it over.

I would say if it's presented as part of the show, he's talking about the character. If it's at a press conference or something like that, he's talking about the performer. But the fact that wrestling hasn't yet worked out a clear protocol to let the audience know which they're dealing with is one of my peeves with the industry. It's one of the ways the industry is still haunted by the ghost of kayfabe (to its detriment, in my opinion).

Before the rankings went away the first time, the AEW champ and the TNT champ were both listed as champions at the top of the men's singles division rankings. So there was only one set of contenders for both belts. That might look strange now that there are approximately 46 men's singles titles in AEW, though. And with Swerve, Hangman, and Wardlow all gunning for the #1 contendership for the AEW title while Copeland is simultaneously working his way up the rankings for a TNT title shot, it might get confusing unless they go with a separate list of contenders for each title. Which brings up the questions of who gets listed as contenders for which title and who decides that. But those are arguably the sort of questions best quietly ignored.

Yeah, but it's a real-life ban, not an in-story ban. When Punk and Cena randomly threw a piledriver into one of their matches (and I don't even remember who drove whose pile), the announcers didn't say anything about how it should be a DQ. Or did they? Though I do sort of like the idea that piledrivers are banned unless you do a flip into them. Sadly I don't think the game has a move-boosting card named "Flipping", but the next time I play I might say that Corkscrew Piledrivers and Flying Piledrivers are fine, just not regular Piledrivers.
