  1. The Top 25 Horror Films since The Shining. Pretty decent list. http://www.vulture.com/2013/10/25-best-horror-movies-since-the-shining.html
  2. I'm currently rewatching Don't Go in the House (1980). It's a very sleazy Psycho knockoff where the Norman Bates type character likes to use fire instead of knives. It's got good amount of nudity, great atmosphere, an awesome score! Check it out if you like exploitation cinema!
  3. I can't wait until the ShowShow podcast do their 7th Annual Halloween Spooktacular in which they review one horror film a day every day in October. Outside the Cinema also have their Halloween Throwdown the last Saturday of October in which the host Bill By Force on their live video feed shows a bunch of horror films and does fun stuff in between while listeners have a live chat. It's usually 12 noon to midnight.
  4. The Wicker Man [1973] - This was a rewatch and I like even more than the first time I watched it. Alucarda [1977] - Really dug this. This is the trashy, distant Mexican cousin to The Devils but with more witchery. "A young girl's arrival at a convent after the death of her parents marks the beginning of a series of events that unleash an evil presence on the girl and her mysterious new friend, an enigmatic figure known as Alucarda." You have big hair, a shitload of screaming, demon possession, a good amount of nudity, Satanic rituals, an disappearing and reappearing man in bad goblin makeup, screaming, a ton of atmosphere, fog, and even more screaming. The Conjuring [2013] - Another rewatch and I still really love this film and think it's above all of the other haunted house films that came out in recent years by a very large margin.
  5. I had thought I saw Trick R Treat [2007] before but I realized that I had not finished it for whatever reason. I'm gonna treat this as a first time watch. I can't believe I didn't watch this film more. I absolutely loved this film. Nothing beats a great anthology horror film and this might be my favorite as I'm typing this. I think this film, along with Carpenter's Halloween, really sums up the atmosphere and the wonder of Halloween. I love how each story, in one way or another, are interconnected and how characters who keep to the traditions of the Halloween are spared and those who mock it or try to cause harm to others are not. I love how it shows the various ways people look at the holiday, from the traditions to kids trick or treating to teenagers partying and looking to get laid and the always present grouch. I really don't want to give anything of the plot away but if anyone hasn't seen this, they really need to check this out. I'm gonna have to watch this all time. This will be high on my First Time Watch list at the end of the year. Blood Rage [1987] - A slightly generic slasher but stands out as having actually really good gore and doesn't shy away from it. A man is sent to the insane asylum for a brutal murder committed by his evil twin. He breaks out to show his innocence while his twin begins to kill and blame it on him again. This also has a pretty downbeat ending which I think is quite refreshing from slasher standards. Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer [1986] - This was a rewatch. If there was a horror film that still really frightened me, this would be it (and William Lustig's MANIAC). Besides being based on a true life serial killer, everyone is amazing in this as they protray the chacters with some weight and that home invasion scene is downright frightening. Actually everything in this film is. I didn't quite care for this when I was younger as I was going through a hardcore gore phase. While this did have some really good gore effects, this isn't like a Fulci film or a Hong Kong CAT III film. I've been thinking of doing a top 31 favorite horror films list and this would be pretty high on it. The Legend of Boggy Creek [1972] - I really wanted to like this more than I did. This is a faux-documentary film based on a Sasquatch like creature running around the backwoods of Arkansas. While I did enjoy the atmosphere of this, I think there were a few too many slow moments that kinda bogged down the pacing of this. Elvira, Mistress of the Dark [1988] - I wanted to watch something fun and of the season and I decided to watch this. Not much to say about this. If you enjoyed the character, you should get something out of this. I like the character and found this to be funny (not immensely funny but funny nonetheless).
  6. I've seen a few horror films the last couple weeks and will be going head on next week: The Mummy [1932] - This was really quite fun and I love the atmosphere in this. I'd love to see Hammer's version of this film which I heard was better. Oculus [2014] - I usually love haunted house films, well as long as they're period films like The Conjuring, but I wasn't so sure when watching the first half hour of this. I usually don't care about the whole modern 'ghost hunting' type gimmick but this got better as the plot unfolded. Although I do wish it would've been more vague Other than that, I had a good time watching this. Graduation Day [1981] - This is your standard early 80s slasher film. While it's definitely not remarkable or intelligent but a good time was had while watching this. This would be a fun film to show at parties. I had seen quite a few clips from this from various documentaries about horror and slasher films. IMDB summary: After a high school track runner, named Laura, suddenly dies from a heart attack after finishing a 30-second 200-meter race, a killer wearing a sweat suit and a fencing mask begins killing off her friends on the school track team one by one. The suspects include the track coach Michaels, Laura's sister Anne who arrives in town for the funeral, the creepy school principal Mr. Guglione, and Laura's strange boyfriend Kevin. Next up is BLOOD RAGE [1987].
  7. I really dug the Maniac remake and thought that Elijah Wood put in a very good performance. It's more of a remake in name only with only a couple scenes that ties to the original. The original is a top 5 horror flick of the 80s. In my book, Joe Spinell puts in the best performance in horror history in that.
  8. Does anyone here listen to the Projection Booth podcast? They're probably my favorite movie podcast along with The Gentlemen's Guide to Midnite Cinema. Every week, they take one film review it and have a thorough job in getting as much information about it as possible with having interviews with people involved with the making of the film and possibly scholars. Their best episodes are probably Blade Runner, Love and Death, Starship Troopers and Robocop. Their latest episode was the infamous XXX classic Waterpower starring Jamie Gillis. They've done several adult films like The Devil in Miss Jones and Boys in the Sand. They do point out that these are great films or very interesting at worst but adult films can be seen as legit films along with anything that is released in the mainstream.
  9. Martyrs is incredible and my favorite of the French horror films of last decade. The boutique label Vinegar Syndrome which releases many forgotten sexploitation, softcore and hardcore XXX and horror films will be releasing Graduation Day on Sept. 9th and Dracula Sucks starring Jamie Gillis in October!
  10. I already have my Halloween viewing list ready to go for the most part. I'm most definitely sure there will be plenty of surprises that I will watch. First time watches: Re-watches: I plan on starting to watch exclusively a few days after Labor Day.
  11. Baba Yaga and Cemetery Man should also be looked at for the European brackets. I almost support doing a poll type thing for this than a tournament as there's so many films. Lone Wolf and Cub and Lady Snowblood are not hard to find. There's a lot of Japanese films that are readily available.
  12. I decided to rewatch Grindhouse last night for no particular reason yesterday on blu-ray. When I saw this in theaters in 2007, I had the general opinion that Planet Terror was the better of the double feature and the faux trailers were the best of the entire feature. Watching it this time, I like Death Proof far, far more. Every time I watch it, I like DP more and PT less. I would have much preferred Planet Terror being the opening trailer with Machete being the Rodriguez feature. I flat out love Death Proof now. It's such a great hang out film with some horror elements that's closer to the 70s flicks than what Planet Terror was to 80s zombie/infected people films like Nightmare City. DP seems like a film I could watch several times a year.
  13. Night of the Creeps is on Instant. Shit! I forgot Return of the Living Dead! That's my favorite! It's a top 10 horror film for me.
  14. Night of the Creeps is my favorite horror comedy.
  15. I'm the type that doesn't need it to be October to watch horror but September and October is a special time for me, my fiance and my siblings that it becomes horror/Halloween centric. Once Labor Day is over, I start working on decorations and getting my costume pieced together (which i need to find more pieces). I also start watching nothing but horror and Halloween related shows. I got a collection of Halloween specials for Treehouse of Horror, King of the Hill, Roseanne and Home Improvement as well as Elvira's MTV Halloween special, Witches Night Out, Once Upon a Midnight Scary, Ghostwatch and some others. I'm a sucker for anything Halloween related.
  16. I was thinking about the comic book adaptation talk from a few pages ago and it seems like one of the things people assume is that it's a relatively new thing to make films out of comic books. While that may be somewhat true for the superhero comics but there are so many adaptations of all kinds of comics that it'll be almost impossible to do a tournament of. I could see there being a poll and people submitting their Top 100 as there's hundreds, if not thousands of films based off comics (especially if you count manga). Besides the superhero comics, there's Road to Perdition, Heavy Metal, Riki Oh: The Story of Ricky, Lone Wolf and Cub series, Weird Science, Creepshow, Baba Yaga, Danger: Diabolik, Cemetery Man, Persepolis I also really, really love Batman: The Dark Knight Returns that was released last year. Besides Tim Burton's Batman, I really prefer the animated adaptations of the comic along with Mask of the Phantasm and Year One. All Star Superman was a great film as well. Not a big fan of Superman but I really loved the arc the story was based on.
  17. So yeah, I watched COLLEGE KICKBOXERS! What an awesomely fun film! It's quite an endearing save the rec center type film but with martial arts! The fashion alone in this film makes it a must see. Our hero alone, wears nautical striped sleeveless shirts, and even tucks every shirt he has into his high pants even his tank tops. There are zubaz, wallet chains, a fanny pack siting, long butt bikinis, poofy satin pants, loafers in the sand and much much more! The martial arts used in this is quite good and there's some good fight scenes as well. The teacher is a master's master! Also check out the Gentlemen's Guide to Midnite Cinema's review on this in their episode #298. IMDB: "A college freshman who trains in martial arts is beaten up at work by a racist gang. His co-worker, a Chinese cook, beats the gang up and trains the young man in kung fu. When a tournament is to be held, the teacher tells the student that he will not teach him for money. However, when the gang beats up the student's best friend, the student now must make the choice of entering the tournament or keeping the promise to his teacher."
  18. I was watching Commando for the 100th time this morning and it got me thinking about what my favorite 80s action films are. Compiling the list, I see I'm quite partial for Arnie films and Italian and Indonesian knockoffs. The biggest film that I left off is Die Hard which I didn't know where to place. I usually like my action films to be a bit shorter and punchier. Probably why I love the Indonesian action films so much. That and it looks like people may have died during the stunts.
  19. Fuck, I spent nearly an hour writing a post about what I watched this week and my browser crashed. I'm not rewriting it again. Anyone who knows anything about movies should have seen thses already: Mutantes: Punk Porn Feminism Scorpio Rising We Were Here Cinemania Incident at Oglala BlankCity
  20. I overall had a list of 56 films I enjoyed the most from 2013. I do admit that I Saw the Devil is rather low. I adored the set pieces for Hellraiser 2. All That Jazz and The Devils are both kinda tied for me. I love them equally. I like ATJ for how it basically blends 8 1/2 with 70s American cynicism. That and Schieder is amazing! I had some big ones that missed the cut like Koyaanisqatsi, Detour, Before the Devil Knows You're Dead, This is Spinal Tap, Die Hard (I never realized that I hadn't seen the entire film until I started watching it and remembered that I had only seen clips), It's a Wonderful Life. I loved all of those and wanted to fit them in but somehow couldn't on this draft. I also left out trashterpieces like Pieces and Never Too Young to Die.
  21. I forgot to post this last month but this was a project that I love to do every year and it's my list of favorite first time watches. Check out the series of blogs from www.rupertpupkinspeaks.blogspot.com for a lot of different lists. My Top 30 First Time Watches of 2013:
  22. I finally started to watch THE LONE WOLF AND CUB film series. I can't believe it took me this long to get to these films as they are possibly the absolute coolest films ever put to celluloid. Ultra violent, a bit sleazy, great simple stories and the most badass protagonist ever. Samurai films are up there as my favorite genre so these films are right up my alley. The first one has the most plot in it as it introduces all of the main characters and the need for revenge by Tomisaburo Wakayama (who has the badass quiet charisma going on) who was the top executioner for the shogunate whose wife is murdered and he is accused of treason by a power hungry sect. From there on, him and his infant son go on a path of destruction that brings glee to the hearts of all exploitation film fans. Whether it be sleazy ronin, female ninjas, or even the governments top samurai, no one will stand in the Wolf's way of his revenge! I honestly can't do these films justice but they are extremely worth checking out and any genre film fan worth their salt need to seek these out!

  24. I finished watching that last episode today so I didn't put it higher but I did really love it. I love the whole government conspiracy/Deep Throat angle that they had in the first season. The ending was an awesome way to end a season that makes one crave the next which I will start tonight.
