    Bret Hart:

"I seem to be as revered or popular as I’ve ever been - and it’s maybe because of the salutes I’ve been getting from guys like (CM) Punk, and FTR, different wrestlers have mentioned my name, or do something that I did in the ring as a nod or a salute to me, and I appreciate all that. I think CM Punk alone has done a lot to remind wrestling fans to take a look back at some of the stuff that I was doing, and how good it was.

And I think it’s starting to stand out now where it’s like - in my honest opinion, without trying to sound too boastful, they’ve pulled the curtain back on wrestling so much. So now we know the whole thing’s a show, and they’re just really good physical actors, and that is what it is.

But you watch my wrestling and you go, jeez, he was the best. I think I made it look more real than anybody all the time. I made your stuff look good, I made my own stuff look good, nothing looked rehearsed. There’s so much I think in today’s wrestling that’s so badly rehearsed, over and over."

Bret Hart deserves all the flowers.

I love Bret, I truly do. And I largely agree with what he's saying. But it's funny to me that he's always the one saying it.

  2. This was the first wrestling I've watched of any kind since I think Forbidden Door, so maybe I was just really hungry for wrestling, but I thought this show was absolutely fantastic. The only matches I didn't really care for were the 4-way tag (do we really need the Bucks challenging for, and probably winning, the belts again?), the Jericho 6-man and the FTR tag. I love FTR but they just don't work as well as babyfaces to me. Everything else I loved. The atmosphere around the Swerve/Hangman match elevated it so much and both guys are great anyway. Danielson/ZSJ lived up to the hype moreso than the Danielson/Okada match (probably because Okada just isn't actually that good) and was my match of the night. I was proper bummed out when it ended as I easily could have gone for 10 or so more minutes of that. Christian/Darby was nutso in the best possible way. Darby really is a madman and that second stair bump was uncomfortable to watch but I love heels attacking babyfaces while they're on stretchers so I was laughing out loud at that. I do wonder why Sting took so long to go out there though. As for Adam, even though I haven't been interested in anything he's done for a good long while, and I acknowledge he's been pretty lame for the longest time (at least since that feud with Kane where he murdered Paul Bearer), I still like the guy and marked out for his debut. I do think he can bring value if used correctly, and this just seem like a good way to start.

I enjoyed everything else to varying degrees with a special shoutout to Stat and Julia, and overall this was a really enjoyable viewing experience after some pretty profound modern wrestling malaise.

  3. Danielson has shown pretty consistently that he thinks his injury history is fair game for use as a storytelling tool in his matches. I kinda think we just have to accept that as a possibility when watching his matches. Given how obsessed with wrestling he seems to be, I doubt he sees anything as too sacred to be used for pops or sympathy.

  4. Funnily enough, I haven't seen any Julia Hart stuff since she joined the House of Black, so since her entrance was getting bigged up, I jumped onto youtube this morning to check it out. I was enjoying it, but then when the camera zoomed in on her for her close-up, JR cuts in with "she's a mysterious, beautiful jezebel", and I just had to laugh. I tend to cut him more slack than he probably deserves but that snippet was all the criticisms against him writ large.

  5. Like with all things, context matters. How old was the kid? Why did MJF pick that kid in particular? Was there an interaction between them before the drink was thrown?

I don't remember all this hubbub when Sasha was messing with Izzy. Most people thought that was the coolest shit ever actually (and yes, I realise on paper that MJF went further).

  6. Yeah, I don't really mind Big Bill. I just think the Firm are one of the worst things in the company and don't really deserve to be rewarded. I mean, Rush could murder OC and transition the belt to Starks, having better matches while a shitty faction looks on along the way. Or if it has to be a big boy, throw Lance Archer a bone.

  7. AEW is so frustrating to me, because they've got all the pieces to be one of the best promotions ever, but the way the company is booked is always holding them back. It's like, there's all these cool people, but half of them don't interact with one another, or just disappear for weeks on end, while you have guys like Jericho (who I still think has value) just constantly in my face. I mean, Claudio is one of the best wrestlers in the world, but what is he fucking around with? They couldn't come up with anything for Miro? Come on. Don't give me the trying to be an actor bullshit. Give him a fucking angle to sink his teeth into. Cut the supernatural/talk in riddles nonsense with House of Black. You've got three badass wrestlers with unique looks and their spooky gothy chick and they never do anything cool. Have them roll over the Elite and dominate the trios division, or have Brody and Buddy win the tag belts with Black talking for them. Instead they put the belts on those mid as fuck, London and Kendrick Smackdown tag title challenger-looking motherfuckers the Gunns. Tony has fuck you money, so throw the fucking bag at Mercedes already, give her a big-ass entourage of hangers-on/lackies and have her feud with Hayter. This is an incredible roster of talent, but I feel like its only being used to like 50-60% of its potential, and that makes me sad.

  8. Ricky Starks and Darby Allin are the two guys off the top of my head that they should be building towards for that spot, or at least thinking about. If we're talking about someone who's ready to step into the role of top babyface now, I'd say there probably isn't a real need. Hangman should really be the guy and hopefully they can get him back on track because they really messed up with him.

  9. 3 hours ago, just drew said:

He can’t. Because there aren’t any. She’s a really good wrestler but some folks act like she’s some huge draw when there’s zero empirical reason to believe she’s any more of a draw than Becky or Bianca or even Bayley or Alexa…

    There's this: https://thesportingbrews.com/2021/12/05/sasha-banks-drawing-the-best-numbers-in-wrestling-since-return/

It's over a year old now and even hard numbers can be manipulated to confirm biases but, taken at face value, it backs up what people have said about Sasha being a draw at least relative to her peers.
