  1. DDP's knockoff Nirvana theme song sounded WAY too close to the real thing. It wouldn't surprise me if whoever owns the rights to the actual song sued Turner/WCW or at least C&D'd them.
  2. i wondered that too, but every other place i read it only cited Haus of Wrestling.
  3. and the news is breaking that NWA signed with the CW: https://www.hausofwrestling.com/2023/10/18/billy-corgan-the-nwa-sign-two-tv-deals-with-the-cw-exclusive/
  4. NWA POWERRR! Episode 130: Musical Chairs 10/17/23 @ Nashville, TN "Pick Your Poison" Match: MechaWolf vs. Yabo the Clown the winner gets to choose the stipulation for the big 6-man match at the PPV. MechaWolf controls most of this match, since he's, you know, a good wrestler. the clown has his share of clown-based offense as well. both managers get involved, leading to more outside interference for the finish. It was better than i expected. Thom Latimer vs. Koa Laxamana Latimer is in great shape physically. He's got good size, decent speed and movements, and is believable as an ass-kicking competitor. This guy should be a big star, but he kinda sucks at promos. And with this current angle, they seem to be trying to transfer all of Kamille's interest on to Thom. But man, for me, it is just not working. Thom feels like an afterthought for his title match. speaking of matches, this was pretty much a squash. Thom just bullied the poor Hawaiian. But hey, they did give us a spot where Kamille speared Koa's valet, so i guess there's that. somewhat enjoyable, but predictable and unremarkable. Women's TV Title Match: Max the Impaler (c) vs. MJ Jenkins not the quasi-squash i expected. in fact, Jenkins looked really good here. She kept Max on defense for a good majority of the match. Fun match that goes 6:05 or less, and worth checking out. #1 National Title Contender's Match: Zyon vs. Chris Adonis Zyon comes out without Austin Idol again (according to Joe Galli he was banned from the building). But without Idol, Zyon has.....nothing? like, his whole gimmick is that he's Idol's latest protégé, but he hasn't done anything at all yet. "Sexy Jesus" aka Chris Adonis consistently feels underutilized in NWA, which is weird to say. Match is good enough, but immediately forgettable. It never really created the engagement that would've made it great. Plus the finish was lame and didn't help anybody. man, there was just a LOT of talking on this show. We heard from EC3, Kamille, James Mitchell/Judais/Max, Sal/Gaagz, the Southern 6, and Pretty Empowered.
  5. officially announced: TMNT x Masters of the Universe toy series https://www.ign.com/articles/tmnt-he-man-turtles-grayskull-figures-toys
  6. big loss for boxing, especially after the demise of HBO Boxing a few years ago. Interesting that Bellator is officially homeless at the end of the year too. Doubly so with PFL's ESPN contact ending at the end of the year. if the seemingly inevitable rumors are true, i wonder if having both brands could lead to a stronger TV deal? honestly, i don't think i like prospects for the landscape of MMA promotions here in the US next year (excluding the UFC obviously). PFL has never caught on to any level, and Bellator has been around a long time but that has never generated big ratings, sales, or interest with the general public. But they should have a hell of a video library (Bellator has hosted 300+ events since 2008, WSOF/PFL has around 100 since 2012), so theoretically it could be leveraged into a live program + highlights/hype combo deal. i think outside of a WWE Network/UFC Fight Pass kind of deal, streaming services really don't hold much clout for sports, so that's probably not a first line ask. i mostly feel bad for the Bellator fighters still under contract and just left out to hang in limbo. there's no events announced past Bellator 302 in mid-November. just sucks to not know what the future holds.
  7. @J.T. i'm glad you found enjoyment in the flick. i started watching it once but was drunk and passed out a few minutes in. need to circle back and give it a real go.
  8. Growing up, my only exposure to pro wrestling was the WWF. i didn't see WCW until the Nitro era, and had no experience watching AWA or anything else. So it started out as a very narrow view, and if i'm being honest with myself, i still take a very focused approach to what i want to watch. My favorite wrestler was (and is) "Macho Man" Randy Savage. the look (the tassles! the colors! the....cowboy hat?), the voice (oh my god, the greatest voice in the history of wrestling!), the intensity, the catch phrase (ooooh yeah!). Plus he put out some excellent matches. Just a complete package. Almost all of my other favorite wrestlers were also these larger than life characters with a lot of these same characteristics. Ultimate Warrior. Legion of Doom. the Undertaker. a few years later, Shawn Michaels (not so much the Rockers, but his solo run with Sherri and beyond). Pro wrestlers were/are real life superheroes. they perform feats of strength/agility/flexibility that are unreal. There are a lot of parallels between the costumes of both. Most of the story is told in broad strokes, but if you pay attention close enough and/or long enough, you'll find so much more. Motivations, specific actions, nuances, all that stuff. your typical kid viewer doesn't catch these things, but as you grow with the sport, you appreciate them more and more, and they are what keep you invested. i think that is such a big reason that i enjoy stuff like gimmick matches so much. I don't care if it's a ladder, a cage, something on a pole, or exploding barbed wire death matches. an added gimmick makes my interest level rise. i want to see these spectacular stunts. these are what separate pro wrestling from the actual combat sports like MMA, Boxing, Karate, or Jiu-Jitsu, all of which are legitimate competition and therefore have inherent real meaning or stakes. But none of them can offer that adrenaline dump that the best pro wrestling can offer. i'm constantly chasing that childlike wonder and intrigue.
  9. brainstreaming is a fantastic word and i fully expect that whatever term they come up with will be less clever and cool.
  10. brady pierce is not a good promo and i wouldn't call his movement "charismatic", so this seems like an odd choice. seconding (or whatever number we're up to now). i have a forearm tattoo that happens to go directly through the inner elbow (that hurt a lot!) and around the wrist (the underside of the wrist i was very worried about but wasn't bad. the artist didn't go very deep though, and bits of it have faded. but over the wrist bones hurt like hell!!). other tattoos (both calves, both biceps) were totally fine. i would like to see that. or even the inspiration picture. Metroid is one of my favorite NES games. i would 100% unironically love to rock an nWo hawaiian shirt. then, now, forever. whether i am hateable is debateable but i'd take the L for that shirt.
  11. wow, big news about USADA. it is sadly not surprising at all that the ufc picked Conor over their longtime PED testing group. i'm no usada stan, but wtf. USADA: we gave you one exception. ONE. and you fucked it up with Brock Lesnar at ufc200. now you want us to do it again with Conor, who has put on A LOT of muscle mass. yeah, we'll pass on that. ufc: fuck you, we'll make a shit ton of money if conor fights. so he's fighting.
  12. paragraph 1: not a fan. were the DD writers/directors/etc. the same group that was involved with the Netflix series? because if so, they should be given some extra leeway at the very least. if not, that still sucks, but i'd rather a good show than a mediocre new season. paragraph 2: ok, shouldn't that have been happening since the beginning? i may have said this in another thread, but much like @the Natural, my interest is at an all-time low. wake me up when the X-Men '97 animated series debuts. everything else could be torpedoed and i would be just fine.
  13. 100% this. simple solution: stop touring the same towns over and over again. If there's 210 TV markets in the US, why do they constantly revisit the same places within the same calendar year? I get a couple stops in the larger cities (Chicago/NY/LA), but with 52 weeks of touring, 10% of that should not be in Chicago (5 stops in 2022- not counting multiple shows the same week). I don't want to say they're killing the town, but it definitely stops being a "special attraction" if they'll be back in 3 months or less.
  14. here's NWA tweeting a press release about the whole thing. i guess the partnership will be kicking off at NWA: Samhain at the end of the month. No more details were given. i don't really get this, since i've never heard of Exodus Pro. Why sign a single-A feeder league when you yourself are a bottom rung AAA league (or maybe a high tier AA league)? Exodus Pro only debuted in August? they seem like they're actually a spin-off of the CYN "promotion"? They make it a point to announce that the Exodus Pro champ will be recognized by the NWA, but do they even have a champ yet? i see this amounting to essentially nothing. Prove me wrong, Corgan. Control Your Narrative. re: TV deal "two totally different wrestling-related products" - what does that even mean? "top 20 network" - can't wait to see which one that is. what kind of network signs a program like this. Last week's POWERRR! episode is sitting at 32k views. the week before has 39k. Nobody is beating down the door to watch this product.
  15. NWA POWERRR! Episode 129: When TV Stars Align 10/10/23 @ Nashville, TN TV Title (Tournament Finals): "Outlandish" Zicky Dice vs. "Big Strong" Mims good opening video to hype this matchup. Again i want to mention that one of the strong points of the NWA is the video packages they put together (those 10 Pounds of Gold vids to kick off the Corgan era really set the table for that) i'm surprised this is the first match aired, it really is the one that should be main eventing. Dice is one of those guys where i like about 80% of what he does, but the other 20% puts me off, so it's always a toss up on how i view his matches. Zicky controls most of the match, at least partially because he's not afraid to bend a rule or two. Mims' drive is what keeps him in the match. Decent enough match, but i feel like these guys have a better one in them, and i expect a rematch. I don't disagree with the winner, but the finish was a bit flat. EC3 promo where he addresses Thom Latimer. He talks about raising Thom up to his rightful place. He posits that Kamille may be the one holding Thom back. It's certainly not your average promo, and I enjoyed this. Spectaculars (Rolando & Rush Freeman) vs. Southern 6 (Kerry Morton & Alex Taylor) the Specs are just so vanilla. this is a short match and the heel tactics of the S6 make it watchable. In-Ring Summit between the SVGS Chris Silvio, Blake Troop, and Jax Dane Jax Dane is wearing a tie-dyed t-shirt and i didn't recognize him at first. odd choice. Silvio essentially kicks Dane out of the SVGS. He talks for seemingly an hour to challenge Dane to meet Troop in a Submission Match. well this certainly existed. Dane wasn't terrible, everybody else was though. Judais vs. Sal the Pal a complete and utter beatdown that is fine but goes on too long. And it caps off with some interference from (sigh) Gaagz the Gymp. US Tag Team Titles: Daisy Kill & Talos (c) vs. Country Gentlemen (AJ Cazana & mystery partner) Cazana's new partner is AJ's little brother, KC Cazana. Danny Dealz hates on this kid getting a title match in his debut, and i can't disagree. He doesn't even have a cagematch profile. this was a weird match. it was kind of a showcase for the champs, but also AJ took most of the beating and KC was the recipient of the hot tag, which seems backwards. But his momentum is short lived, as a chokeslam from Talos to KC leads us to the inevitable finish. Post-match, Odinson & Kratos storm out and demand a title shot, which leads us to.... US Tag Team Titles: Daisy Kill & Talos (c) vs. The Immortals fun match that sees the Immortals match their power against that of Talos. Pretty short but fast paced. I would like to see more, which is perfect since it absolutely sets up a rematch.
  16. ALL IN dvd arrived today. will likely be weeks before i watch it, so look elsewhere if you want to know the differences between this and the live broadcast. also, sorry the 2nd pic is so blurry (edit: also sorry that the pics didn't embed. dvdvr board vs. imgur vs. twiztor's phone is a triple threat where there are no winners) https://i.imgur.com/Z1R2OMu.webp https://i.imgur.com/UzkJoEU.jpeg
  17. NWA POWERRR! Episode 128: Keep Your Enemies Close 10/3/23 @ Nashville, TN #1 Women's Tag Contenders: Natalia Markova & Taylor Rising vs. M95 decent enough match, but it was structured a bit oddly. Markova completely dominated everybody, every time she was in the ring. Really made Taylor look inferior. the high points of the match were whenever Madi Wrenkowski was in the ring and on offense, as she was the best person involved. Junior Heavyweight Title: Colby Corino (c) vs. Matt Vine fun match. Vine used his size and power to slow the match down and try to break Corino physically. Colby was smaller and more wiry, so relied on quickness and high-risk maneuvers. Solid action all around and worth watching. Aron Stevens and Knox & Murdoch face off at the podium. Long story short, K&M will face BFT at the PPV in a "Medieval Knights of the Round Table Tables Match". Chris Silvio, Esq. vs. Jax Dane this was essentially just a promo from Silvio, although there was a bit of a match i guess you could call it. came off as kind of lame IMO. National Title: Silas Mason (c) vs. Dak Draper pretty decent match here. Silas has really developed into a great rough-and-tumble brawler. He's fun to watch. Draper is the epitome of "OK". he's got a pretty bland presentation. While he doesn't do anything that's bad, he also doesn't do anything that's great. just a guy who's just kind of there.
  18. three days ago: #RaysUp today: fuck baseball. NFL4EVER! #FlyEaglesFly
  19. my takeaway is that Madusa's opponents hated working with her so much that they had to resort to getting messed up ahead of time. is that what we're going for here?
  20. OK, but i'm going to need a Dan Spivey appearance too. Maybe it will help me not get confused when reading either/both of their names.
  21. glad to see the ECW Zombie getting some love. usually his appearance is derided. i thought it was hilarious and awesome.
  22. well OK, but if i get busted, now i have a scapegoat.....
  23. NWA POWERRR! Episode 127: The G Gets The Love 9/28/23 @ Nashville, TN NWA TV Title Qualifying Match: Chris Adonis vs. Mims vs. Jordan Clearwater vs. Blake Troop i liked, and was surprised by, the finish and the winner. the match itself wasn't bad, but felt too discombobulated for me. It just didn't flow. I'll look forward to the TV Title match. Murdoch cuts a fiery promo about winning the tag team titles. crowd eats it up. Knox brings the energy down with some weird talking about dreams and spirits and a Jackalope. ok. Kamille vs. Madi Wrenkowski the story going in is that Kamille may have lost her focus on wrestling since losing the title, and she's shifting more to supporting her beau. Madi takes it to her early, but Kamille's size and strength is always tough to overcome. Madi leans into some underhanded tactics to retain control until the big comeback. Pretty decent match. The finish was not really in doubt, but the journey getting there was entertaining. US Tag Team Titles: Brothers of Funstruction (with Violent J) vs. Daisy Kill & Talos (c) if you like the clowns' schtick, this was probably fun. it just feels dumb to me, i can't really get invested in what they do. Post-match, we get La Rebelion brawling with the clowns and also Vampiro and Violent J getting heated. an awkward promo from Brady Pierce, formerly of the Spectaculars. Yikes, this was awful. NWA World TItle: EC3 (c) vs. Jay Bradley mostly a power battle. i guess this was OK. i didn't dislike it, but it felt like these guys didn't get out of first gear. Tag Team Titles: Blunt Force Trauma (c) vs. Knox & Murdoch another match with big dudes, although this highlighted the brawling of both teams. we only get about 5 minutes until Aron Stevens slides a chair into the ring. Knox gets DQ'd when he DOESN'T use the chair because the ref DOESN'T see it. if i was an overly positive person, i'd say that NWA was subverting tropes and expectations with that finish. Since i'm not, i'll call it what it was: bullshit. Last week, i mentioned that it seemed like they were loading this episode up. Well, for me it certainly didn't come close to delivering. also no idea what the episode title means.
  24. i kind of wonder if we end up with 12 PPVs a year regardless: 8 AEW + 3 ROH + Forbidden Door, or something like that.
  25. also opposed to the aforementioned MNW-era Nitro shows where the "main event" would "start" at 9:57 and end in a clusterfuck before 10. somewhat related, i always thought the 20 minute promos to start off Raw were somewhat business exposing. Most weeks, the main event would get booked right there in the ring. What was the planned main event before that? why are these guys showing up if they didn't have a match? You don't see the Houston Astros showing up in Miami because they wanted a game against the Marlins.
