  1. what do you think this is, TNA? also, how does Google not have a meme of Mike Tenay with the "We Know Who That Is" caption? the internet has disappointed me today. i may have to make one when i get home from work.
  2. @just drew i am losing it at the Bautista bit. Just sitting here at work fucking dying. kudos, good sir. and might i mention, i look forward to your next movie.
  3. i think there's enough 'evidence' to prove this point. no tin foil hats needed. in the WWF, anybody associated with WCW was a heel. They were portrayed as heels on TV since the moment they debuted. Look at the two biggest stars: They completely neutered and buried DDP. Booker T was turned into Shane's bumbling lackey. They made it a point to single out that this was a "WCW match" and changed the announcers, referee, and ring announcer. Vince McMahon, ON TV, went out of his way to mention he didn't want WCW matches on his show. It didn't "look" or "feel" like a WCW presentation, so no actual hardcore WCW fans would have cared. Plus, you know, the whole thing about WWF Raw being in Atlanta one week later. there's nothing wrong with the match. see for yourself: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g32efb5gaF8. it's no all-time classic or anything, but it's a perfectly acceptable match. It goes less than 5 minutes bell-to-bell before the WWF guys run in and wreck the whole thing (to a huge pop BTW). If the implication is that the match was SO bad that they changed the entire trajectory of the angle due to a 5 minute match, it must have been the absolute drizzling shits and the worst thing of all time. i re-watched all of the Invasion stuff a few years ago and made a thread that i updated weekly to recap the shows (http://deathvalleydriver.com/forum/index.php?/topic/6883-invasion/#comment-740182). the search feature is broken right now, so i can't find it, but there was no way Vince/WWF was going to let WCW get over at any level. seriously, the ONLY person from WCW/ECW that got over to ANY level was RVD. The whole angle was garbage from the jump.
  4. checking wikipedia, that sounds like a pretty damn good movie. like WAY too ggod for a drunken satirical review. still, it sounds worth checking out.
  5. need a recommendation: my wife is out of town for the weekend, so i'm making it a point to watch good/bad foreign films. already watched Martial Club (1981, Hon Kong kung fu flick) and Godzilla vs SpaceGodzilla (1994, Japan (duh)). i want to watch at least one more, preferably from a different genre and region, but i'm really not all that picky. are there any African films that i could semi-satirically review that would be worthwhile? South American? HELP?!?
  6. i haven't watched Rampage yet, but i just finished Dynamite. let me just say, AEW RULES THE MOTHERFUCKING WORLD~! love ya, @DEAN
  7. NWA POWERRR! Episode 126: The Dark Carnival 9/19/23 @ Nashville, TN #1 Contender: Ruthie Jay vs. Natalia Markova vs. Missa Kate the two underdogs team up on Markova early until personal ambition gets in the way. timing was a bit off at times, but this wasn't bad. i agree with the outcome and think Kenzie Paige can have a pretty good match with her. Interesting finish that involves an intriguing take on a low blow. they (re?)play Tyrus' retirement speech from NWA75. i assume this aired on the PPV? i haven't rewatched it yet. i'm not going to live through that again, so i skip ahead. Zyon vs. "Double Barrel" Boz we seem to have settled on the "Zyon" spelling, after some inconsistency earlier ("Zion"). Boz gets the jobber entrance, which is the first time i recall NWA doing that. Definitely more of a competitive match than i expected. Certainly not a bad match, but also nothing special. Interview with Violent J: He likes to chew ice. this dude is super animated. How has there not been an ICP cartoon or something by now? Rush Freeman vs. Thom Latimer Freeman is kind of vanilla. this is pretty one-sided and fine. La Rebelion vs. Magic Inc. CJ is the only good part of this magic team. She is barely above a one-note character, but it is done EXCELLENTLY. La Rebelion carry this to a watchable match, but these magic guys are just kind of dumb and uninteresting. Timing was all sorts of off for the finish. they seem to have loaded up next week's show: an NWA World Title match (vs. Jay Bradley), a Tag Team Titles match (vs. Knox & Murdoch), plus Kamille (vs. Madi Wrenkowski)!
  8. won't get to watch this until later next week, but this is also going down this weekend:
  9. now i won't be able to read his posts in the MMA forum without thinking of MMA Jarrett.
  10. alternatively, i hope @Sammo~! roots against Danielson. Just to show that he has.....
  11. i had the same score as you. Grasso 2,4,5. Was rooting for Val, but that slip up in rd5 caused her to lose. I had her up in the round until that point. i may have told this story before, but once i moved back to my home(ish)town, my friends and i decided to get together, watch the monthly PPV cards, and create a yearlong betting pool. we had all watched for at least a few years by that point, so it's not like any of us were novices. The first event? UFC 127 (Feb 2011). the main event was a nontitle clash between BJ Penn vs. Jon Fitch, which ended in a majority draw. not the greatest start to a betting pool. sidenote: i picked Penn, proving that i have always tended to favor aging former greats. i didn't win the year.
  12. well it would certainly turn out better than when WCW would trot out Lee Marshall for the women's matches. i always kind of appreciated that idea in WCW (obviously moreso with Tenay and the cruisers) because it did give you JUST a slight more reason to pay attention.
  13. i'm sure it's mainly my unfamiliarity with current Impact Wrestling, but i did not enjoy this episode as much as i expected. good moment for Sabin, at least. and congrats to Traci Brooks.
  14. Pat was scheduled to make his return to MMA next month (vs. Mike Jackson. Yes, the Mike Jackson who holds a victory no contest over CM Punk). Wonder if that still happens.
  15. i don't get high very often, but i've taken to eating a THC gummy before i watch AEW PPVs. I find that i get SUPER into the matches, for better or worse. the bad matches just seem to drag on forever, but the good matches are vastly improved. i am drawing connections that may or may not be intended by the wrestlers. i associate the various holds/moves with promo snippets and moments from other matches. i'm seeing more story elements that i would normally overlook. I buy into more nearfalls. technical matches are better. brawls are wilder. "epic" matches feel bigger. the biggest drawback is that i don't really recall much from the matches the next day (or by the end of the show for the earlier stuff), so i'll remember that i really liked it, but that's about it. well, that and sometimes the potency spikes so i just zone out and miss whole segments/matches. but it's a tradeoff i'm happy with. this may now be my favorite thread in the history of DVDVR. i've gotten to talk about my record collection, my gummy-induced watching habits, my grammar nazi tendencies, and tape trading. Plus read about other people's history with the hardcore punk (and other) scenes back in the day. Just to complete my BINGO card, i also am a big Nintendo fanboy and Mountain Dew enthusiast. this. is. awesome. clap clap clapclapclap
  16. you're not the only one. (reader's choice on if i meant this in response to @Dog or @Pete )
  17. i believe that was iTunes- i remember hearing them talk about how a truly random shuffle could lead to the same song being played back-to-back, and they wanted to avoid that. Whether it was precautionary or because people complained, i do not remember. sorry to both of you. i know it's wrong and try not to do it, but i am absolutely guilty of saying that. It is just SO COMMON that sometimes it sneaks through. But i also think it's something that's only going to get worse, like me yelling into the void about people using "should of" or "would of" instead of "should/would have". Or how they have LITERALLY changed the definition of "literally". Or even people abbreviating "et cetera" as "ect".
  18. NWA POWERRR! Episode 125: New Era, Old Problems... 9/12/23 @ Nashville, TN Intro goes hard on the Kenzie Paige hype, and i back that play 100%. i feel like the intros the last couple weeks have been trying to bring back the "10 Pounds of Gold" YouTube videos that kicked off the Corgan Era. Solid move. NWA TV Title Qualifying Match: Dak Draper vs. Gaagz the Gymp vs. Zicky Dice vs. Judais i don't dislike the No Mercy entrances, but the sudden music change with each person was a bit much- or maybe it was just the tonal shift to go from Draper -> Gaagz -> Judais. the match revolves around a size battle between Judais and Draper, which i feel undermines Judais, but whatever. i don't know. i guess this was OK, but anything involving Gaagz is not for me, at all. AJ Cazana vs. Jax Dane BMMSM! the announcers are focusing on if the Country Gentlemen will form back together again, but they didn't break up? at least not on camera. or maybe the other guy left NWA? match was pretty much just a brawl, but no complaints from me. Homicide & Joe Alonzo vs. Colby Corino & Koa Laxamana Ricky Morton is the special referee for this match. No explanation as to why Homicide is teaming with Alonzo, after their NWA75 match a couple weeks back. They are hyping up that Jamie Stanley manages both Alonzo and Covington, as if that's any sort of compelling angle. Stanley came out with Alonzo, FWIW. This didn't work for me at all really. too much going on. Homicide and Alonzo were antagonistic towards each other. the stuff with Stanley. the referee. i like Koa, but he didn't carry his end here. plus the referee bit. Just kind of a mess. Actually a pretty cool moment as i type that. On the floor, Homicide slid a set up steel chair into Koa. i haven't seen that before. EC3 requests the presence of Thom Latimer. (someone in the crowd: "oh no he didn't!" best moment of the show so far). Latimer comes out. EC3 prattles on somewhat, Kamille interjects herself and has something to say. She runs down EC3 ("you were sitting poolside with the boss politicking, but you've been doing that since the Dixie days") and Tyrus ("Gaagz the Gymp could have beaten Tyrus!"). Latimer accepts EC3's challenge for Samhain. interview with Chris Adonis. He will win the TV Title because it is his stepping stone to the NWA World Title. pretty decent quick promo. "Who is Zicky Dice?" NWA Women's Title Match: Kenzie Paige (c) vs. Samantha Starr announced as a non-title match, but off camera it get switched to a title defense. solid match with Kenzie fighting from underneath for the majority. She is excellent at playing that role. Shorter match than i would have liked, but definitely enjoyed what was here.
  19. Steamboat Willie is a particularly interesting example. Original prints of the short either had incorrect copyright information or none on them (can't remember off the top of my head all of the finer details). a few law schools have surmised that the short should legally ALREADY be part of the PD. Of course, nobody is stupid enough to challenge Disney to a court battle, especially since we're so close to that result happening anyway.
  20. i have just shy of 500 vinyl records. i was bought a super cheap console record player maybe 18-19 years ago and grabbed a few cheap vinyls from a garage sale. In the next few years, my collection really started from a base of my mom's, her sister's, and her brother's records. Then my (at the time) boss gave me all of his. That was probably ~200 between all of them. Almost entirely 70s and 80s rock. So i've continued that trend, piecing together a really fantastic collection that centers on classic rock. Although my wife will occasionally pick up a new one, we both prefer used. https://www.discogs.com/user/twiztor/collection?sort=artist&sort_order=asc feel free to critique. i read recently that 51% of vinyl buyers don't listen to them. WHAT IS WRONG WITH THEM?!? there's no better feeling than chilling in my basement, beer in hand, and spinning an old record. just a whole different set of vibes. and streaming? hell nah. my mp3 player is loaded with like 50,000 songs. why would i ever pay somebody else to play music for me, when i can select exactly what i want to hear? i've spent decades curating this digital collection, procuring music, and creating bomb ass playlists. ain't no way a Spotify or YouTube algorithm can top that.
  21. had the same feeling watching ECW. those WWE Network episodes just feel wrong. the tape needs to be just as gritty as the angles and action. hiding in plain sight. honestly, it might be genius. who is going to accuse a professional impersonator of being the real deal?
  22. the GL ring can change colors? doesn't that kind of negate the Rainbow Corps deal they have (had?) going on? also fair to note that there was not a Red Lantern in the actual Golden Age comics. This is a new character created for this "New Golden Age" history. i haven't read it, but it seems like a decent enough set up i guess.
  23. damn Smelly, you take a couple weeks off and then just start cranking these babies out. I remember watching Spring Stampede '98 at my neighbor's house. i don't even know why or how, as he wasn't a close friend and didn't follow wrestling, but we convinced him to order the PPV. i was hyped for Savage in a title match. i only remember the main and the US title match. The most important thing on TV that night, however, was South Park. It was the episode where they were going to reveal who Cartman's father was. (spoiler: it was his mother). i remember that leading to a lot of confusion in the house, which culminated in a big fight. Needless to say, we never watched wrestling there again. (let me take this moment to point out that i looked up said South Park episode, and it is said to have first aired April 22, 1998..... three days after the PPV. So i don't know how my timeline works out, but that is definitely how i remember it. Maybe a replay? Or maybe i'm just losing my mind). i remember the 4/20 (heh) Nitro for Savage losing the belt. I was sure he was done due to the knee injury, but somehow he holds on another 2 months (!) until the Great American Bash. GAB ended up being the last WCW PPV any of my friends bought, as we all fully switched to WWF. It's just a coincidence really- my small town cable finally got USA Network at this time, and we all unanimously wanted to watch Steve Austin and/or DX. I taped Nitro for a few weeks/months after that and would watch it after getting home from Raw, but my interest waned pretty quickly. i remember the Disciple because at one point he hit his Stunner ("the Apocalypse") but had just a completely dead face. I attributed that to him being a stone cold killer (no pun intended...honest!), but after seeing him do it dozens of other times and not having that same expression, i realize it must have just been boredom or disinterest. Still, there was a second there that i thought he was interesting. Better than i ever gave him credit for as Booty Man, or Zodiac, or any of his other WCW personas. never been a Goldberg fan. Had high hopes that Raven would finally see a push and some success after winning the US title. guess not. relegated back to his Flock midcard role. Interesting that both the Flock and the nWo are going through breakup angles at the same time. Well, interesting is probably the wrong word. Curious, i guess? Poor booking? probably.
