During the build to the OC Forbidden Door bout it seemed very clear Ospreay needed to get to the US to showcase his mic game alongside his stellar in-ring. If the archive is alive it will not lie that at least one bingo card showed this. I would assume there were more.

Yeah.  I thought he crushed it and outshined Jericho in that promo before Wembley, and I liked his usual New Japan post-match promo stuff.  He's been a good promo for quite a while now IMO, since before the pandemic.  He's got infectious energy and everything about him is believable.

Plus the accent/slang will always get over in America as long as the person delivering it is halfway charismatic

    "American women all love accents."

"We do!  Cause we don't got none!"

This reminds me of that series of Achewood strips where Ray is prank calling various other comic strip characters and Beef is cheering him on.  Someone's going to be laughing in my ear and asking me to do Mike Bailey next.

I've been using variations of that for the last 20 years

  3. I thought because it was STING'S RETIREMENT that triggered the belts being vacated that they'd really want to go out of their way to have a big, special, memorable tournament.  That and they never vacate belts.

I would have liked 16 or 32 teams and you can play up the March Madness aspect.  Feels like such a no-brainer and TNT/TBS carries the actual NCAAs.  On the other hand I get maybe not wanting to devote so much TV time to tag team matches when they're debuting all this new talent and already struggle to get everybody on tv.  The first rd. would be full of teams that are never on TV.  You could split the difference, put some first rd. matches on Youtube to drive some traffic there.  Do it Crockett Cup style, give a few teams byes, make it a bigger deal.  Just feels like a missed opportunity to do something special.

AEW really hasn't had the best track record when it comes to traditional tournaments

It’s because they can’t call her The Boss.  And it took me until this morning to make that connection 🤣

tbh man we're all living in Achewood what difference does it make

Checked out some highlights and it was a hot show! Mone and Okada will breathe new life into those divisions and Ospreay is earning every penny so far even though he’s already fallen into the FTR trap of giving fired up promos about how well he’s going to perform which seems counterintuitive to me

He's finding his groove on the promos.  I like when he talks about how fucking dangerous he is personally.  Pro-Wres needs more emphaishs on DANJA

Seriously though, his nickname is the Ariel Assassin and he hits really fucking hard.  He beat Big Soup Boy or whatever people call him round here.  HE BEATS PEOPLE UP 4 A LIVIN INNIT

  6. Hahaha, just realized I blanked on the Okada 6 man tag.  I love the pairing with the Bucks, and I also think Okada working American TV style is an ongoing work in progress and it's fun watching him master it in real time.  That dropkick highspot that I'm used to 40 minutes into a match 4 minutes in instead is going to take some getting used to, and I think Okada did more in and out and down to the floor and back in a short time than he has in forever.....that can't be great on the ol back and knees......

Swerve beat up some security, too.

Nah, it was the security Swerve beat up.  After Joe bails and walks back up the ramp, he notices a dead security guard and casually kicks him off the ramp to his doom.  It was hilarious.

the other thing I noticed later was completely different, but it was such a nice subtle thing I thought "this has to be a hint" but I'd have to watch the show again to remember and fuck that.  It will forever be a mystery

  8. Oh yeah and I loved Joe kicking the security guard off the ramp on his way back up.  That was such a great little touch and the dude sold it so well it had to be a planned spot

There was another one like that later in the show that was so good I was like, "that has to be leading to something" but I can't remember what it was now....

  9. a few things in response before I get into the show

    - they're absolutely splitting the Continental belt off.  Sorry TC fans.  Notice Eddie hasn't been carrying all 3 belts much either.

    - I fucking hate the pre-programmed "CHANT ALONG FANS" built into the theme, thank you username!  I'm already sick of Ospreay trying to lead fans into it, and now CEO????  Is this what hiring former WWE production adds?  Treating the audience like sheep?

Also, for that matter we have the EVPs and now the CEO?  One thing I can't stand is gimmick redundancy in the same promotion......and what does CEO stand for in this context anyway?  I was hoping Mercedes would explain that.  Maybe next week....

I thought the show had great energy until the Jericho match.  I remember the last time I posted about him I was looking forward to him doing a hardcore Onita style run.....instead he's Lionheart again?  It was cool the first time he brought back Lionheart.  I still think he's got another run in him but man, nothing he's been trying has worked a while now, time to step back.....

Anyway, loved Joe and Wardlow.  There was some great stuff during the first break.  They've done an amazing job rebuilding Wardawg in short order.  Cole's fairytale at the beginning was a nice touch.  knowing how TK loves the double debut/surprise/return I was half expecting MJF tonight...

I like Ospreay as a promo and thought he was good tonight.  His shift from straight into the camera to his left with his eyes was throwing me off though, he'll get used to being on live television.  Like he said a couple times when he came to the ring, "this is new for me!"  The crowds aren't quite as hot for him yet as I hoped they'd be.....but then I have to keep in mind how he's sorta brand new to a lot of the audience.  And then I saw Jay White out there being really over after a slow start early in his AEW run...so yea....not worried about Will

Jay and Darby F'n ruled.  Loved Darby's selling, Randy Savage style.  Taz comparing him to Spike for pain tolerance was spot on, a comparison I'd never thought of oddly, probably because Darby is so much more athletic and high impact and not just a ragdoll like Spike was.  So glad BBSG is over and done with, it was a means to an end to unify those belts and I'm guessing Juicy is about to be back

I liked the Deonna heelish promo more than anything she's done thus far.  Felt way more natural.  Good call on putting Mone with Willow, Julia, Skye, Riho to start.....good matches minimal BS hopefully....

Great show overall.  So stacked and there's so much new talent I almost forgot KYLE MF'N O'REILLY IS BACK!!!!!!!!!

Mercedes will not be as big a deal as she could be as long as AEW sticks to its "one women's match per show" mandate. i hope this is the incentive they need to get rid of the rigidity and be able to mix things up.

I'm fine with one women's match per show but I'll never understand why they don't do more multi-women tags. 6, 8, 10 whatever.  You get more people on tv and if you lay out a well booked match that's fast paced where everyone gets to shine it's going to do so much more for the division than long, heatless singles matches with a commercial break.  Also might hide how green some of them are.  And you can get more stories and rivalries going that way

I don't really pay close attention to the ratings/segment breakdowns but my guess a lot of those singles matches die, especially when it's a match with someone relatively unknown or who only shows up on tv once a month.  Some of the women show potential but I'm not invested in the division at all at this point, and since I'm usually watching the shows on delay or the next day I've gotten in the habit of skipping most of the women's matches.  And that's crazy to me because I like women's wresting and they have so much talent!!  Doesn't help that the champions are someone I have a hard time taking seriously in Julia Hart and then Toni Storm who used to be my favorite and now I can't even watch her matches.  Like, the division is a bigger joke to me now than even the WWE Divas at times back in the day.  I'd think I'd rather watch a LayCool or Bellas tag than some of AEW's shit

Hoping Mone coming in is the impetus for a complete tonal shift and they get back to treating it seriously

  11. I was a Rock fan 97-03 but never followed him to Hollywood and his other ventures.  Not a fan of the big, dumb action movies (never seen a F&F) or kid oriented comedies.  The type of "bad" movies I like aren't the type he does, and he doesn't seem interested in doing things like Blade Runner 2049 or The Man With the Iron Fists, both of which I would have seen even if Dave Bautista wasn't in them

For Dwayne I think I've only seen Faster, Southland Tales (because I felt I had to) and Get Smart.  I liked Faster, thought he was solid in it.  I like the old Get Smart TV show and that movie had a good cast, enjoyed it for what it was.  I suppose I should check out Be Cool someday but whenever I'm contemplating it on a streaming service I end up watching something else

  12. On the latest WOR with Dave & Garrett they were talking about a Russo booked SummerSlam where the main event was up in the air and constantly changing.  As they were talking I thought 99 which was the triple threat with Austin/HHH/Foley and there were rumors at the time that it was supposed to be Austin and HHH 1v1 but they put Foley in so Jesse Ventura could raise a babyface's hand (and to be the transition champ to HHH because Austin was being bitchy about losing to him)....but Dave ruled that out, says it wasn't 1999.

They (mostly Dave) settled on 1998, which can't possibly be true.  In my memory that Highway to Hell went for a long time and there was never any doubt that Austin and Taker was the main event.

Sooooo....if the story is actually true....it has to be 1997, right?  Wasn't Bret vs. Shawn on the books for that show at one point just like KOTR?  Stuff was changing constantly that year

I'd think going to Amazon Prime would be better for visibility/synergy. Imagine if they guaranteed a Raw banner ad on the front page of Amazon dot com every week.

That was my thought too.  Would love to know the difference in bidding.....Amazon doesn't need them....Netflix clearly thought they did

  14. Personally I feel like SD! being on FOX was a huge part of WWE's recent boom period.  Money aside, they've taken a massive step back in exposure with this recent round of negotiations.  Gonna take a while for everything to shake out but I could see this hurting house shows, merch and other core business metrics, but it'll be masked by the massive rights fees.  But overall this feels like a massive step backwards to me

Netflix is extremely guarded with their numbers and IIRC SAG-AFTRA didn't get the concessions they were after in that regard.  Doubt we ever get accurate numbers for RAW

We're also at a time where there's so much wrestling content out there, so much free media in general, people are already cutting back and consolidating their streaming budgets.......I don't really see a huge upside for Netflix either

Ugh. Now THAT is a horrifying vision of the future that I hadn't had yet. Bots writing and running websites, controlled by corporations to push their product. As Keith Morris once said "Where's the gun, here's my head"...

It's already started.  Sports Illustrated, Business Insider, Men's Health and others have been busted with AI generated articles riddled with errors, written by AI generated "authors" with fake bylines and pictures from one of those huge libraries.  A lot of it was pushing bullshit products with referral links under the guise of an actual product review

The future is here and it stinks!

This makes me pretty sad.  Pitchfork had a utility for me in the 00's for discovering new music.  I'm not the type of person who was into Surfan Stevens, Joanna Newsome or other stuff like that they heavily pimped, but I remember discovering Burial's Untrue, Flying Lotus, Animal Collective and some under the radar rock music (Crocodiles, Dum Dum Girls and stuff like that) there.

Haven't gone there regularly in a long, long time but this is definitely bad for musicians and for music journalism.  Another brick in the wall.

That's actually not too far off. A couple of weeks ago I went over to their place for the Michigan/Washington football game. The kid came up and said hello and I gave him a high five and said "How's it going, Hook?" and her eyes rolled so hard that it sounded like she was bowling.

Do you ever wonder if you're the asshole?  Like, not everyone knows the joke....
