He turned 29 today. I don't understand giving him 10 years.

It appears to be - and this is just what I have read so take it with a grain of salt - it was solely done to fuck around with the luxury tax

Because length knocks down the AAV and that is a key component to the competitive balance tax

The Dodgers have committed to Smith for a longer term than any of those deals and later into his career. But in doing so, it seems they were able to compromise in terms of the average annual value and competitive balance tax hit, which is based on AAV. Smith’s AAV will be just $14MM before accounting for deferrals, which lower the present-day value of the deal to $12.2MM. Mauer got a guarantee of $184MM and a $23MM AAV back in 2010. Posey got $166.5MM and a $20.8MM AAV in 2023. Martin’s five-year deal came with an $82MM guarantee and $16.4MM AAV back in 2014.

That is not to suggest that Smith is as good as those players, merely to point out that the guarantee isn’t as unprecedented as the length. While the ten-year span is a new record for catchers, there are 13 deals with higher AAVs listed on the Contract Tracker.

So as you can see - they actually lowered Smith's current hit on the CBT for this year and next

Minnesota Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor is no longer selling his controlling stake in the franchise to minority owners Marc Lore and Alex Rodriguez, he announced Thursday.

Taylor alleges Lore and Rodriguez failed to meet certain contractual deadlines and obligations of the sale process, which began in 2021. Sources told ESPN that the relationship between Taylor and his successors -- Lore and Rodriguez -- disintegrated over the past two years.

Minnesota (50-22) is having its best season in years, and is just a half game out of first place in the Western Conference.

In a statement given to ESPN, Lore and Rodriguez maintained they have met their financial obligations to Taylor, including a final payment last week. In 2021, Taylor agreed to sell the Timberwolves and WNBA's Minnesota Lynx for $1.5 billion, with a structure that called for a transfer of power over a number of years as Lore and Rodriguez made a series of payments.

"We are disappointed with Glen Taylor's public statement today," Lore and Rodriguez said in the statement. "We have fulfilled our obligations, have all necessary funding and are fully committed to closing our purchase of the team as soon as the NBA completes its approval process.

"Glen Taylor's statement is an unfortunate case of seller's remorse that is shortsighted and disruptive to the team and the fans during a historic winning season."

Since the sale process began in 2021, NBA franchise values have skyrocketed, with the Phoenix Suns selling for $4 billion, the Dallas Mavericks for $3.5 billion and Charlotte Hornets for $3 billion.

In his statement, Taylor maintained he was no longer selling the franchise, but that he "will continue to work with Marc, Alex and the rest of the ownership group to ensure our teams have the necessary resources to compete at the highest levels on and off the court."

  3. Seattle won the CBI (over High Point)

Norfolk State won the CIT (over Purdue - Fort Wayne)

EDIT - I should note that I didn't even realize the CIT was back. Only 9 teams accepted playing with Norfolk State being granted a bye to the semis and they hosted both games they played so... yeah

  4. Dodgers extend catcher Will Smith for 10 years (yes a catcher for 10 years)

$140 million with no opt outs

Because of course as LA is now want to do - there is deferred money. $5 million every year is deferred and will be paid out from 2034 to 2043

The 10 years for a catcher is the longest ever (longest was 8 years as far as anyone can tell)

Buys out the last two arb years but have fun figuring out where to play him in 3 or 4 years

  5. Other rule changes not mentioned already

    • Trade deadline has been moved back a week. Will now take place after Week 9.
    • Replay can now be used to overturn a ruling that a quarterback was down or out of bounds before throwing a pass.
    • Replay can now be used to determine whether the game clock expired before the ball was snapped.
    • And the "fun" replay one - The replay assistant will now be allowed to correct "objectively" incorrect calls for intentional grounding and roughing the passer.
    • Teams now have an unlimited number of designated for return transactions in the postseason. (Bold is for emphasis)
    • Emergency third quarterbacks, who are available to play in case the starter and the backup are ejected or injured, can now be elevated from both the 53-man roster and the practice squad. (Last season, they had to be on the the 53-man roster)
    • Haha 1
  6. Regarding the Christmas Games

Since Christmas is Wednesday - Goodell said that teams playing in the Christmas games will all play the Saturday before thus, in the NFL's mind, is the same preparation as playing Sunday then Thursday

The other schedule thing announced is that the Eagles game in Brazil will be on the Friday of Week 1 and will air exclusively on Peacock so plenty of time to recycle all the bitching from this previous year's playoff game

  7. It is already noted in the Borderlands thread but Embracer sold off another big piece

Gearbox has been acquired by Take-Two Interactive for $460 million which oh btw is in Take-Two shares not cash

Not all the Gearbox assets are being sold

    Quote

In a press release, Embracer shared that it is divesting Gearbox Software, Gearbox Montreal, Gearbox Studio Quebec, and the franchises Borderlands, Tiny Tina's Wonderlands, Homeworld, Risk of Rain, Brothers in Arms, and Duke Nukem. Embracer will retain rights to Gearbox Publishing San Francisco (formerly Perfect World Entertainment, and which it plans to rename), the publishing rights to Remnant, Hyper Light Breaker, and other unannounced games, Cryptic Studios, Lost Boys Interactive, and Captured Dimensions. All of its retained assets will be integrated into other parts of Embracer Group. The sale is expected to close by the end of June.

  8. Jordan Montgomery to the D-backs on a one year deal with a vesting option for a second year

The option is $20 million if he makes 10 starts. $25 million if he makes 23 starts

I saw one person describe Scott Boras offseason as basically the equivalent of striking out 4 times in a game (aka the Golden Sombrero)
