So is Taichi gonna face a replacement or will the NEVER Title be scrapped from the card entirely?

They teased a Goto rematch, but Taichi said no to it and then cut off Goto's mic before he could respond.

Today's matches were very good- especially the last 2.  Ishimori was extremely good, and last one was LIJ vs Suzuki so I don't have to say how good it was.

  2. Yano's over, and he's a great guy to have- as you can have him beat almost anyone without hurting them, and he can lose to anyone without ruining his crediblity.

That's one really good thing NJPW does in general- their midcarders are credible enough to steal wins yet aren't hurt by losses to lowcarders.  (See Ishii, EVIL, SANADA and Goto as well, though I wouldn't be surprised if Goto starts getting phased down the card into dad status  soon)

  3. Who's going to be big Japanese star to step up- the only person who I can see doing it is Hiromu if he steps up to heavyweight and recovers fully (and he prob should step up to save him from himself at this point)

They still got a few more years in Naito , though I think he's break glass in case in emergency at this point.

I can see Ibushi having a small run, but I don't think it's going to happen.  He's going to be one of the biggest what if stories of all time.

What do you think happened with SHO/YOH?

Also the thing is that GOD is definitely going to the Dome with the belts and the Bucks aren’t in WTL so I could see Suzuki/Sabre winning it but what the hell do the Bucks do? They aren’t gonna be in WTL but I don’t see any chance they miss the tag title match.

Like it or not, the Young Bucks have been NJPW’s most heavily pushed tag team over the last 5 years. They have been booked like monsters over the last year specifically. With their investment in them and especially with contract negotiations coming, NJPW isn’t gonna risk anything and throw them into the “get everyone on the card” NEVER six-man clusterfuck match. I assume the Bucks are in the tag title match in some way. So I think the HW tag match is gonna be a 3 way between GOD, WTL winners (probably Suzuki/ZSJ), and the Young Bucks.

Bucks and Marty versus whoever holds the 6-man belts?  (Guessing BCOG loses them at some point to somebody random)

Anybody surprised by how utterly lukewarm they were for KUSHIDA? I know he’s not nearly as over as an Ace should be but I always thought he was at least pretty over and decently popular. The Sumo Hall crowd seemed very pro-Marty and you could hear a pin drop when KUSHIDA won. There wasn’t even an initial pop. This is supposed to be the ace of the Junior Division? It was a really good match and I was rooting hard for KUSHIDA but even I couldn’t help but be disappointed at the utter lack of reaction to his victory. It was one of the more anticlimactic title changes that I’ve seen in a long time. The crowd just didn’t care.

The Japanese crowd really loves to chant for Marty.   I don't know if he's over, or just the chant.

KUSHIDA seems like junior Okada where he's respected but not loved.

Hiromu is loved, and I think when he comes back it will be the moment of 2019 for NJPW.  The question is when do they bring Hiromu up to HW?  My guess is it will be part of an LIJ split.

I think one element of this is that none of us have seen much, if any, of him befoer the crash. I've watched a hell of a lot of Gary Hart over the last few years and he was really a non-entity at ringside. There was very little he could do physically relative to his peers. For instance, in the Houston footage, with dozens and dozens of Gary Hart at-ringside matches, and a handful of JJ Dillon ones, JJ stood out so much more.

That said, he did have a major connection with the crowd and that allowed him to play a role in key angles like Lewin's face turn, but moments like that were few and far between. I just don't know how well so much of his "work" holds up though.

Gary's booking also is a factor.  He's one of the best bookers ever.  I also think Gary had a good bit to do with Muta in a way never seen before, even if it's been argued Gary sabotaged Muta by convicing him he couldn't turn face.

That main event has got me interested in this much more. I'm interested in Cody/Juice but I'm really glad that is not closing the show. Think it's going to be an entertaining show at least. Always like to see ACH working NJPW shows hope he gets on more regularly the juniors need more talent cycling through. Similarly nice to so SCU on it also, would like to see them in the Tag League this year.

I had a hard time buying ACH as a junior during BOSJ this year- he looked so much bigger than all the other juniors, and might even be bigger than some of the heavies.

That match won me over on Taichi 100%. I always laughed during his intro and the tear away pants is a great heel gimmick but it has been all love since then.

His Naito match earlier this year was so much better.   His NJC match with I think Tana was very good as well.

If you want heel shtick done to perfection- on NJPW check out his match against Taka.  They manage to go about 10 minutes without hurting each other.  Larry Zybisco would be proud.

Also, if Tana comes into WK with the briefcase, I fully expect him to win as his last hurrah.

They've been doing this for a while but obviously far more subtly than they are now. I mean, Tanahashi's criticisms were a little bit justifiable a few years ago but 2018 Omega has come on leaps and bounds in terms of building to the finishing stretch by integrating character work into his stories. I think the generational resentment is interesting. It's not ideal but I am more on board than you guys it seems.

Tana and Kenny are only 5-6 years apart in age.   Would be more interesting if they were having a tug of war over someone younger like Hangman Page.

  10. my guess is a junior beats Taichi for the NEVER belt- maybe KUSHIDA?

Maybe Taichi knocks off a couple of juniors first.

Maybe NJPW is going to try and elevate juniors by having Ospreay beat Ibushi and another junior beat Taichi?

I finally beat that cage dive mission, my new bete noir is the three-way match (I hate non-elimination 3-ways in basically every game since the dawn of time).

My laziness is hurting my fun with this game; playing matches is every bit as much fun as it was 20 years ago when I first downloaded X Premium but I find myself totally unwilling to do the digging thru FPA and other message boards to find good edits the way I did for Returns.  Hopefully the NJPW expansion will kick me in the ass to put more effort into it.

PC version doesn't have NJPW stuff yet . but finding guys is a lot easier on PC

This demographic is exactly the customer-base that you want, they have jobs (usually good ones), and don't mind spending money on their hobbies. Right now, it's cool to be a fan of NJPW, but NJPW has to be cautious about one thing, this is also the most fickle bunch of people that you can imagine. If you suddenly start to bore them or something else bright and shiny comes along, they leave in droves and don't come back. These are the same people that had Nitro parties back in the day, but once WCW was no longer a thing they didn't switch to WWE or come back in few years to watch TNA, they just left and having come to wrestling fandom late in life, there was no long-term underlying emotional investment to  cause them to come back and check things out.

I'm wondering , at least among the 35+ set, if the folks watching now were the folks who had those parties back in the day, who turned out/turned away from modern WWE at some point, and NJPW in some days recaptures what they liked about WCW when it was hot in the 90s.

The attachment was always there, but it wasn't to WWE.

  13. Why are folks not talking about the G1 Zack vs Ibushi match- that was one of my favorite matches of the year, and I'd have it in my top 5- just for how smart it was.

If it counts: Lovers vs Naito/Hiromu match at CEO would be in my top 10.

Boy, seeing them do a lucha Star (Estrella) hold in New Japan is weird. During the entire '80s lucha set that was only on THERE maybe twice even, three times at most

It's an old Southern spot Chase Owens has brought into New Japan for the tag matches- remember seeing the rowboat done plenty of times in Crockett.
