  1. Allen Garfield (Chief Lutz) has died of complications of COVID-19.
  2. Surprised no one else mentioned this one, as it came out the same year as The Hunt for Red October. It's 1989: Renegade Panamanian soldiers, loyal to Manuel Noriega, hijack a Soviet nuclear submarine and threaten to nuke Houston unless the U.S.A. abandons all plans to invade Panama. The only American submarine capable of stopping them is captained by Michael Moriarty! I only remember this film because HBO would occasionally show it as "filler" at 5AM. It was really low budget (apparently Soviet submarines had cinder block walls). It actually did get a theatrical release, on the dying grind house circuit.
  3. Does anyone remember the title of a hardcover coffee table book of George Napolitano photos that came out circa 1987-88? I remember it had photos of Dusty Rhodes posing in front of a gold curtain while wearing the big gold belt, Rick Rude sitting across the laps of a group of ring rats, Lex Luger with a beard, but the real highlight was a photo of the battle royal from WrestleMania 2 where William "The Refrigerator" Perry was diving off the top turnbuckle to deliver a double axhandle. Napolitano was standing directly behind the ringpost, so you saw this cool shot of all the wrestlers and football players looking in awe as Perry dove off.
  4. I've been watching a shit ton of BUZZR since I was ordered to shelter in place. So many fond memories of growing up in the 80's, watching Classic Concentration on the local NBC affiliate in the morning, and then re-runs of Joker's Wild, Card Sharks, Super Password, Press Your Luck, etc. on USA Network, and then the ABC affiliate showed the Shadow Stevens revival of Hollywood Squares and Scrabble in the 4PM block. It's kind of hypocritical of me. I have nothing but contempt for modern reality shows like Survivor, The Bachelor, American Idol, etc. I just roll my eyes when they have the contestants on American Idol give those "testimonials" where they talk about how much it's their dream to win Idol, or when they act all excited when a has-been music star shows up to coach them. There's just something about those classic game shows that don't seem as "forced" as modern reality programs, or even the modern revivals of game shows.
  5. Tom Waits covering "Sea of Love." I first heard this in the Al Pacino movie "Sea of Love."
  6. The plea by that one White House doctor to not even leave the house to buy groceries for the next two weeks has gone over like a fart in church with most of the people I talked to at Walmart and Target the last two days. Washington state cancelled school for the rest of the year, with the state superintendant cautioning they may have to cancel classes in September as well, which, from what I've read on message boards over the last two hours, has essentially guaranteed he shouldn't even bother running for re-election. (When he announced the initial closures last month, when asked by a reporter how substitute teachers, custodians, para educators, cafeteria workers, and other hourly school employees were supposed to pay their bills, his response was essentially "Wow, that's a tough one. I guess some of them could deliver food to handicapped kids or something.") This whole "distance learning" thing has been a complete shit show so far, lots of teachers either providing half-assed lessons, or they're not technologically profecient to begin with so they're struggling to do stuff on Zoom. I just remember this one woman in line in front of me at Safeway two weeks ago: she had three kids with her, all horsing around and out of control, and she just looked SO exhausted and like she wanted to burst into tears. More and more Washingtonians are starting to ignore the "shelter in place" rules and going out and about. I've seen a couple hair and nail salons have re-opened "under the table," and even the sole porn shop near me re-opened this weekend, arguing that they are an essential business for some reason or another. It's nowhere near as bad here as in Italy where they're on the verge of rioting in the streets over everything being shut down, but attempts by Gov. Jay Inslee to keep things under control are starting to fall on deaf ears. As we get closer to May 1st and rent being due, more and more people will start pushing for Inslee to start re-opening some businesses and letting people get back to work as many face down bankruptcy and homelessness. I guess in that aspect, we're lucky that we were hit first. After the surge this week, as the curve flattens (and Jesus Fucking Christ am I sick and tired of hearing that phrase), we'll probably be the first state to start easing up. There certainly is very little tolerance for any sort of continued "shelter in place" order that extends beyond May 5th among the common folk, and this state certainly doesn't have the National Guard capability to enforce martial law, not that our wet noodle of a governor would even have the guts to do that. Arenas and sporting events will probably be cancelled through August, but hopefully we can get most restaurants, theaters, bars, offices reopened by early June with major restrictions on how many people per room.
  7. Putting Charlotte in NXT is definitely NOT going to make me start watching NXT. I'm just so burned out on her, Sasha and Bayley; I wish they'd be rotated out of the main event scene for a year or three to allow Io, Kairi, Lacey, Nikki, Alexa, etc. take over as the main women's stars. ------------------------ One reason I'm not that fond of the current wrestling scene is because I'm so heavily influenced by late 90's All Japan. I hate finisher spamming and I kept waiting for Braun and Drew to bust out some sort of brand new, "Burning Hammer" style move that they've never used before, to finish off Goldberg/Brock and win the title. I mean, not an actual Burning Hammer or a move where a guy gets dropped on his head, but some sort of move that a guy only uses once or twice a year to win a big match. Instead of hitting five Rainmakers to get the pin, how about drag your opponent onto the top turnbuckle and hit a Rainmaker that slams both of you to the canvas?
  8. I really don't "get" Warner Bros. obsession with having Ezra Miller as The Flash. I mean, he's fine in the Fantastic Beasts films for the role he's playing (brooding loner who glares a lot), and I liked him in Justice League, but they've been wanting him as Barry Allen before any of that, back when his most commercially successful role was in Trainwreck. But he's an actor who seems more famous for his off-screen life rather than his on-screen talent. Anyways, that Flash movie probably got delayed again.
  9. I look forward to the Red Letter Media guys mocking the Firefly Funhouse Match on the next edition of Best of the Worst.
  10. I'll be curious to see what my daily bus trip will be like after the sanctions are lifted. On the best of days, people are packed in like sardines during rush hour. I can only imagine that the bus will be a mix of people screaming "stay six feet away from me" as dozens of people pile onto the bus.
  11. It would be super awesome if the people behind those goddamned MasterClass commercials on Youtube went and filed for bankruptcy.
  12. Anybody have any thoughts on the built-in Fire TV experience? I'm looking at upgrading to a 4k TV, but I've read some complaints about stuff like ads in the menus.
  13. https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2020/04/02/nfls-chief-medical-officer-softens-the-leagues-prior-message-regarding-2020-planning/ Goodell and co. apparently told their Chief Medical Officer to shut the hell up when he tried to act like their may not be an NFL season. Honestly, I think at this point most of us desperate for a return to normalcy are looking at the start of the NFL season as the best bellweather that things are turning around.
  14. I guess they could do an all-digital release, but I read it as the factories to make blu-rays/DVDs are all shut down right now.
