My first thought when watching that mess was "Jericho took everyone out drinking in Vegas the night before and he told Cole not to worry about planning the match"

Sabu came out of it looking better than anyone

To be fair, Sabu is pretty great.

I love that we’re less than 2 weeks removed from the really good FCA match with Roddy, and we’re already back to the “Jericho should retire” discourse. This man gets zero leeway lol. Absolutely no benefit of the doubt.

I think more people are crapping on Cole than Jericho, but I do agree with you for the most part. Especially with storylines, just like when Cody was here, the blame gets out on the worker instead of the booker. Jericho has a pretty good track record of having good matches throughout every year of AEW.

It’s like some of y’all ( @LF2)don’t understand that I don’t slander adam Cole because I’m jealous of his luscious hair. I am, but that’s not why. I slander him because he isn’t very good. He’s about the least believable “tough guy” on the roster and he got exposed badly by Chris Jericho, of all people. It’s also funny how he’s perceived as this “workrate god” by certain corners of the internet and yet the second the guy across the ring from him is anything less than fantastic, that shit goes right out the window. At what point do we all stop making excuses for adam Cole and just admit that he’s a product of hype and having a brand built specifically to make him look good for however many years?

I did not watch this match so can’t comment. I usually post on Cole to tease you more so then defend him. I’m not a big fan, outside of how lovable he was on UUDD playing Uno against Claudio (they got me through the pandemic, along with T90Official narrating Age of Enpires 2 matches and Grand Poobear playing Mario Maker 2) so I do have a level of respect for how he comes across outside of the ring. He isn’t really one of my guys and also I didn’t dig deep enough to maybe find some Indy classics, it just didn’t hit for me. I will defend his Suplex to Knee move he does because those knees are razor sharp.
One thing he does have going for him (which I feel works 100% better as a heel) is his in ring and during segment charisma. As a piece of shit dirtbag he just comes across so greasy and I want to punch him. It’s likely why Vince wanted him to be a manager. Yes, in real life he is likable, but he also comes across dopey and he’s the most teased guy on UUDD for making silly plays and quickly forgetting what the others players have. He’s a goofball and he’s kind. I’d rather him be a dick than a rough n tough girlfriend protector.
Part of me wishes he could be a heel and try less to be like Shawn Michaels and more like (hmmmmm, who should I say?) um Piper?
IDK, I’m mostly rambling and don’t have a point. He has an interesting fan base that is super into him. Very small sample size but his shirts I’d see people wear at breweries and around town. Is it the spots? The charisma? I could reach out and ask people. Like Gargano, he is a HHH and HBK guy, but probably not a Vince guy. Maybe he’s a Tony guy. I’ve been close a few time to write a piece on him. There is something there. It’s not for me, but idk.

No to be held here because it is too off topic of the PPV, it’d be interesting to compile a list of the style babies of different workers. Who came in and modeled themselves after HBK, Mysterio, Foley, Funk, Graham, Hart, Danielson, etc.

Finally got around to this week’s episode of My World, and Conrad almost got me considering buying this one with talk of how AEW always delivers on PPV and how this is going to be a sleeper great show. That guy has the makings of a decent salesman.

Honestly, this was a tough decision for me. I’ll likely skip outside of a spur of the moment buy. Build up hasn’t done it for me in a lot of ways. I would prefer Rush beating up MJF. Buuuut, I did drink some zingers with my brother while everyone in the house was taking a nap and will have a family bbq where I will drink more. Last time I was wiggle I still bought a PPV after not fully being sold on it for the very reason that they usually live up to it. Who knows what will happen. I’m gonna grab a Ham’s now that I’m home. Then I’ll have some fancy heavy IPA. Then after putting meat in me will probably want to watch people hit each other charismatically. Unless, someone finds daisuke sekimoto vs. shuji ishikawa BJW from March 2015, maybe I’ll AEW. Or I could get more hammered and watch an ~art film~ or write stuff. Or get even more hammered and go on a walk and cry.

  5. Hey, not sure if it’s annoying to ask for link requests but I’ve been searching for this one for a bit: Daisuke Sekimoto vs. Shuji Ishikawa - BJW March 31st, 2015 (aired I believe April 14th so it could be under either date). I love me some Sekimoto beefy grappling.

Re: Misawa vs Kobashi. I’d love to travel down the King’s Road chronologically (like our friend @Matt D is doing, if you’re not reading his thread on that I highly recommend checking it out. Agree or disagree with certain takes, it’s a fantastic thread!).

The Sabu vs. Terry Funk barbed wire match is one of my favorite matches ever. It is less of a match and more of a reflection of the decay of society.

What are the 10 (or five if you want a smaller number) favorite Greggulator matches?

If the idea of AEW being this revolution, or… whatever, hinges entirely on a group of 3-4 wrestlers and dies if they ever leave - then my argument is that it’s not really what it’s advertised to be in that case.

was Andre The Giant really "undefeated for 15 years" ?  Obviously the "never been slammed" thing was total bullshit.

Full disclosure: I copied this off of an Administrator of “Kayfabe Board” but this’ll give you stuff to track down on Cagematch if you like

    Spoiler

    Andre the Giant Losses
    - via Pinfall / Submission / Knockout or Technical Knockout ... Clean Losses

Note: Each loss is numbered. The sequence of numbers lists the historical order of clean losses in the style of Mixed-Martial-Arts (MMA), Boxing and other competitive combat sports. Clear-cut definitive wins and losses are defined by the way athletic commissions, sports news agencies, and legitimate sports authorities define them. If the loss is in a handicap match, obviously, no legitimate athletic commission would sanction such a contest, but the loss is recorded here (and preceded by an asterisk instead of a number) due to any significant conjecture regarding a disputed claim or longstanding rumor surrounding the match. There were numerous disqualification losses which, obviously, do not count as clean losses and are not listed because they were not disputed nor were they significant in any way (other to build a fictional storyline).

England - working as "Jean Ferre"

    1) June 7, 1969: Kendo Nagasaki (Peter Thornley) beat Jean Ferre by technical knockout (TKO) in Hanley, England..

    2) October 2, 1969: Kendo Nagasaki (Peter Thornley) again beat Jean Ferre by technical knockout (TKO), this time in Brierley Hill, England..

    * October 16, 1969: Andy Robbins beat Jean Ferre in a 2-out-of-3 falls match. It is safe to say that at least one of these losses were by disqualification. Were both falls lost by disqualification? More than likely, which is why we have the asterisk preceding this note, just like the next two losses, both of which were handicap matches and can't be considered legitimate.
(Remember that the term "legitimate" is used loosely here, as no legitimate athletic commission or sports organization would ever sanction any sort of "handicap match" or 2-on-1 contest. This is taking into consideration the premise of wrestling being presented to the public as a sport.)

    * Date (in 1969) and Location Unknown: Tibor Szakacs & Gwynn Davies beat Jean Ferre in a handicap match..

    * Date (in 1969) and Location Unknown: Gwynn Davies & Albert Wall beat Jean Ferre in a handicap match..

Japan - working as "Monster Roussimoff" ...

    3) January 14, 1970: Strong Kobayashi beat Monster Roussimoff via pinfall in Oita, Japan..

Iraq - working as "Monster Roussimoff" ...

    4) January 1971: Andre, working as Monster Roussimoff, lost to Sheik Adnan el-Kaissey in Baghdad, Iraq via pinfall..

    5) January 1971: Andre, as Monster Roussimoff, lost, again, to Sheik Adnan el-Kaissey in Kuit, Iraq via pinfall..

United States - working as "The Polish Giant" Jean Ferre...

    6) January 22, 1972: Baron Von Raschke beat "The Polish Giant" Jean Ferre in Detroit, in what was Andre's first pinfall loss on U.S. soil..

Japan - working as "Monster Roussimoff" ...

    7) April 27, 1972: Andre lost to Karl Gotch in Nagoya, Japan via pinfall...

😎 April 30, 1972: Andre lost to Karl Gotch in Tokyo, Japan via pinfall...

    9) May 6, 1972: Andre lost to Strong Kobayashi in the fourth IWA World Series Final in Morioka, Japan via pinfall..

    10) May 31, 1972: Andre lost to Don Leo Jonathan via pinfall (though some dispute this and claim it was via DQ) in Montreal, Quebec Canada...

    11) December 18, 1972: Andre lost to Killer Kowalski via pinfall; Quebec City...

    12) February 10, 1974: Andre lost to The Sheik when the referee stopped the match "due to injury" (thus, the equivalent of a referee stoppage due to a "tko" in Mixed Martial Arts or boxing) in Toronto, Ontario Canada.. (some reports have the date as February 17th)..

    13) October 7, 1976: Andre lost to Antonio Inoki via technical knockout (TKO) when the referee stopped the match; Tokyo, Japan...

    * April 5, 1977: Andre lost to Southern Champion Jerry Lawler via count-out (being out of the ring longer than it takes the referee to count to 10 or 20, depending on the particular rules in a given promotion) in Louisville, KY.. At the time, it was implied to have been a pinfall loss in wrestling magazines edited by Bill Apter, which infuriated Andre's booking agent, Vince McMahon Sr. Lawler would confirm, decades later in his book, that it was by count-out and not by pin, but it caused a big commotion at the time...

    * March 5, 1978: Andre the Giant and Roy Welch lost to Ron Garvin via pinfall in a handicap match at a TV Taping in Knoxville, TN (However the footage of the match gets cut off before the end..) This was repeated at the TV Tapings held at the Freedom Hall in Johnson City, TN, with Scott Armstrong confirming this..

    14) February 12, 1984: Andre lost to UWA Champion El Canek via pinfall in a 2-out-of-3 falls match at a UWA show; Naucalpan, Mexico...

    15) June 17, 1986: Andre lost to Antonio Inoki via submission (armbar) in Nagoya, Japan; New Japan Pro Wrestling. This was Andre's only submission loss..

    16) March 29, 1987: Andre lost to WWF Champion Hulk Hogan via pinfall at WrestleMania 3 in Pontiac, MI...

    17) July 3, 1988: Andre lost to Hulk Hogan in a cage match at WrestleFest '88 in Milwaukee, WI; (Hogan exited the cage to win)...

    18) June 8, 1989 - Flint, MI: Hillbilly Jim beat Andre the Giant via pinfall. Sources have been checked and double checked repeatedly and it appears to be legit; Jim went on to win 7 more times but it was via DQ..

    19) July 28, 1989 - Las Vegas, NV: Ultimate Warrior beat Andre the Giant via pinfall..

    20) 1989: Intercontinental Champion Ultimate Warrior pinned Andre at least 9 times in the autumn during a house show tour. Some sources list 48 times (we list 48)...

Again, this is a sheer copy and paste from a google search. All the hard work is from CCG, an Administrator of a forum entitled “Kayfabe Board”

  10. Side note. If the Elite were to leave and Punk were to stay, what percentage of the audience would leave?  We can measure the bump CM Punk adds. It would be interesting to see the other side of the Venn Diagram.

Are you asking why one of WWE's top draws in the past 20 years has been booked so poorly in AEW that he's an afterthought?

Danielson has always said he just goes along with booking and doesn't play politics - Punk calls his own shots and rarely loses matches, so he's still an attraction. Danielson has lost countless times in the past two years.

Now, you can say Danielson is an extremely generous person for putting over younger talent. But no one wants to pay to see him lose or go 50/50 with an unknown. He's just another guy now since Tony books everyone in AEW like that, save for MJF and Punk.

PWG booking makes good matches, it doesn't make good stars.

Lots of interesting points here. I do think Danielson can be a big deal still/ again. Just watching the Iron Man match and seeing the crowd going nuts late into a match like that was so unbelievable. I love the BCC when they’re stomping fools but maybe having him as a lone tweener bully he wouldn’t be an “afterthought”. Probably not too late once we get BCC implosion post Elite. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Or in the BCC - Elite shenanigans they announce Danielson v Omega for Quake by the Lake 2 and give me front row seats and it hits Rikidozan tv ratings levels.

And if I remember right, only four people have ever consistently asked him how the shows were drawing: Austin, Rock, Jericho and Punk. I think that’s right, I know it definitely included Jericho and Punk.

People want to rag on the “I’m trying to run a business” thing from the gripebomb, but it’s always been pretty clear he cares a lot (maybe too much) about wrestling and the company he’s working for when he’s fully invested.

I remember Dax saying he asked about ticket sales/ buys of the ROH PPV they had the Briscoes dog collar match. I don’t remember the numbers but enough of a bump he brought it up at least.

  12. Jade would be no match for ABADDON!!!!11!1!

After we get a random hardcore match with Mickie Knuckles.

    ——-

I am very WCW ignorant. Especially the NWO-Goldberg-Crow Sting main event period. As a WWF-only kid I still find that all icky WCW (but respected the video game). Watching the undercard is fantastic and pre-Hogan is fun though and a revelation to discover years after the fact.

  13. In booking, Willow is potentially doing what I thought Red Velvet was being booked towards, pre-Baddies turn. Each match making improvements towards a win. Velvet with more spunk but Willow’s raw likability makes her an excellent fit for that role. I would be very cool with Willow being the one to dethrone Jade.

I’m ok with waiting on Statlander, depending on how much longer. Idk, as long as you have enough quality opponents to feed Jade to that isn’t the entire roster.

I love Athena’s persona and her being an AEW champ would have been cool, but her current heel persona shouldn’t be the one to beat Jade. She is one of my favorite wrestlers now that she tapped into her petty UUDD personality. So if Jade turns face or face tweener against some heels, then that could work.

Brit doesn’t need it and that victory should be held for someone else. But her and Hayter as belt buddies would be a cool visual. Maybe save that for the eventual women’s tag belts.

Shida is badass. With the right feud it could be cool.

Or just have Jade never lose. Get a really high number of wins and something something. Derp
