  1. Well said. I thoroughly loved this show. Shibata v Ospreay was a lot of fun from start to finish. I hope I never get wrapped up in some idea of what Pro Wrestling should be that I can't enjoy a match this entertaining. Nice Danielson Video package. Would've liked a narrator separate from the regular voice, but a very minor complaint. Bucks promo offered their regular hilarity. Renee worked hard not to break. I dig Okada/Ferrari arrivals. Privates v Bucks was fantastic at least 3/4 way thru. The finish was a bit unfortunate. Less the trigger misfire than both Jacksons pinning Quen, and that being acceptable. Almost made me long for a JR bellyache. Previous to that tho, this was another example of the Jacksons' pulling the best matches out of whomever their opponents are. I don't recall Private Party being anywhere close to this level against anybody but the Bucks. Nice little Darby/Tony Hawk charity plug. Jericho/Hook promo was good. Especially good for a babyface Jericho promo. Willow v Skye v Anna v Stat was terrific. Both Stat and Willow especially looked great. Mercedes arrival seemed a bit light on the fan fare. I didn't expect much from her commentary - she seems to require a script. I'm not gonna further bury her tho, I suspect her in ring will do the best talking possible, and it's not far off. Dustin/Butcher promo was pretty fun. Butch sounded great. Kinda dumb 'Cause I'm a legend' finish by Dustin, but yeah, let's go! OC/Trent v Kingdom was a nice solid TV bout. I really dug OC punching Taven in the face to begin. Bucks v Trent/OC is gonna be a barnburner. Plucky happy to be there Kyle O'Reilly promo was just fine, but could they not have given his opponent? You can't 'In action' somebody talking so much about the great roster. Copeland Video package was really good. Looking forward to the next round of Cope Opens. Following up on the previous week with highlights as seen throughout the show is a quiet but big improvement. Takeshita v Swerve was as tremendous as expected. Very nice build to the hot closing stretch. Don Callis commentary is always a little gift. This show feels like a clear example that you're never going to please everyone. #234 was better than most TV Wrestling I've ever seen. High voter. AEDub, thanks for the thrills!
  2. Completely with you on the Sultans of Swing. I have a 7 inch archiving this wonderful recording. Wouldn't mind adding the 'Walk of Life' to my collection too. Stuff like 'Barbie Girl', Cardigans or AOB get locked in my head, and I hate it. Heartbreaker - Zepp, Stones or Benatar? I similarly admired great pop songs, but as I said certain jingles are not welcome. I don't know what I would do if I were forced to listen to Pop Country.
  3. 29:50 - Phil speaks the goddamn truth. Listen in all - especially the 'pocket watchers'. "This is the best use of a Billionaire's money in the world..."
  4. I think Aminata v Billie could go either way. Let's all band together to WILL Beer City Bruiser into the fold.
  5. Absolutely! It's a very significant album in Jazz and Miles' catalog. It's kinda the beginnings of 'Modal Jazz'. In the US it was released as 'Jazz Track' which is the version I have. It's a bit less repetitive, condenscing down to the essentials with a B side of 3 huge Miles cuts featuring the Sextet that would go on to record Kind of Blue. Oh man, check out 'Elevator to the Gallows', it's so good, and you'll have the bonus of knowing that soundtrack.
  6. I've heard similarily of the Vanishing. I totally disagree on Insomnia. Nolan's remake is a rare case of a director arguably topping the original. I really like the '97 Danish film, and love Stellan Skarsgard, but Nolan's version ups the ante with Wally Pfister's incredible cinematography. It's a big component of the film - you could argue budgetary reasons between the two versions, but obviously a bigger budget doesn't always or often reflect improvement. Not to say the original isn't well cast (it is), but the casting for Nolan's film is my main reason for preferring his version. Robin Williams villain is amongst the best things of his career, and Al Pacino perfectly fits the role of a celebrity cop. This is my favorite latter day Pacino role (if you can still call it latter day). Al was on a roll here coming off the Insider and the underrated Any Given Sunday. This is the last of his good to great roles til the Irishman. I love remembering tired Al trying to deal with everything spiralling out of control. So fun! Hilary Swank, who was also on a good run, is perfect as the local law enforcement. Understated work from Maura Tierney as well. This is amongst my favorite Nolan films - alongside Memento, Oppenheimer, and Dunkirk. All that said, I think both Erik Skoldbjaerg's 97 original and Nolan's remake are well worth seeing. Both provide plenty of thrills.
  7. Neat list. I always confuse Naked City with Night and the City. I've seen the latter, but really need to see the former. There's some wrestling in that one. Jules Dassin is a master filmmaker and I've yet to see anything that wasn't fantastic. I saw clips of the Vanishing remake when I was a kid, and it always stuck with me. I have the Criterion original, but have yet to see it. I suspect it's in your wheelhouse. Le Samourai is an all time great from an all time great. This and Elevator to the Gallows (featuring an incredible Miles Davis score) are my two favorites from the treasure trove of the Jean-Pierre Melville catalog. It might be worth approaching this a second time after a little research. There's a lot going on here - very inventive. I always enjoy hearing Tarantino discuss this classic. He nicely lays out a lot of why this movie rocks. I do see how on the surface the Euro pace of La Samourai would be a miss for many. I would suggest it's a great second watch movie for anybody willing to give it that. Beau's Afraid was the first Ari Aster film I actually enjoyed. If you're looking for a fast paced anxious mind-bender it'll fit the bill. Being There, you know. So just dive back in. Hal Ashby rules. This, Harold and Maude, The Last Detail and Shampoo are all masterpieces. I don't think you need much encouraging for On the Waterfront. Let it lead you into a bigger dive of the Kazan catalog - A Face in the Crowd, East of Eden, Streetcar Named Desire, Splendor in the Grass etc etc etc. Very curious of the Silent Partner. That's on Criterion, so maybe I'll take this as a reminder. I don't know much about Summer of Sam, but I'm curious to see just about any Spike Lee Joint. Even if he is very hit and miss. Fun list full of nice reminders.
  8. I just saw this show. I agree on the Martinez v Starks opener. Mercedes is such a pro. Billie is already really good, but continues to improve each week. What a hand Mercedes is. I also liked Aminata v Velvet. Aminata is coming into her own. I sense she's winning this tournament. The Eddie Kingston promo was particularly awesome. My favorite thing on this show. I really wish they'd utilize his promo more regularly on the Honor Club. If the Men's Champions aren't gonna wrestle regularly they might as well promo about what they're seeing happening. Shit is pretty aimless without regular Champions 'In Action'. Sydal v London Lightning was a good showcase opportunity for the Ontario Indy performer. Lightning has some solid fundamentals and footwork. Sydal is another great hand. 'Lee Johnson in action' says a lot about this show. At least the local was over. Shirakawa v Jay was solid. Patient eyes will agree that Anna has come a ways. I really like that she refrains from some of the flimsy offense she showed early in her run. I skimmed/skipped most everything else. I have to admit, not a fan of Lexi/Billie/Athena promos, but I'm happy it's helped get them over, and promo reps in general. Could've used a word from Mark Briscoe, or did I accidentally skim passed? Briscoe v Eddie will not doubt rule. I'm hoping for strong showings in the Women's Title bouts. Athena gets the best out of her PPV opponents, and I expect as much with Shida. Billie v Amanita could be interesting.
  9. The bolded line could be said about a great many of his films. Wider pushed the envelope in progressive ways throughout his incredible catalog. Not sure how I missed mentioning that canonized all time great film. Yeah, I love it too.
  10. Sick day Raw over here. A Cody Rhodes promo where he boasts about all his humble friendly gestures had me really wanting for the elite boobirds. Everybody point towards the sign! Ugh. Cody should run back the US v UK feud in the Universe. It would clearly work. I ffwd thru the Rock staredown. *fart sound. Loved seeing them runback McDonagh v Riccochet. These two have great chemistry. Ricc has a neat skillset, but leaves a lot to be desired as a character. They oughtta find him a suitable tag partner to offset his weaknesses. CM Punk/McIntyre/Freakin promo was far more hit and miss for me than most. Rollins is always insufferable on the mic. Punk sounded petulant here. Getting all hot and bothered by Drew. The skirt line was lame, as was a lot of his drippy promo, but at every turn there was Drew McIntyre, cool and collected, saving the bit. Lamest of all - a nod to Cornette? Very progressive! What was it he and his lackey were saying about Janel Grant? Further, what was Punk thinking playing up the guest ref spot he can't do? Anyway, Drew was outstanding as per usual. Skimmed passed most of Freakin, and much of the next hour or so. I'd love to see Vinci v Andrade get some time. Judgment Day beatdown felt like a solid Heyman booking as does a lot of the better stuff on here. Ripley/Lynch promo I caught the end of. Great punch from Lynch on Dirty Dom. I love Ripley, but not into her playing a cool heel for Lynch to drown. Not the strongest creative. Zayn/Gable skits were goofy like any magic camera skit, but I would never deny Zayn's abilities. So wait, Gable, arguably the best wrestler in the company doesn't have a match on WM? Dying for him to jump across the aisle. Zayn v Reed was fun while it lasted. I so wish criminally underrated Reed had stuck around NJPW for a year. I could not care any less about Uso v Nakamura, so skimmed passed. I loved the closing angle as all of you. 'Tears in the Rain' indeed! Rock is as wonderful as all of you have already said. It's always fun to see Goofy Rhodes take a beating. Lots of WWE brand product to skip here, but a bit of fun mixed in.
  11. Huge Billy Wilder fan. I'd maybe start with the Film Noir classic Double Indemnity with (the greatest actor of all time?) Barbara Stanwyck and Fred McMurray, or maybe Kirk Douglas in Ace in the Hole. Wilder has a pretty wide array of films. From some of the best comedies ever made to gritty dramas, but for comparison to Fuller, Ace would work well, or maybe even better yet The Lost Weekend with Ray Milland and Jane Wyman. Most everything I've ever seen from from Wilder is top shelf - Seven Year Itch, Irma La Douce, Stalag 17, Witness for the Prosecution, Some Like it Hot and especially the Apartment. You could start with the Apartment. I back the Play of any of the films listed, and would be interested to hear your thoughts. Looking over his filmography I see a lot of films I've still yet to see - nice to know there's more.
  12. Really curious of this one. I watched the wild looking trailer when the Ken Russell set went up. Yeah, I thought that movie was really good. I'd like to see some more of her work. I also rewatched Naked Kiss after your review. It'd been so long that I'd forgotten some of the things I loved about it. In particular, the inventive camera work. That opening is so f_cking awesome. I did remember how great the lead is from Constance Towers, and the hauntingly beautiful song she sings with the kids. There's a great interview with Towers on the Criterion set (which might be on the channel) talking about the film and Fuller. There's also some neat Samuel Fuller interview archives. The South Bank show interview really gives a great impression of what an intelligent and interesting artist he was. It's complimented nicely by a brief interview with Wim Wenders talking about Sam the man.
  13. What if you just isolate this one track, and put it on repeat... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T4dP43KWaSU That's amongst my favorites of the entire catalog. My introduction to Witch Trials was a deluxe set that included this fabulous (2nd) Peel Session which I've coincidentally been listening to in rotation this past week... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eatYgj5Fj30 EDIT: Ugh, I was commenting on Witch Trials for some odd reason. Perveted by Language is maybe my favorite Fall album. I'm of the belief that the B Side is amongst the best sides I've ever heard. I especially love this... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yE-6xoh1khg I get the idea of 'supposed' to like REM's early catalog. I rejected this notion for many, many years. The thing that change me on the Athens juggernaut was seeing some of the early TV performances - in particular this thrilling Tube offering... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qwmHd2uhtm8 I love those other two you mentioned. There's certainly nostalgia attached to it, but Eliminator and ZZ Top in general, for me, gets better with each passing year. And yeah, I've heard those hits far too many times to still like them. But i do! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FbyCWAcHSGE I saw SunnO))) here in Toronto in the Summer of 2016 at an old generating station. It was unreal. The loudest performance I'll probably ever gladly experience. The rumble made the ceiling rain some sort of ungodly dusty old shit that may have taken some years off of our lives. Monoliths & Dimensions was where I came in, and still enjoy firing it up from time to time. I just now saw that the Hearn Generating Station show here in TO is on Bandcamp... https://sunn-live.bandcamp.com/album/sunn-o-20160610-hearn-generating-station-toronto-can I also saw Stephen O'Malley play with Kali Malone last year at a downtown Church. It was excellent show and a reminder what a interesting open minded artist he is. Love Will Tear Us Apart and West End Girls is about as good as it gets. I asked a pal who was working at a grocery store, and complaining about the repetition of bad music, what was a song he'd heard over and over that he could still get down with. Heart of Glass was his answer. Curious what song(s) might fit that bill for our @Curt McGirt ?
  14. During the build to the OC Forbidden Door bout it seemed very clear Ospreay needed to get to the US to showcase his mic game alongside his stellar in-ring. If the archive is alive it will not lie that at least one bingo card showed this. I would assume there were more.
  15. I just watched this really fun MCMG match v Bailey/Gresham from a year ago that I'd missed... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HoxLyMRYXxU
  16. Yeah, I'm on the side of absolutely sign the Motor City Machine Guns! I've loved everything I've seen from them over the past year or so. To my tastes they're every bit as valuable to the tag divsion as Okada to the Mens and Mercedes to the Womens.
  17. Just saw Wim Wenders' late career masterpiece 'Perfect Days'. Outstanding lead from the deserving 76h Annual Cannes Film Festival Best Actor Award winning Koji Yakusho. I suspected I would like this film, but this blew away my reasonable expectations. I really hope this movie is seen and appreciated by the widest audience possible.
  18. Hmmm, good question, not sure if I understand it completely, but let's give it a shot. 1. Scott Steiner v Hunter Helmsley - Royal Rumble 2. Kane/Taker v Kanyon/DDP - Summerslam 2001 3. Hunter Helmsley v Booker T - Wrestlemania 4. Hunter Helmsely v Rocky v Mick Foley v Sonofabitch Paul Wight - Wrestlemania 5. Undertaker v Kurt Angle - Fully Loaded
  19. Any fans of Niri Bilge Ceylan? I was privileged enough to see his newest 'About Dry Grasses' on Thursday afternoon. A novelistic 3 hour 17 minute masterpiece. Beautiful cinematography and incredible performances throughout. The topic of power dynamics on full display. This film is by no means for everyone, but I encourage anybody who values consciousness expansion from their movie-going to take a good long look. This was my favorite of the three Ceylan films I've seen (Wintersleep and Once Upon a Time in Anatolia). Maybe in part because of the captivating big screen experience. Here's the Coens reuniting with Josh Brolin's Llewelyn Moss to introduce the Turkish master... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y4AeXMEIeNI
  20. This just triggered a memory of Bret talking sense to battling brother-in-laws Davey and Owen. And the Two Time Slammy Award Winner bursting into tears. One of the greatest moments in the history of Wrestling. Not that they'll try and emulate their heroes, but it's got me wondering who could be the one to bring these two old friends back together.
  21. Pretentious - attempting to impress by affecting greater importance, talent, culture, etc., than is actually possessed. The arguable best tag team in wrestling seem less fitting than…
  22. I'm praying NO to 3 hour Dynamites, but excess is kind of the name of the Khan game. Seems obvious the Rampage rating goes up from usual, but the potentially negative effect on Dynamite going to 3 is something I hope they seriously weigh. Tho, UGH, suddenly feels ineviable. I'm partially against this because I watch Dynamite before work on Thursday mornings, and 3 hours will throw a wrench into the works. It's also kinda passed my single sitting threshold.
  23. I've only ever seen his first two films which are more in the giallo tradition - Bird with the Crystal Plummage and Cat o Nine Tails. I dug both, but particularly Crystal Plummage. I'd like to see both the films you mentioned, I just so rarely find myself wanting horror. I dare all Argento fans to watch his excellent acting turn in Gaspar Noe's underrated, and strangely compassionate, 2021 film Vortex.
  24. I thought similarily, but I think they actually tailored a few things here to make certain Hook was the babyface. The entrance music being first and foremost. Flares and an even more pronounced overhang, but Eddie's in ring acumen and all around genius easily rises above these poor presentation choices. I may be alone, but I find the yellow kickpads shabby as well. I know, I know Kawada. Other than Mariah May, whom I'd really like to see revert back to her own (far better) look sooner than later, I find the cosplay in AEW consistently awful. Remember that Ninja Turtle backpack looking thing Adam Cole wore for his big PPV title match? There are so many great examples of awful cosplay gear. And regular gear. Also, my gawd, the music last night was just awful. Fucking Alter Bridge sing-a-long. That Will Ospreay theme is unbelievably shitty. As is the somehow-worse-than-the-original new Dynamite theme. Buttrock galore! I was so thankful for Action Bronson last night. And Jane!
  25. There isn't a bad seat in the entire Coca-Cola Coliseum. Nice view over there. Natch, you're a kind gentleman. Yes, I absolutely did have a great time. Here's what I saw and felt... Caps lock TK promo prior to the countdown. Mercedes promo to kick off the show. No, I won't chant 'CEO'. The crowd reaction was good, but a bit milder than you want after a week. Throwing to a video of herself? Ugh, please turn her heel - I promise I'll like her in that role. I'm not at all into putting weird heat on Willow, but I am patient enough to see how this plays out. I was not at all a fan of this lame opening segment, but I suppose it served its purpose. Bucks/Okada promo was tremendous fun. Alex Marvez has found his best role. We noticed that Ferrari on the way into the building. Everybody riding in on the 511 saw it too. Eddie v Okada was spectacular. Our section was dealing with some kind of offshoot of the Cult of Cornette determined to get himself over at the expense of Okada. It was kind of amusing to imagine how this obnoxious malcontent makes his way thru a day. It was easy to imagine some beatings he's received. Adjustments were made, and I loved this match as much as the arena. Great heat! Eddie Kingston is a total pro, and made Okada here. And heel Okada is one of the best things in pro wrestling right now. Bucks on production were tremendous. Okada v Pac! Swerve promo was good. I really dug Jericho v Hook. Truly selfless performance from Lionheart. I also like the prospects of a heel turn - I suspect that's where that promo was leading? Great showcase for Hook. Adam Cole promo was fine, if a bit corny in it's telegraphing of the future. Does Wardy and MJF reunite out of this nonsense? Will Ospreay promo was how ya do it. Maybe Mercedes was paying attention? Toni/Mariah v Thunder/Deonna was a slight affair, and a bit disappointing for that reason. I need to rewatch this. Did Rosa no sell the best move in wrestling? I'd love for Mariah to find a way out of the cosplay. It's been fun and all, but I much prefer her own presentation. Swerve v Butcher was a nice surprise. Very pleased to see Butch, and he gave Swerve a nice showcase. Slight points taken for his bad moving into position (hopefully not caught on TV) for the stomp, but let's forget about that. Excellent promo segment with Joe and especially the always top notch Don (NUCLEAR HEAT for that treat). Christian v Adam Copeland was so fun to be in that arena for. Great, great heat! A lot of the actual match was out of my view (I don't like looking at the screen), so I wanna take a look at the televised version before offering too much opinion. I wasn't crazy about the overbooked finish, which I did see, but it was too fun to complain. I also wanna see the Jay White/Asses promo which I mostly missed. It sounded fun. The Acclaimed promo on the otherhand. Ugh. It felt like a long lecture from a pair of blowhard goofs. I really want these guys to get on track, but that was awful to have to sit thru. OC/Trent v Fletcher/Hobbs was a total darkhorse for match of the night. All 4 pros. Fletcher and OC had some beautiful looking exchanges. Hobbs continuously powerslaming Orange on the lip of the ring was amongst my favorite spots all night. Loved this match! Shibata squash was an absolute treat. Very much looking forward to Ospreay v Shibata! Missed the Copeland celebration. Takeshita v Rocky was really good until the Blue Thunder Bomb nonfinish. Such a bummer, but not enough for me to forget my enjoyment prior. Rocky's a great hand, but whomever made that call failed as a producer. The hot crowd was ice cold for the beginning of Stat/Willow v Julia/Skye. Only caught the beginning. Exhaustion was setting in, so my lady friend and I hit the bricks to beat the rush out. I've heard good things tho. I'm gonna play it back today hopefully, but I got a matinee date to get to with Turkish master Nuri Bilge Ceylan and his 'About Dry Grasses'. Anyway, yeah, I loved the live experience of this show. Definitely worth @DEAN's patented 'AEWrulesthemotherfuckingworld'. What a card shaping up for Quebec City!
