  1. I can’t see this show as anything other than a solid success and it definitely exceeded my expectations for production / major league feel. I was satisfied by the end of Jericho’s in-ring promo...and then Moxley shows up unannounced (literally - no music or titantron started playing illogically, he just burst out of the crowd) and its a huge hook for what’s to come next.

That was a theme for the night - solid, sometimes predictable booking (e.g. Battle Royale) that made sense and set the stage for the next chapter. Dustin/Cody was another example, with the heartfelt promo that was truly emotional without being melodramatic.

I can’t remember the last time I watched a non TakeOver PPV live end-to-end without getting distracted or bored. Like someone else mentioned, the variety was probably the reason for that.

The announcing / production slip ups are forgivable at this stage, but will be less so 8 weeks into the TNT show. They have a solid foundation, and Excalibur was a revelation having not watched any PWG. Wade Keller made a good point in his Roundtable discussion that Excalibur not only made the save when JR/Marvez gave a factual error or missed an important story beat, but did so in the smoothest, most respectable and professional way so as not to embarrass or undermine his co-announcers which is so refreshing after the WWE 3 man booth’s usual antics.

No idea how/if the weekly show will be shown in Australia, but will definitely check it out if I can.

  2. Typical WWE. Amazing talent, good matches, moments of genuine excitement and engagement like the Bayley cash-in, overshadowed by the godawful booking choices which undermine the literal blood sweat and tears from the wrestlers and the entire crew. It just needlessly leaves a sour taste in your mouth after an otherwise enjoyable show.

Also, Chris Jericho needs to go to the same place Reby Hardy needs to go to hire themselves a Twitter filter for his ill advised drunken comments. AEW will burn through their goodwill with a chunk of the more neutral fans just hoping for a viable alternative.

  3. So the 7 matches announced plus entrances would presumably be a solid three hours, with the top three singles matches all getting decent time. That seems like a sweet spot to me - quality over quantity.

I wonder if they throw in an unannounced show opener a la Matt Cross / MJF from All In?

  4. Well from a selfish perspective I’m so glad it’s not a cm punk burnout situation and seems to be more creative constraints that made Ambrose leave. Early FCW/WWE Ambrose was compelling and it’s exciting to think about what he’s been frustratedly cooking up for the past few months. AEW would be huge, but anywhere he ends up wrestling will bring the intrigue and the buzz.

I did sympathise with the view that, when he got really sick in hospital, he just thought ‘fuck this it’s not worth it’ and was going to retire with his millions and loving wife, but again selfishly I’m glad it’s not the case.

Not sure if the barb wire etc is indicating he’ll be doing a lot of extreme hardcore stuff again or if it’s simply ‘on brand’ for Moxley.

  5. @Peck it looks like you’ve been frozen in time with the same expression and all these wrestlers are coming up, wondering what you’re looking at, then Big E is like ‘fuck it let’s go with it’ in his quirky way and just pretends to be a statue too.

Jokes aside, very jealous of all your pics with wrestlers that you share on here, lucky man.

I can empathize as those are the times WWE and MMA goes out live in the UK. WWE is midnight till 4am. UFC's main card starts at 3am.

These are the times when living in Sydney pays off, as I can leisurely watch NJPW events live at a reasonable time.

I really enjoyed Naito/Ibushi and didnt think EVIL/ZSJ was bad either.

I was never big on him anywhere else he worked, but Kevin Kelly is growing on me as an announcer. I’ve also enjoyed the extended faction retrospectives that he narrates on the official YouTube channel.

Seriously, Nickel and Dime? Call them by their values like everyone else does. British kids only have to remember that a Pound is a hundred pennies, because every other coin is named after it's value.

Well only for the past couple of generations. Before then it was two bob this and farthing that and half a crown the other. 'Stick a pony in my pocket'? Pretty esoteric to an outsider.

Even when I was working in a south London pub a few years ago we'd be talking about cash in terms of scores / tons etc.

Anyway, on topic, not a fan of the shooty shooty bullshit but I think a lot of people are underplaying how well and how quickly Ronda has taken to the pro wrestling. If only she would stop firing off the verbose and artificial promos at machine-gun speed.

  8. RIP Keith. Prodigy were a regular on the UK music festival circuit in the 00s so had the pleasure of seeing them live a few times, never a bad show.

Also, one of the few bands who brought the ravers and the metal heads together (FWIW I fit very much in the second camp)

I was thinking that same thing when I saw it.

That’s exactly what I said in the general discussion thread. Oh well, I’m glad it’s as we thought and good news. It will be very interesting to see how he gets booked over the next few weeks, and also how everything else is booked too.

Will all the other promised changes through Dec/Jan, however surface level they were anyway, be rolled back because Vince has his ace back? Will the woman’s angles take a back seat? Will all the NXT guys just shuffle back whence they came?

  10. I got this game a couple of weeks ago on the ps4 in a sale, it was really cheap by Aussie standards.

Ive spent most of my time just filling out the rosters with downloaded WWE / AEW / Oldies but creating a wrestler was pretty fun too. Being a Brit I couldn’t resist using ZSJ’s voice samples where he basically just swears at the other guy.

  11. Wow Roman looks in fantastic shape in that photo. Obviously looks can be deceiving with cancer but that does not look like a man who has recently (god willing) come out the other side of a serious health scare. Hats off to the man for his dedication.

edit to add: I so wish they could have held off the desperation just this once. Imagine Roman coming out to a completely surprised crowd. That would have rivalled any pop this decade, I reckon.

  12. Turning 35 this year, and (as you do) realising it is not as old as I used to think it was at 15, I started thinking about where some of my favourites were at 35 and how beat up and broken down (or not) they were. Not wanting to be a downer, I just find you get a new level of empathy with someone when you reach their age:

Mick Foley - had retired at WrestleMania 2000 a couple of months previously, had already sustained that laundry list of injuries on the back cover of his first book, but would still go on to a couple of high profile programmes with Orton/Edge/ whatever that was in TNA

Daniel Bryan - had just retired due to concussions, having spent the last decade being considered the best in the world

The Rock - already a few years removed from his run at the top, having remained virtually injury free and in his physical prime, still 4 years away from his WM match with Cena

Bret Hart - IC champ feuding with Shawn Michaels w/ Sherri, considered a solid worker but a couple of years from being made as a top guy, 4 years from knee scoping etc, almost a decade of active competition ahead of him

Kind of unrelated but this almost makes me want to come up with some kind of DVDVR Bingo.  If such a thing were to exist it'd be fun to see what to add to the board.  Would come in most handy everytime there's a long thread about something.

    In no particular order:

    1. Mark Henry air bill

    2. Inside a steel Davey Richards

    3. Pants Free Punk

    4. How’s his missile dropkick

    5. Stuffing instead of potatoes

    6. Chris Masters is better than x

    7. Shawn Michaels and Kurt Angle are overrated because of X

    8. Settle down -netico

    9. BEN bunkhouse booking

    10. piranesi fashion watch

    11. Piranesi dean ambrose alternate hobo reality (I miss these...)

    12. Vince hobo army

     13. X throws the best punches

    14. Who / Jim Neidhart pun

Yes I’ve mostly lurked for 13 years, reading  DVDVR threads. What have I done with my life...

On topic, couldn’t be more hyped for Double or Nothing, PAC/Hangman should be amazing and the rest of the card is rounding out to be pretty solid. How do they continue to sustain the buzz for the next 3 months? Will people start to fatigue with the general ‘we’re doing it different, we’re doing it for you’ and demand more specifics before they’ve even done their first show?

That main event was just painfully boring. The wrestling wasn't bad but I just don't care about Ciampa at all. Gargano was reaching that way for me but I loved the Black/Gargano cage match and thought his match with Ricochet was good too. Ciampa just needs to go to 205 already.

Enjoyed the rest of the card. Star marking performances from Bianca and the War Raiders.

I feel very similar to Tim and a few others. My favourite match is a toss-up between the Women's and the Tag title matches. I was completely caught up in the story and the drama between Shayna and Bianca and that hair whip and the aftermath looked brutal.

I agree that we could have done with the heavy character play of a Velveteen Dream match as the Ricochet and Ciampa matches were tipping the scales a lot towards the overindulgent / overwrought emotion / finisher kick-out fest.

I also realise the hypocrisy of saying that and then praising the tag match, which wasn't exactly light on crazy moves, but for whatever reason it felt a lot more palletable and well-paced in the tag context.

I still like to go back and read the sleaze thread when I'm feeling down. The section of the 2016 Impact thread when it appeared the Harris Brothers were going to get the company is good for laughs when you're down.

Speaking of fun threads to revisit, I remember going back through Sebbeh65’s humorous WON quotes of WCW stupidity multiple times when I needed a giggle.

Edit to stay on topic: I recently subscribed to the Torch and Wade Keller is honestly the only one of the big wrestling journalist podcasters that I can stomach multiple times per week.

I am very intrigued by the Will team, if they could get on the same page they’d run through the competition.

Another odd couple team: the Kenny’s - Shamrock, Omega, Patera, Anderson.

    "Moving on from the penis,"

It was quite prominent before the spoiler...

Edit: ah, I see it was in reference to ‘the Big guy’.

  17. Moving on from the penis, I think I recall this came up a couple of years back but it’s a fun game: best survivor series team based on shared first name? Rick (Rude, Steamboat, Flair, Steiner, Martel) or Steve (Austin, Williams, Regal, Corino, Richards) maybe?

Also, some optional rules to consider:

    - Shoot and gimmick names allowed (in which case Sting could be added to the Steve’s)

    - non-English variations of the same name (Jack Brisco and Jacques Rougeau)

    - male and females allowed for gender neutral names (Jackie added to the above team)

    - 4 or 5 person teams? 4 opens up some more options

Martel should be in the above average group!

In tag matches was very good as either the face in peril or the face coming in like a house of fire after getting he hot tag.

He’s hot tagging Mike Sanders (?!?!?!) and yes, definitely doesn’t belong in this thread for many reasons
