I love most things AEW do, but those tournament brackets are disgracefully bad. They couldn't even stretch to 16 teams?! If you bring in maybe two NJPW teams (don't need to be Japan based either, why not West Coast Wrecking Crew?), two CMLL and two indy teams, you can easily make a 32 team bracket. Not this bullshit procession to Bucks getting a win back over FTR in the final.

Where are Moxley and Claudio? Gates Of Agony? You gave Lionhook their silly team name, sling them in the mix to progress their storyline a bit. The Gunns, The Acclaimed, does having a six man tag title make them allergic to normal tag matches? AEW is so great when it ignores all the silly unwritten rules that WWE falls back on, I wish they could have ignored the one that says wrestling fans are too dim to understand large and complex tournaments, you know, like they have in nearly every other sport.

This might sound like hyperbole, but it's not....outside of the Best Friends not getting a tag title run, because that is never going to be topped to me, as the most disappointed I've been in AEW.  That's a barebones insult of a bracket with a brutally telegraphed ending.  Hell, I would've preferred an obvious FTR/BCC final despite being semi tired of Mox.

  2. I think this was about as "wholesome" as a Dark Side episode could be.  There was no negative comments on his character, nothing about him as a father that was negative.  He was just a great human being in a sawmill of a business.  I watched him as a kid and it didn't really register so much, but seeing this, i retroactively remember so much of his stuff.

Most of CMLL's current stuff is behind a paywall.  The easiest way to catch up on things would be to go back to the 2023 Gran Prix, and watch the Friday shows from there. To do that you may need to find a fan of the Cubs, and see if they have any of that saved anywhere in a publicly accessible shared drive. *Nudgenudgewinkwink*

    A quick (very quick) primer...

Mistico is the top draw, and Volador Jr is the ace of the company. Both are tecnicos by default, but Volador will work rudo opposite Mistico or when needed.  Mascara Dorada 2, Soberano Jr, and Atlantis Jr are being positioned to be the cornerstones of the promotion in the near future.

Ultimo Guerrero is the former ace of the company that is starting to slow down a bit, but he is consistently positioned as the top rudo in the company. A lot of things revolve around him. His brother Gran Guerrero is nowhere near as good, but gets a huge push by proxy. Niebla Roja & Angel del Oro, the Chavez Bros, are the CMLL tag champs, and dominate that division. There are a ton of great workers in the upper midcard, like Stuka Jr, Templario, Valiente, Barbaro Cabernario, Titan, Neon, Futuro, Averno, Mephesto, Blue Panther's kids, Guerrero Maya Jr, Rey Cometa... these guys are the life blood of the promotion because they just get thrown out there to have matches.

Probably the biggest "angle" over the past couple years has been Rocky Romero periodically showing up to start shit and stir things up.  Awhile back he beat Volador for the NWA Middleweight Title, and then Volador took his hair.

Over the past year, CMLL has really out a focus on women... in fact they ran an all-women's show last night.  A lot of the veteran women are oft injured, so they've really been giving young girls an opportunity. Many are green as grass, but the level of work has stepped up quite a bit. Steph Vaquer is probably the cream of these new girls, but Jarochita and Lady Isis are pretty good too.  When Amapola and some of the veteran luchadors can and want to go, they can have some real good matches.

    Wow!

I honestly cannot thank you enough for this post, and look forward to diving in.

Those are very much AEW problems.

Yeah, I don't think so.  My feelings on Punk are well known and not worth rehashing, but he was a malcontent and miserable prick and Miro seemingly doesn't want anything to do with what creative wants to do with him.  2 people are not indicative of an "AEW problem"

  5. Being there to witness this live with my daughter, which it was her very first live wrestling experience was surreal.  I honestly didn't think anything would top seeing Kingston/Akiyama live on Zero Hour before Full Gear 2022, but I can confidently say that seeing Sting's send-off live with my kiddo and two of my best friends in the world is hands down the best live wrestling experience I've ever had in my life.

  6. Since we're throwing out recommendations, I am criminally unfamiliar with CMLL as whole.  I wouldn't even know where to start with getting myself semi up to speed, is there is a good place to dive in? specific people to check out.  I've seen a few names thrown in here with some timeframes, but i would appreciate any and all "hand holding" in regards to getting at least a small working knowledge.

  7. I look at Sasha the same way I look at the Youg bucks(up until this heel run).  I enjoy her matches, but outside of it, she doesn't really do anything for me one way or other.  That being said, I'm definitely excited to see her go up against Hayter/Rosa/Stalander/Riho/Shida/Purazzo/Abadon/Hart/Skye Blue.  I think her matching up with almost anyone in AEW's women division is exciting.  Hayter v Banks though, that's where my top tier interest is.

How far away is Hayter from returning?  I feel like she's been out a long time.  Same with Britt Baker

  8. As much as I love the Christian stuff(though I'm beginning to agree with taking the belt off of him), I think it could go forward without Luchasaurus involved.  Christian, Nick and Mama Wayne are fine on their own.

  9.   Visiting a close friend in NC for the weekend and we got to talking about wrestling (he isn't a huge fan).  Long story short, him, my daughter, his girlfriend and myself will all be attending AEW Revolution.  It will be my daughters first wrestling show ever and she'll be getting to see Sting's final match.  She's so excited.

Forgot he was in that. He was in The Dead Don't Die with the immortal line "Ghouls". (I still like the movie even if nobody else to a person that I know of does. Watch there actually be somebody on here. Nice for speaking up when it came out, haha.)

I definitely enjoyed The Dead Don't Die!

I am on this train of thought with you, for the most part. I think across the wrestling world we are at the all time peak of wrestlers skills, depending on what you like. The only major show that isn't filled with some highly skilled wrestlers (by design) is NXT and even that has some work horses. I'd argue that NXT does the best job of explaining why most matches are happening out of everything on TV.

I've really come around on this new iteration of NXT and for just that reason.  They put together quality storylines lately and I really, really enjoy how much importance and emphasis they have around the NXT belt.  I might be in the minority here, but it "feels" just so important in the grand scheme of their promotion, almost as much, if not moreso than the AEW title/Universal Title/Seth Rollins title.  I'm not saying it is more important than those titles, but in relation to the promotion it's in, it definitely feels like it has the most weight.

I could not give less of a shit about how the casual fan feels about that.

This isn't a shot at you odessasteps. I just cannot understand why I, as a wrestling fan, have to tie my fandom to the financial interests of the promotion I choose to watch.

I watch wrestling for my own enjoyment. That's literally the only reason. I would like the promotions I like to be successful and be able to continue to produce wrestling that I like so that I can watch it, but that's it.

I was happy to see Jun Akiyama on my tv wrestling Bryan Danielson on a random Saturday night, and that's as far as I go with it.

This might be my favorite post in my entire time on DVD.

I thought the losing streak might be leading to Sami Zayn beating Gunther for the Intercontinental Championship at WrestleMania XL.

I know it might be a bit of a "repeat", but I really think Gunther should lose to a debuting Ilja Dragunov.  Sort of keep him as the only person who truly has Gunther/Walters number in NXT/WWE
