  1. The creative teams for the three announced "Core" books are all different flavours of good, even if I'm concerned about Jed McKay overreaching with how many big titles he's running right now. Also the titles for the teased second wave are all interesting, so that's something.

Cyclops looks like teen Cyclops again which is...curious. Wondering if that's an artistic choice or if something's going to happen.

Apparently part of the bit is that they're going to be recovering from the end of the Krakoan Era, with no centralized location or team, which is part of why there's three X-Men teams...they're all grouping independently of one another. I imagine it's tough to speak to all that much without spoiling the heck out of what they're currently doing, but they've definitely got my curiousity.

If nothing else, getting Gail Simone back on a monthly book is a huge win.

you guys were no help at all, and my impulses won out over my self control. that said, i did score quite a good deal to get 75% of these figures. the rest were all at or near market value, so i still spent more than i should have, but what can you do .....

Not to make it worse or rub salt in it, but AoA Blink also got a release in an earlier wave. Unless something massive changed, she was pretty available at below retail though.

  3. There's an alternate universe where Hickman was allowed to do the whole Krakoan saga as one book, in the same kind of form and feel as HoX/PoX. I think that probably would have rocked.

But at the same time, I wouldn't have got Al Ewing or Kieron Gillen's stuff in there so it all works out in the end.

Mark Waid is leaving Shazam to work with Scott Snyder. I wonder if it's to help with building the new DC universe?

Since it hasn't been mentioned here, it turned out Waid was actually leaving Shazam to write the summer event Absolute Power.

    All of it.

    Every issue.

    Every tie-in.

    Everything.

22 issues in total over like 3-4 months.

    Absolute madness.

Dan Mora is drawing the main series too, being another guy with real absurd levels and quality of output. Should be a hoot.

  5. Kieron Gillen's next ongoing was announced this week.

The Power Fantasy with Caspar Wijngaard who he did the excellent Peter Cannon: Thunderbolt with.

The hook is that there's six superhumans in the world who all have Dr. Manhattan level world destroying powers and the world's continued existence relying on them never coming into conflict.

Sounds very cool. Very curious where he goes with that concept.

Got the first 2 volumes of Tom Taylor's Nightwing run and this has been the most dun I've had rwading Nightwing since Dixon/McDaniel.

It's such a breezy and fun read and yeah, it has those moments where I get a little misty-eyed.

I'll wait for Vol 3 in softcover which, given DCs ether induced turnaround (come... back... here... you... rab... bit) will be sometime around Xmas

The Fear State collection also slots between either 1 and 2 or 2 and 3 and is worth reading too.

  7. The response to the EC revival has been real interesting. A big takeaway that I think tracks is that it's hard to really be EC now. EC was doing boundary pushing genre fiction for its time. If a revival's ambition ends at being a nostalgia act doing retro style horror and crime books, it'll be fine but sort of underwhelming.

oh man, total other boat for me. i was hooked with the original HOX/POX miniseries and haven't even considered jumping off. i am sad to see this era close, it's the most i enjoyed the X books sincd Morrison.

i assume it helps that i read by the storyline, instead of weekly/monthly as the books come out. and like @Craig, i didn't pay......much.

It's funny because I was a bit of both. I adored HoX/PoX and while I like a lot of the stuff following it, there was too much chaff to wheat ratio for me. But Inferno got me back in and the Gillen/Ewing books have been my fave X-Men stuff since...well, the last time Gillen was on it.

Really hoping they have something interesting in the works to follow because trying to go backwards to evoking something like Claremont isn't super likely to land for me right now.

Given Waid and Snyder are the names in play, I'm real interested in the latest attempt at an Ultimate DC Universe.

On a different note, I just skimmed next week's Batman and nearly cackled at the canon explanation for the Three Jokers bit now that the Johns book is being moved firmly out of canon. It's deeply, deeply stupid in a very funny way that I think is gonna make some people very mad.

  10. I appreciate that DC has limited the number of relaunches the last few years, although with Superman,Wonder Woman, and Flash having done new number ones recently and some scuttlebutt that Batman might do the same after #150 I do wonder if they're going to a more Marvel approach for stuff that isn't Action and Detective.

It's a bit of a tricky balance and I can see the argument both ways, honestly.

Hey, haven't seen you in a while. You well?

Heard good stuff about Ram V on Detective Comics. Will have to give it a go as I dropped Chip Zdarsky's Batman.

I'm good thanks! Just did basically all my internet from a phone for some years and got out of the forum habit due to optimization. But then had a hankering of nostalgia after seeing the Dean tribute show announced and since I have a proper desktop setup again, figured I'd try to get back into the vibe.

Zdarsky's Batman is fun and well drawn enough for me to keep up with, but only on DC Infinite where I'm not paying a monthly. Absolutely braindead action comics, the latest creator to take a vibrant rich Morrison idea and absolutely beat all the charm and nuance out of it to deliver something pretty flavourless (following the absolutely agonizing Multiversity/Final Crisis riffs in JL Incarnate by Williamson). Total empty calories and that's fine enough but it's not like...good.

  12. Got around to reading Ultimate Spider-man #1 and Rise of the Powers of X #1 today and man, what a great one two punch.

The Ultimate Universe revival and the Gillen/Ewing parts of the X-books especially have been so good. Really not sure how the post-Krakoa age is going to have a hope of living up to this stuff.

Also, I don't know why it always shocks me how good Hickman is at getting me in the emotions because his big runs all have it, but he's such a big ideas guy that it's easy to forget how good he is at the character stuff. Given the setup and the fact that it's the Hickman book, seems like USM will be where the main threads of the new universe are propelled, but it's an interesting enough start that I'm real curious about the other books as well, especially the Momoko X-Men.

I think the best advice for reading DC books in 2024 is follow a writer/creative team and ignore everything else. Read Waid’s books, read Josh Williamson’s books, read Tom Taylor’s books, etc.

Honestly, I think this is the best advice for modern US comics in general.

Also, Ram V is definitely one who should be getting that following. His run on Detective Comics has been great.

Hopefully, it means Giant Size Man Thing returns.

I keep an extremely beat up copy of Giant Sized Man Thing #4 on the wall in my home office, no bag and board or anything, just because it never stops being funny to me.

Hey, @The Unholy Dragon. Long time no see. How are you? Who's EVS?

    I'm good thanks!

I got out of habit checking the forum around the time I got into the habit of working seven days a week so oops.

Anyway, apparently Van Sciver just posted a pic of Johns with podcast hype to stir shit up as he is truly garbage.

Johns' path to being the 2000s John Byrne but only a writer returns to a slow boil.

  16. So DC announced today they're leaving Diamond.

This is huge with massive repercussions and a lot of unanswered questions.

One big issue is shipping. It's been noted that Lunar/UCS have pricier shipping than Diamond. The UK/Europe are especially hosed though...neither distributor has plans to set up local shipping hubs, so the cost of comics+shipping is going to exceed cover price, doubling at least the cost of any DC Comics sold there.

Retaliation is also going to be a thing. On a small scale, I wonder if DST stops producing DC merch. Or further, if Diamond stops distributing toys and merch featuring DC Characters at all.

Moreover, will Diamond cancel its contracts with Midtown and DCBS to retaliate for the loss of DC income and likewise to encourage shops to purchase heavier amounts of Marvel/Image/Dark Horse/Etc. since the two biggest can't anymore.

On top of all that, Bleeding Cool is reporting that this is part of a AT&T purchase shakeup with the intent to phase out physical copy single issue comics in favour of digital serialization and a focus on graphic novels moving forward.

Lots of aspects to this one.

  17. Rebirth Red Hood is shockingly good, honestly.

The whole Ric Grayson thing is weird to me because I like a lot of the ideas driving it, but don't know how I feel about what I've seen of the execution. Planning to read from the start through the Gray Son arc this week to judge for myself.

You know I'm a massive Batman fan and love Batman: The Animated Series. I bought this last week...

    batman-the-animated-series-batman-artfx-

Batman from Batman: The Animated Series statue by ArtFX+/Kotobukiya. The figure comes with three different cowl expressions, four different mouth reactions and three different right hands, this one with the trusty Batarang. The statue stands on the iconic Bat symbol. The Bat symbol stores the different parts. I’m really pleased with this purchase.

What's the size like on that? I've been staring at it at work for months.

Also the JL Batman figure is a few years old but was an exclusive for DC Nation members and thus functionally US only. Thankfully it's finally getting an international release.
