  1. Been thinking about this a lot recently. Realize that we have lived at the cusp between an entire sea change in technology. We're part of a generation that will remember and have used dial phones, non-HD television, dial-up Internet -- hell, didn't have the Internet, all forms of analog media that may or may not survive. PRINT MEDIA has almost "gone away". We've lived through a change in milleniums and all that entails. It's insane.

  2. Someone coined the term "xennial" as a microgeneration on the border of Gen X and Millenials, and characterized them as people who remember the days before modern technology but were still nimble enough to adapt to it.

  5. Seeing Wrestling fans complaining that a show is only streaming in 720p is quite common if you’re friends with enough youngsters. You can try to tell them that we used to watch on 6th generation VHS tapes that had been converted from PAL to NTSC and back, but you might as well be speaking Flemish.

  7. I see Attitude Era fans in their late 30s now, who do really enjoy good wrestling, but who will sill say they don't watch half of AEW because it's "just good matches." Motherfucker, do you know how many people had to die to track down good matches in 1998?! The scummy people we had to deal with!!!

  11. Jesus... money orders... One thing I'm very proud of is I was the exact last generation of metal tape traders. While the rest of you were dubbing puro tapes I was trading black and death metal stuff with people that already had it. Sometimes I'd just ship a pack of tapes out to someone and they'd do the dirty work because I started out with like nothing. Instead of meeting people through Penbangers or the want ads in Metal Maniacs or whatever though, it was via the Internet through people on message boards. I got all kinds of crazy shit and kept it all. My garage and the guest room are full of totes with old cassettes, zines, CDs and CDRs, VHS and DVDs, shirts. After digital got to the point to where I can get anything online, I decided to just get all the coolest shit on vinyl and the collection is practically swollen. It's to the point where I started buying tapes again because 1. they came back just like vinyl did (for some reason), and 2. I can't possibly afford EVERYTHING on vinyl. But I do have some neat tape cases from Goodwill! So there they go.

  12. Craziest Elvis impersonator story is Orion, a post-death Elvis impersonator who performed in a bedazzled Lone Ranger mask and alluded to being the real Elvis, who faked his death. So just to get this straight, Elvis faked his death, and then went right back into the same industry and barely tried to hide who he was.

  14. Yeah, that's why I traded the CD away. I tried getting into Helmet again via Spotify a couple years ago and still couldn't dig it. And listening to Smashing Pumpkins now feels kinda lame so I don't listen to them anymore, but thankfully Silversun Pickups came along to have some of that Pumpkins sound and also sound really unique. They'll probably be the band I go to see over and over again in my life. Them and Tegan and Sara. It's like wrestling. I used to be into some really dumb shit when I was younger because my brain was dumb and didn't know any better. It would be weird to go back and tell 14 to 16 year old me that, yeah, you're going to think Tommy Dreamer is the best shit ever, but here's what's going to happen - ECW is going to suck, you're going to discover Misawa vs Kawada and then find all the cool shit Vader has been doing and along the way you're going to discover some other really awesome Japanese dudes, then all wrestling is going to get really bad for awhile, all of your favorites are going to die, and the favorites that are alive won't last long or are going to despise wrestling, you'll cry over two women named Bailey and Sasha and you'll get teary eyed again for women wrestlers in a Wrestlemania, and then a dude from the message board you're going to start posting on in a couple years will wind up running WWE's main competitor and it will be pretty cool, and you'll think two women named Giulia and Hayter are the two coolest wrestlers on the planet.

  15. Meltzer mentioned the other day how it was thought that Bryan would work a way lighter schedule than what he does now, but then brought up how that doesn't make a lot of sense because Bryan already works an incredibly light schedule. The other thought was that maybe Birdy said to her dad that she doesn't want to see him hurt all the time and Bryan has been injured a lot lately. So I don't know. On the one hand I kinda buy Bryan wrapping things up except for maybe one run a year when his kids are in school and don't have much going on. Separately, but related, if you're Darby, man, look at Danielson. If you tone down the insanity just a little bit you'll be around longer than Bryan. People really like watching you and not a single person wants to see you get crippled in the ring.

  16. Van Dam has to slow down a bit, but Dory takes almost all of the RVD spots and there’s very little down time. They get too ambitious and RVD goes for a dive where Dory doesn’t catch him, but for what it is it’s not bad. I had to turn the sound down because of Alfonso, but it’s 90s RVD, so I guess that goes without saying.

  18. Here are my thoughts from a fun night at Ring of Honor and AEW in Cleveland: "Tell us that story again, Grandpa Darby!" "One day, I was skateboarding to the ring, and I was attacked by a DINOSAUR~!" "Ooooohhhh....." Here's me talking to my daughter (age 20): (Dark Order shows up) "They're a happy cult." (Righteous shows up) "Are these guys another cult?" "Yeah, but they wear white." Speaking of cult leaders, "Keith Lee saying 'run' was a tribute to Swamp Guy." Her thoughts at the end of the night: "I'm not emotionally invested in pro wrestling, so I like the fact that the AEW matches aren't so long. The WWE matches just go on forever." My three biggest impressions of the night: 1. Cleveland is getting into AEW. For the last year's Dynamite, there were a lot of random wrestling shirts (Savage, Piper. DX). This year, there were a lot of AEW shirts, including guys who weren't scheduled to be there (Omega, MJF, Cole, Orange). 2. Collision (and AEW) will be just fine without Punk. It's cool in a way that Collision had one "star of the show" who is now gone, so everyone else can gun for that spot. Starks, Keith Lee, FTR came right out and said they want the spot. But think of the other candidates: Andrade (looked at a monitor), Swerve (wasn't even there), Jay White (getting over as an inanimate object). 3. Twenty years ago, I announced for Ring of Honor in community college gyms and county fairgrounds. Last night, I watched ROH in the home of the Cleveland Cavaliers. That really meant a lot to me. ROH didn't go away; it exists as part of the No. 2 promotion in the country. Being a part of its early days feels even better than it does for Bleacher Report.

  19. had the same feeling watching ECW. those WWE Network episodes just feel wrong. the tape needs to be just as gritty as the angles and action. hiding in plain sight. honestly, it might be genius. who is going to accuse a professional impersonator of being the real deal?

  22. The best lines from elsewhere to finally round off the A-Rodge Discount-Double Achilles Tear 1) Aaron Rodgers took four snaps in the game yesterday. Five if you count the Achilles tendon. 2) Someone else joked that the Jets are the only franchise to ever hire a hall-of-fame level head coach and never have him be the head coach for a single game, and to sign a Hall of Fame Level QB, and not have him complete a single pass (Belichick and Rodgers) 3) Speaking of Belichick, the only way this could have been worse is if Rodgers had pulled a Belichick and wrote "I resign as QB of the NYJ" on a napkin and handed it in before week 1.

  23. 1000% this. NJPWWorld is getting an update soon, but people would constantly complain about video resolution. I'm sitting here going "Are you kidding me?! Watching puroresu in low-res is almost the only way it feels right to me. I started off on bootleg VHS tapes. That's my pro-wrestling equivalent of a cozy blanket." There's a part of me that still can't believe it's possible to watch stuff like New Japan in high-res. It still feels like I shouldn't have access to it, if that makes any sense. There's that "generational sea change" concept again.

  24. Oh yeah, my entire build is focused on only 2 things: Making my ship as good as possible while keeping my speed fast, and making scanning and resource gathering as easy as possible. Geology, Zoology, and Botany are fun skills for that sort of build. As is surveying really, which was weirdly the first thing I maxed. Now most of my skills for gathering info are going into Astrophysics and Scanning. Of course, that is being delayed. Now that I can access level 4 science perks, Aneutronic Fusion is the truth. I got to Piloting 4 today and bought a 50,000 credit rank C reactor. My reactor power is now high enough I can keep 12 in engines and shields and still move around 6 points into my weaponry or Grav. The science tree is incredible for my character, and I haven’t done nearly enough doing research stuff. Or even made an outpost yet. Need to look into the proper means to do that stuff now. And also make up my mind on my ship weaponry direction. EM seems obvious, but need to look at other plays.

  25. i have engaged in plenty of tape trading, and continue to fly the jolly roger in regards to many of the old shows that may or may not ever be re-released. It still takes me aback when i see complaints like what you're referring, because i think in 3 terms when it comes to quality: 1) really good. like brand new stuff. 720? 1080? 4K? i don't care. they're all the same to me. 2) watchable. basically anything and everything else. digital file ripped from a 4th gen VHS? good enough. a copy where somebody flipped channels and you get a few minutes of Friends instead of the middle of a Godfather match? i'm probably fine with that. 3) not worth my time. most of the 90s fancams would be a good example- if you can't hold a camera steady, i ain't got time for you.

  30. Danielson loves to put himself in creative boxes so he can figure his way out. Working around physical limitations as he ages sounds like the kind of challenge he’d love, so I have a hard time believing it’ll be anything more than a Foley retirement where you can expect to see him work somewhere a few times a year.

  31. It's kind of a tossup. When you think about it the first one IS darker, and it's almost like the second one is funnier but has to be more gruesome to make its point but also top the first. And O'Herlihy's reactions are perfect. (It just struck me that I've only seen him in exactly three movies -- the two Robos and Halloween III -- and he seems like one of those guys I should have seen as a character actor in a thousand.) The ending is such a downer that's it no wonder they decided "well, we can't do this again, let's go get that action figure money". Man I just remembered, didn't they call Barkin "a beaten-up Jayne Mansfield" in Fear and Loathing or something? Jeez. Imagine being her and reading that script, thinking about how incredible the movie is gonna be, but realizing that's the shit you're gonna have to swallow. EDIT: And meanwhile, Gary Busey's crazy ass who had a more publicly bad career trajectory gets to improv on a movie written from a book and it stays in

  32. Nothing can turn me off a show faster than Nia Jax, maybe one of the worst wrestlers to ever grace a major promotion and a self-centred moron of the highest degree. It’s the ‘E so expectations are only so high but that’s still so disappointing to see

  34. Was not expecting Drew McIntyre and Xavier Woods to have a high-end banger this week. But, yep, really good match between those two. I am not a fan of Drew at all. Never have been. Never will be. I think the dude is largely a snooze and I've never understood why people like him/his constant upper-level spot/etc. But, yeah, he's had some really good matches and I should just come around to him. When Xavier Woods first appeared in my life in NXT all of those years ago, I thought he may have been the single worst wrestler I had seen this century on a televised wrestling show. Everything about him was awful to me -- poor execution with a really cloying personality that felt completely inauthentic. But for the past I don't know how many years, I've become such a fanboy for him. He's become an all-time great babyface. While he definitely excels in tag matches, he's also had some really great singles matches. This wasn't nearly on par with the Gable/Gunther classic from last week(*) or the KO/Gunther classic from earlier this year. But a really go showing and respectable choice for a Match of the Week in a normal week. (*) Man, we might all need to revisit that match. I loved loved loved it last week. But a lot of wrestlers are bugging out about it. I know to take the Busted Open Radio guys with a grain of salt but Mark Henry raved about that match to this insane degree and I don't want to pay him any more of an air bill. That really feels like it could be one of the best Raw matches ever once it settles in a bit more?

  39. Between The Artist Formerly Known as Drago, Aero Star, Angelico, Fenix, and Penta, Collision was a real Lucha Underground Reunion. Oh yay Jade is back and it'll probably be the same tired-ass act we saw for over a year. Couldn't even get Stat up for her finish. Show muscles, not go muscles. I FFWD'd through Samoa Joe main events two nights in a row. Why is this? Am I just bored by the sameness of his style? Sometimes AEW's "yes the outcome is a foregone conclusion but it'll be a good match!" style just bores me, maybe. BUT despite all that, I loved Mox vs Andretti. So maybe I just find Joe to be so very one note. Roderick Strong's whole act is GREAT. Loved him yelling at the Kingdom to get his neckbrace as soon as the match ended. I unsubbed ROH so I didn't know Stu fully joined The Righteous. That's cool but they couldn't throw a few bucks to Bateman? Why? Looking forward to seeing Vinnie's bobo Rob Zombie/Midsommar act on my TV.

  42. I’m not upset about it. Bryans run in WWE isn’t just remarkable because of all the awesome matches he had. He certainly had a fuckton of them over a long string period of time (even with the time out). We knew he could even in an unwelcoming environment. The run in the E is more remarkable because he was never supposed to be there. ANY success he could muster would have been an overachievement. That he basically took the company top spot by force of the will of the people is practically cosmic in its elevation. Especially because I watched my ROH guy get murdered week after week to the tune of “Wild and Young” on the original NXT. When he lost to Khali and his fucking HAND CHOP? I thought it was over. I admit that in hindsight I kind of respect the troll move of having MIZ be his senior (even when Punk was right there). But MIZ did put Bryan over strong and helped the comeback after the baffling firing. Am I remembering correctly that the week after Bryan got fired. RAW faded to black with the crowd chanting his name? But it be can really seen in contrast of what it looks like when the company is behind you like say with… Ultimate Warrior. To put that much into a character build and still kinda fail. Versus putting any and all effort into suppression and blowing up with that.. much.. success. Fucking really? But he really kinda beat them in spite of it all. And he got to do all that while having years worth of great matches.

  43. Bobby Fish was young once? That doesn't seem credible. 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 The same was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men. 5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. Also Bobby Fish was there.

  45. Robocop 2 is on right now. 1. I could not watch the scene where the new Robocop pulls its face off. That's the first time I've actively turned away from a movie in I don't know how long, maybe ever. I mean, I just shrugged off the eyeball staking in Zombie on TV the other day but that one was just too much. 2. Didn't notice this before but the guy from the first one who holds up the liquor store is the same dude that helps rob the gun store in this one. 3. If you read that New Yorker article about Elon Musk/Amazon/Space-X where they said Space-X is entirely responsible for functioning Internet in the Ukraine and the US government is billions in debt to him, it is clear that he is pretty much the Old Man from OCP now. If the Old Man was an autistic thrillseeker who's willing to crash cars that he's driving for kicks, that is.
