  1. We just got out of the WWE Sunday Slammer Road To WrestleMania show in Denver tonight. Holy shit, it was great. The place was basically sold out and Denver lived up to its reputation as a hot wrestling town. We were on fire all night. My nephew and his pals had an amazing time and so did I. And, I had looked up what matches were being done on this tour and was expecting the same card. They gave us a different show than the rest of the tour. From memory the card was: 1. Bianca BelAir beat Chelsea Green 2. The Brawling Brutes beat Imperium 3. Bronson Reed beat Johnny Gargano 4. Charlotte Flair beat Liv Morgan and Sonya Deville 5. Asuka and Mia Yim beat Damage Control 6. Miz TV with Denver's own Bobby Lashley led to a three way match where Austin Theory beat Lashley and Miz when Theory pinned Miz. 7. Cody Rhodes, Ricochet, and Strowman beat the Usos and Solo Sikoa. The crowd went NUTS for Lashley. It was awesome. Oh, and they turned down the crowd lights for the Main Event. It looked great.

  2. Just because someone else is willing to take less money for a job that is worth more money does not mean that anyone else is obligated to take less money. The Ravens are well within their rights to say no, but he's well within his rights to tell them to fuck off. It would be one thing if the Ravens spent the money saved on his rookie contact to sign a bunch of great talent around him, but he's been playing with a pu pu platter of skill position talent his entire career. One again, if the Jets were smart they'd stop negotiating with Green Bay and trade for Lamar. It will actually be cheaper.

  4. When the Mox-Punk squash happened, which I saw live in Cleveland, I loved it because fuck Punk, but I even said at the time it didn't make any sense. It makes even less sense in retrospect. You could have just waited and did the match at the PPV if Punk wasn't cleared. Unless "Mox wouldn't job" means he wouldn't lose the interim title unless he won the real title first. In which case, fuck Mox a little bit, but also still fuck Punk. It's like fuck Bret for not jobbing to Shawn but also Shawn was a prick so fuck him too. Anyway, fuck Punk. Him calling out Hangman was the catalyst for all of this. I think Tony was kind of backed into a corner though. You can't really reprimand Punk when you have a crown in his hometown three weeks later expecting him to win the belt. Really, if you still want to do Rocky III at this point. Have Punk lose the PPV match, and build to a rematch after that, with Mox or MJF. In retrospect, you shouldn't've put the belt on Punk in the first place. Have MJF beat Hangman, either at All Out or sometime after Forbidden Door, and build to Punk challenging MJF down the line. Again, the issue is wanting Punk to have a big win in his hometown, especially after losing to MJF in Chicago earlier in the year. Fuck Punk is my point. Can't forget that. I will add that I also have never seen any of the Rocky films, except for the last hour of Rocky V on cable once. I'm a pretty big film nerd but some things you just don't get around to. However, I am six years younger than Punk, so that's my excuse.

  5. How does trying to get paid what you're worth make you an ass? If you want more money at work are you an ass? If they don't think he's worth the money they can trade him, but it doesn't look like they want to do that either. So, if anyone is being an ass it is the Ravens who want him to play for them, but aren't willing to pay the cost to keep him. They could have solved this by paying him, but they didn't. Now they burned the bridge to their franchise quarterback, and he doesn't want to play for them any more. Once again, whether they like it or not, the price of franchise quarterbacks has gone up. It's not going back down, the longer you wait, the more it is going to cost. If your quarterback is good enough to keep, you have to pay him more than the last guy. Russell Wilson, Kyler Murray, and Deshaun Watson set the floor, and no one in their right mind thinks any of them are better than Lamar Jackson. If you want him, you have to pay for him. Why would he accept anything less? Joe Burrow is coming up next, and he's going to be negotiating against the cheapest franchise in the league. That might be even more of a shit show.

  6. Having Menard commentate on Elevation (and Jericho occasionally on Rampage) helps ME feel like the JAS is still connected to other stuff, even when Jericho is feuding with only Starks and Andretti for three months, but I realize that's not exactly the experience the wide swath of the audience is getting.

  8. Dude, that I'm From Hollywood special messed with my mind when I first saw it. I only knew of him from Taxi and I sat at the kitchen table completely glued to the TV. It really showed me something I never knew Kaufman did and it's funny reading/hearing bits and pieces about it over the years. Dude was just ahead of his time and knowing it's on Youtube means I'll need to find the time to watch it.

  10. Tonight we've got... Luther/Angelico/SERP vs Page/Hardy Kassidy Athena vs Tootie Lynn Diamante vs Riho Big Bill and Lee up against Zack Clayton and his unfortunate partner, the current LLL (Lucha Libre & Laughs) Heavyweight Champion. Nyla and Marina killing people, Nese and Davari giving people too much offense, Willow probably giving "Maggie Lee" just enough offense,

  14. People went gaga over the idea of Punk vs the Elite based on all of this stuff, but it's pretty clear at this point that if he's going to come back, the only possible thing that would work and have value is having him be a much better version of Chris Jericho working younger guys in three month programs. Punk vs Starks. Punk vs Hobbs. Punk vs Wardlow. Punk vs Garcia. Punk vs Acclaimed. Punk vs Moriarty, etc. A lot of those guys (but not all, just a subsection) are the ones that still say nice things about him, in the margins, and I think it'd make Punk happiest and it'd help the company the most. He's apparently alienated every main eventer but maybe Danielson and MJF. Fine. Let him work the kids. Win-win, at least until he gets pissy that he's a bigger star than everyone and working the mid-card, but if he really wants to come back, that's the way in.

Most of the Mid South I've seen has been in one of two contexts: 1) Cherry picking matches/angles of various guys who came through over the years (Terry, Flair, Hogan, etc) 2) I was a very weird little kid, and was obsessed with Andy Kaufman (still am) so I watched I'm From Hollywood on Comedy Central probably hundreds of times

  29. So, my mom has the most interesting taste in movies. She fucking LOVES the whole Rocky series and that's largely why I'm such a fan of those movies because I watched them so much as a kid. But now that she's in a nursing home she can't really watch movies that much. And she has no interest in ever leaving her room to talk to other people there so she just watches whatever is on TV. Yesterday when I go to visit her, she goes, "do you know what movies I just watched that I loved? John Wick." 1, 2, and 3 must have been on TNT or TBS or something and she watched all of them and loved them. I was shocked. Normally all she watches is crap like My 600 Pound Life or whatever it's called. My daughter then asks what John Wick is and I explain the basic plot details and she goes, "can we watch it?" I hemmed and hawed a little bit because of how violent it is and my daughter is going to turn 13 in a month, but just the day prior we watched the first Scream (which still fucking rules, "my mom and dad are gonna be so mad at me!") and so I figured, sure. I did preface it by saying that this is not realistic and it's about as fantastical as the MCU movies. That first John Wick is still awesome. My daughter wound up liking it a lot too except she thought the beagle, Daisy, was cuter than the dog he takes at the end, but that dog at the end is still adorable. I doubt I'll be able to catch John Wick 4 in the theater, but this was just such a weird turn of events for my mom to tell me how much she loves those movies to then watching the first one with my older daughter.

  34. Meltzer continued digging himself deeper in a hole with this morning's WOR. I sat there listening to this guy say he wished he didn't make that post on his message board or that he wished he told the full story and now a bunch of people are mad at him and blah blah blah. YA THINK?!? Maybe, oh, I don't know, either not post something making it sound like you're a know it all or if you do really have to post something on your message board, say the whole thing. This is just Meltzer realizing the mess he created after the fact and trying to dig himself out when he just keeps getting deeper. Just stop digging man. People joke about taking TK's keyboard away. Someone take Meltzer's keyboard away.

  36. I can’t give a fuck about Hobbs as long as all the QTV garbage is involved. Sorry, I totally tuned out. King and Hager was perfectly fine meatslapping but god Hager is so dull. Give me Hobbs-King for 20 without any ringside nonsense. Taya is a large woman. Leila Gray is definitely better than when she first showed up, but she’s still not good. Jade looked cool, I’ll give her that. Juice Robinson makes me laugh trying to be a tough guy. I’m looking forward to him and Ricky wrestling though. Dynamite looks fucking awesome! Not a bad match on the card. Main event was fun, I’m on Team “Kingdom are great” and they are excellent upper-midcard heels who can give you an excellent old-school tag team match and then take a clean pin. Gonna have to disagree with Max about the Maria photo spread though..

  37. Been watching movies again. Am I going back to reviewing them? Fuck no. I still have some weird, self-inflicted mental damage on myself now, where if it approaches midnight and I haven't finished watching something, I feel guilty about it. I don't know how long that'll take to deprogram, but I'm definitely not going back to it. Top Gun: Maverick - I'm of two minds about this. There is some BEAUTIFUL stuff in this movie, and on some level I wish technical acumen were appreciated more. I suppose things like Avatar or Dune getting nominated for Best Picture when they're merely very, very good instead of great are examples of that happening. So a part of me is not entirely annoyed this got a nomination. Everything else that's *not* a 'filmmaking craft' detail? Uh, no, no, no, a thousand times no. Also, I have a question for all the red-blooded, patriotic, gung-ho, hyper-masculine, gun-toting, truck-driving, military-loving Muricans out there, and I do mean this in as much seriousness as I can muster: why do all y'all suck SO MUCH DICK for our armed forces when you're so certain sucking dick is a thoroughly unmasculine enterprise? Because most of this movie an extended wank session. I like the pretty pictures and the stunts; everything else is boring, except maybe seeing Jon Hamm make quite possibly the stupidest face of his entire career at one point. Lost in Translation - I hadn't watched this since going on a date when it came out. It...has not aged that well. Again, some really beautiful stuff at play here, and the visuals make it worth seeing, but I think there's some merit to the calls (at the time) that the script is pretty racist. I can't see this movie getting made today with the way it goes. And no, Sofia, it doesn't matter if you don't think you're racist. When you visit Japan - or any country - more than a handful of times and then you *work with those people* for a month making a movie, and the biggest takeaway you have from that experience is not to humanize them but to make the same fucking joke 8 separate times in your movie, maybe you've got some implicit bias going on in your head, you bougie privileged fuck. It probably doesn't also help that I've learned what a douche Bill Murray has been some of the time, and it's increasingly hard to separate the person from the role when the role is that he's playing a more Bruce Willis-y version of himself. And in retrospect, I think I like him more in Rushmore, of all things (a Wes movie I love to hate) than I do in this. The gap between Master & Commander: Far Side of the World and just about EVERYTHING else that came out in 2003 is only growing (I suppose I should get around to watching Memories of Murder). Burning - Hm. Hmmmmmmm. I *should* like this more, but I think I don't just because Jung-so is not exactly a likable at all character. And I wonder where that emanates. I haven't read either the Faulkner or Murakami stories that feed into this, so I don't know where Lee's script begins and something else ends (or truly, if that even matters). But I have read Norwegian Wood, and that has a vaguely similar structure: the oafish, emotionally stunted clod who can't see the forest for the trees, the ineffably sad waif, the triangle completer who pulls them together and disrupts them in equal measure. So for Murakami's part, I wonder if this wasn't a sort of dry run for that book (I don't know if the book came out later or not...and I'm too fucking lazy to look it up!). But...man. It's got some Drive My Car-quality moments where the quiet and the still will just wreck you. The midpoint of the movie with the sunset is devastating. But what's it about? I don't know, and since it isn't trying to answer the question, it's hard to give it too much credit. It's almost too clever for its own good. Maybe someone who's read the stories can spoil them for me, assuming they're actually relevant at all. Candyman - The new one keeps popping up as available on Prime, but I wanted to watch the original, so I spent some digital credits and watched this for free. Plus, aside from maybe Madchen Amick, Virginia Madsen had the title of "Most Beautiful Woman in Hollywood" on fucking lockdown back then. Casting her as an angel in A Prairie Home Companion was some really obvious stuff from Robert Altman. I'd heard a little bit about how this develops, but I was pleasantly surprised by the depth and contours it had in regards to the social topics it was trying to tackle. I just wish it had been written a bit better and delved a bit deeper instead of veering entirely towards horror. But nevertheless, the extended metaphor of what happens to Madsen's character is hard to miss and easy to appreciate. Show up for Virginia, stay for the social commentary. Women Talking - This was merely rather good, not great. It's weird that a film like Men got utterly lambasted for bringing up some of the same topics as its central theme, while this won a Best Screenplay award for literally stating those themes out loud and as directly as humanly possible. Obviously there's a lot more going on in this movie beyond that, but it was hard to get that thought out of my head for the first 20 minutes or so, where Jessie Buckley and Rooney Mara and Claire Foy are just explicitly telling you what you're supposed to care about, like they're talking straight to the audience. I feel like if this had been a play, that tactic might have worked a little bit better, instead of making it drag a bit. But over time, more and more awful details start worming their way out to the surface, and those are handled quite a bit more artfully, especially given the quality of the cast. And it's got its moments of pulling you away from the terrible events and towards a reminder that there are reasons to keep living and to keep up the good fight. I see why it was nominated, but I also see why it was probably never a serious contender. A Few Good Men - Another rewatch that, I don't know, I thought there was something else going on with this movie than there was, but it's...eh, it's not really that good, it's just got the memorable stuff that goes for broke and otherwise it's quite flat. The early set-up for the plot feels badly done, since there's a pretty weird hole of sorts in there, and then it just sort of wends from here to there without really feeling like it's building to anything until Cruise's character pulls a bunch of stuff out of almost-thin-air. Plus, I didn't realize this was the movie that inflicted Aaron Sorkin on us for the last 30 years until I rewatched it. Yikes. And honestly, it's hard to tell Rob Reiner directed this, because instead of feeling anything like his other films, the movie just feels like "unsubtle Ron Howard". Then again...maybe that just describes Reiner's entire directorial career.

  42. The issue with Lamar is that he isn’t really angling to be paid fairly. He’s angling to get $1 more dollar than DeShaun Watson got. I mean, that’s a lot of money for a guy with one playoff win. Ravens seem willing to pay Lamar a lot more per year that the $32.4 he’ll get if he signs the franchise tag tender offer. That figure is the average of the top five salaries right now. Ravens also seem willing to guarantee a large chunk of it. So it seems reasonable Lamar would be signed if he was willing to become the third or fourth highest paid qb in the league, with maybe 2/3 or so of it guaranteed. I like Lamar but he has one career playoff win. He has enough potential to deserve to be paid like one of the top guys, but win something before you start asking to be paid like THE top guy.

  43. Aren’t you the same guy that crapped all over OBJ because he tore his ACL? Well what’s Lamar done the last two seasons besides get hurt, and then fake an injury to not play? God lord you’re easily the most hypocritical poster on this part of the site. How would the Jets giving up their next two first round picks for a guy like that benefit the team? Plus you’re stuck paying him at minimum $200 million guaranteed so when he flames out within the next 3 years you’re screwed. Please offer up more of your brilliance though, and once again explain how one injury prone guy is better than another that’s asking for a much smaller contract.

  44. I only skimmed through the first 4 or 5 pages so apologies if this was brought up already. But I am shocked not to see much talk on the rope color. It actively took away from my enjoyment of the show. It was distracting and off putting. It felt like a low rent flea market independent that tries to pretend like they are WWE from the 80s. It doesn't fit AEW's brand. It's like some try hard shit. I guess I'm probably the only one that feels this way. I'm starting to feel like man yelling at clouds. But I like traditional guard rails. I like simple black ropes. I'm not a fan of AEW WWE'ing their on screen presentation. I hate the look of WWE shows. Everything is so gaudy and over produced. And it seems like AEW is starting to do that. It's starting to turn me off. Maybe I'm alone in that. Maybe I'm gonna go full Drew here and the production look will be my Young Bucks lol. Yes, yes, Vikingo & Kenny was fucking awesome. I loved it. But I would have loved it way more if I wasn't so distracted by the new aesthetics. Thanks for reading my rant. Now get off my lawn.
