  1. The day after my dad died, I could barely bring myself to go out and interact with people in simple manners like grocery shopping. I can't imagine performing live in front of thousands of people while hundreds of thousands more watched on TV.

  3. I'm only through the first match due to some technical difficulties, but Jarrett was completely on last night. Some of it is that I was never an avid TNA watcher, that I never sought him out in AAA, or GFW, or whatever else, that I don't listen to his podcast, that when I do encounter him these days it's 1990 USWA, and I'm sure some of it is my frustration with certain parts of the current Elite-driven style. But he's very welcome on my screen right now. He stands out as contrast, is credible, works the crowd, is totally willing to be made a fool of. There are thirty people on the roster I'd like to see him work, from Evil Uno to Bryan Danielson to Dante Martin a Cassidy singles to Jon Moxley to one last battle with Dustin. It's another case like Danielson and RUSH where it feels like borrowed time too. I thought the match was put together well in general. Clever use of Sonjay. The unexpected FIP from Billy. Teases of Satnam. The endless cycling on the build to the payoff of Sonjay getting nailed at the end, etc. The Gunns straddle that line between people wanting to see them get beaten and beaten up and people just wanting to change the channel because it's embarrassing to watch them. That is a line no matter what people say and I do think they could be more effective while still not being an iota more likable. Austin was best when he was channeling Brian Christopher at his most annoying. Colten should be more disinterested and aloof. Nepo Babies are in the zeitgeist. They've lucked into a certain amount of timing but they haven't cracked the code yet. Garcia, for instance, can channel youthful petulance in the ring way better than they can, and that seems to be as far as possible from who he actually is. In out of character interviews, they just don't always come off as the sharpest knives, maybe, though I'm sure they're getting all the best coaching and advice possible.

  4. Jose with the chair! Yuta hits Jose! CLaudio with the Spear! FOR TWO! So Preston Vance and Jon Moxley need a best of seven series. WHO KNEW!? I assume RUSH/ Claudio is happening on the ROH PPV. That is going to rule. Who is the best in amongst Rush, MOX and Claudio? Currently, I would go with RUSH. Preston Vance was a surprising secret weapon in that match. MARK BRISCOE! JOSH WOODS! LUCHA BROTHERS! Mark bumps like a FREAK to get Josh Woods over. Woods looks GREAT in picture in picture! This match is GREAT! Woods goes Full Steiner! Briscoe with the Toprope Elbow for the win! I could see Mark Briscoe becoming the super over babyface to carry the company to the next level. MJF is a HEAT MACHINE! More Ass Boys! It's Jack Perry! It's Brian Cage! So I guess they are testing the waters for Samoa Joe versus Jack Perry? Or maybe Powerhouse Hobbs or some other monster? GREAT fucking Suplex by Cage in Picture in Picture. Cage is slaughtering Perry and the crowd is behind Perry's struggle to survive the Kanyon-inspired offense of Brian Cage! Perry makes the super babyface comeback to end up with a roll-up for the win. Brian Cage looked great in that match. Perry looked fine. Not Darby Allin great, but we'll see where they are going. And it's Christian! Maybe we are settling this first? Kip Sabian is so fun! I love how he doesn't realize that Hangman is going to destroy him. Sabian gets in wads of stuff! Even more during picture in picture! We come back and Hangman will now destroy Sabian. And he does! EVIL UNO! GOES STRAIGHT UP WITH MOX! That was great. I don't understand what is going on here but it is leading up to Hangman versus MOX so I'm going to ride this to the end. TONI STORM! RUBY SOHO! BRITT BAKER! Ah crap, it's a TRIPLE THREAT! Nice Dangerous Backdrop as they drive home the story of the match- which side is RUBY ON?!? Toni Storm lays it the fuck in during picture in picture. Man, Storm is just at a higher level. I love evil Saraya painting Storm's buttocks to BRAND Baker with the WRECKED EM! And Ruby steals the win! And everybody yells at her! That was good. I assume this is morphing into Stardom stables, but not as elaborate. Toni Storm is so fucking good. AEW RULES THE MOTHERFUCKING WORLD!

  5. I can't stop thinking about the spot in the last Joe/Darby match when Joe picked Darby up off his feet and threw him over the top. Not a hip lock, not a biel, just one human being internally saying "fuck this" and hurling another human being to the ground lack a sack of garbage. It was somehow the least pro wrestling thing ever and the MOST pro wrestling thing ever.

  8. I kind of think not having a "Wrestlemania" is a good thing. It doesn't tie you down to having to have one event be your biggest. If a program or storyline is organically getting hot in the lead up to any of your ppvs, you can pull the trigger instead of needing to hold it for a certain one. I definitely see the argument for having one, though. It is helpful to be able to point to one event as your Super Bowl or whatever. I just think not having that gives you a little more freedom, booking-wise.

  11. Dang. Hats off to Jarrett for going out there and working a fun match today. I didn't take a bathroom break this time. Dude gets a day off from me... But not from Caster! If I ever have to fight Mox I'm definitely gonna request a first blood match. It was refreshing to see so much classic chain wrestling in that tag match. (I hope I'm the first one to make that joke). Was that Jungle Boy's second best Cage match in AEW? Looks like he is gonna have another one soon. I was more stoked for Dark than for Dynamite this week (TAKESHITA vs BRONSON!!) but this show was an absolute blast. Uno's suit might have been THE highlight. Just fun match after fun match capped off by a VERY fun main event with CREATIVE use of the spray paint. I LOVE that the story is that we don't know where Ruby will end up. Like, as if her destination is yet to be determined.

  13. I think Mark could wind up becoming a pretty big star in AEW. He's so different than anyone else with his mannerisms and his look, and dude can definitely hold up his end of the work against anybody. It's such a shame it took Jay's death for this to happen.

  14. See, I never just did things just to do them. Come on, what am I gonna do? Just all of a sudden jump up and grind my feet on somebody's couch like it's something to do? Come on. I got a little more sense then that. [pause] Yeah, I remember grinding my feet on Eddie's couch.

  15. Mox and Kenny and Page worked openers and mains and in between. Why is MJF being held to a standard no other champion was? Heck, Punk was the top guy and was used to open hot many times and had promos in the middle. We all get it with your MJF hate-on and you're entitled to feel how you want as loudly as you want, but this is just silly. I also don't think there's much appetite for AEW to be a promotion with lengthy promo main events. But I guess Tony could try it more often if it would help you perceive MJF more credibly.

  16. With Mox now, he is getting to the point like a Dusty,Flair or Harley where they had a place that was able to be cut open with no problem. I keep seeing these pics of Harley from the late 70s, early 80s and his forehead over his left eye is perpetually discolored. Mox elevating Preston Vance would be great. RUSH is amazing and can seriously see putting the world title on him. Every time he gets into the ring it is great work. Kudos for AEW for putting the belts on talent and teams they started. Accliamed, the Gunns, MJF etc. Takes both some confidence and risk taking. It would be easy to put the belts on someone else who has a higher brand value. Now can these new folks carry the ball? MJF - not sure yet frankly.

  17. I'm of two minds on the MJF reign so far: has it been a slightly underwhelming start? Yes. But, do I think it was really important to go with a young, homegrown star on top after the last champ's public display of 'affection' to his co-workers and bosses? Also yes. I don't have access to any internal numbers, obviously, and I can't speak to any particular thought processes outside of baseless speculation, but it might be a situation where TK weighed what they might lose in eyeballs and asses, and decided it was worth it to reinvigorate and/or reassure the locker room. (As an aside, I feel there's a realistic possibility that Darby's brief TNT title reign and OC's AA title victory may have even served similar purposes) I think the intended vibe was supposed to be something like when Rock won the WWF title at the Survivor Series Deadly Game tournament in '98, where it's obvious you've got this young, future champ on your hands, and you're gonna roll with it even though the guy is probably in reality still 6 months to a year away from solidifying themselves. Now let's see if Danielson can do his best Foley; if anyone can, it's him.

  18. Tonight was a good show as usual. It wasn't spectacular, but it was good which is all one can ask for when watching. I missed most of the opening eight man but saw the ending with the Scissor spot. I guess it's officially the new WHAAAAATTTTTSSS UPPPPPPP headbutt. Props to Jeff for wrestling tonight. This golden globe thing has to have a payoff at some point. The texas tornado match was chaos. I think i'm getting tired of seeing Moxley bleed every week for no apparent reason. Preston on the other hand tapped a nice gusher. Claudio vs. RUSH should be a fun feud whenever ROH is back. Mark Briscoe vs. Josh Woods was a fun match. I love the FroggyBow and everything about Mark with his redneck kung fu. It's sad it took Jay's death to give us Mark as a singles star, but I hope they know they got something with him. MJF is such a jerk. It's beautiful. I liked the story he was telling and then bringing out Daniels to shit on Bryan only for Daniels to turn it around and throw it in his face was a nice touch. Bryan is on a hot streak right now so I'm looking forward to the Iron Man Match. Jack Perry vs. Brian Cage was all right for a little man vs. big man match. Before it started I wondered about Christian and wouldn't you know he shows up after the match is over. I'm looking forward to Christian vs. Jungleboy so I'm glad it's finally on the map again. Hangman vs. Kip was all right. The bigger story was after the match with Mox talking shit and it bringing out The Dark Order. I loved Evil Uno stepping up to Mox like he did and we should get a good match out of it next week. The main event was all right. I don't get this story of outsiders vs. originals. Trying to have Ruby caught in the middle makes no real sense. Overall a good show tonight. Not spectacular, but good.

  19. Anthony Bowens and Jay Lethal are fun in the ring together. Orange Cassidy comes in and all kinds of fucking around happens. Billy Gunn is ISOLATED~! The Ass Boys are here! A bereaving Jeff Jarrett is as always a TOTAL HEAT MACHINE! They do a PREPOSTEROUS delayed Shiver Me Timbers section that was hilariously elaborate. Bravo. Well, we go from goofy fun to crazed ass beating. OH YEAH! HERE WE GO! Preston Vance is taking an ass beating like a MAN. Oh man, RUSH is getting some HEAT! Vance is doing good in this. Picture in picture means MOX BLEEDS! RUSH and MOX beat the hell out of each other. CLAUDIO GOES INSANE! VANCE IS AT 3/4 RUBY! (My daughter is here! With her boyfriend! I'll finish this later.)

  20. things I remember from this episode of Dynamite Jeff Jarrett honors the memory of his father by working as a heel a day after his dad dies. Lots of jolly bullshit spots with Singh/Cassidy then Singh tagging out, then Cassidy tagging out, then getting Billy Gunn vs Jeff Jarrett. The faces win after the world's longest scissor spot. Moxley bleeds like crazy yet again. Preston Vance also bleeds because yeah sure. JR looks old talking to Wardlow. Also Babyface Adam Cole talked to Renee in another segment. I think Josh Woods is dominating on the shows i'm not watching because he had some wins but I didn't remember who he was. Then he lost to Mark Briscoe. Jesse the Body mode ON I can't believe that Christopher Daniels, Gorilla. MJF gave him some money to make sure he could find Laredo, and Daniels thinks it was a bribe. That Christopher Daniels should be thankful that he was given a chance to get on TV but he chooses to bash MJF. MJF gave that ingrate Daniels what he deserved, Gorilla Jesse the Body mode OFF Jack Perry kinda-sorta pins Brian Cage. Then Christian Cage shows up, maces Jungle Boy, and his arm heals just in time to hit the Unprettier. Hopefully more than one Cage is allowed to get TV time at any one time around here, for the sake of Brian Cage's TV time. Also, we got multiple battle royals to set up a four way match that needed to happen instead of a straight up Acclaimed/Gunns rematch. We had some sort of backstage suspense for Adam Page vs Kip Sabian for some reason, then Page won, and Moxley came out and pretty much acted like a heel. Then the Dark Order showed up because Adam Page has the dorkiest backup friends in a promotion that has Butcher/Blade on TV. Then we get a Texas Death Match where Moxley will start bleeding during his entrance. Stokely got Hook suspended. We got all six members of the Jericho Appreciation Society in an interview. You almost need a score card to figure out who is in what faction from week to week. Saraya and Storm attacked a stunt fan pre-match. Apparently spraying Toni Storm's ass with spraypaint pre-ass smash is a spot now. That main event was weird. I guess Rubi Soho won but everybody was mad at her. Toni Storm vs Ruby Soho is a feud with origins in a Spencers Gifts at the Mall.

  21. Could have transitioned it into something more akin to Michael Douglas in falling down which came out in 93, man out of time who doesn't realize he's become the bad guy, but that is kinda what the did with Backlund

  22. A fun, if a bit sloppy, 8 Man opener. It kinda felt like the crowd died a little from Caster's less than sensitive rap. Not to say it was so bad or in bad taste, but I don't think it helped the heat here. Jeff Jarrett is so great in this role. I suspect the compassion for his loss will lead to more of our posters dropping their past baggage with him and recognizing the beauty of his Mempho game. Roosh!!! He's such a truly believable heel. This tornado was never going to be anything but what it was - terrific! Young Vance needs some reps, but he pulled his weight here. Jose never ceases to impress. If Claudio v Roosh is where we're going then let me aboard. Dug Kip, Butcher and Blade laying a beating on Hanger - nice simple set-up. Wardlow sitdown was fine, but they really oughta drop the completely unnecessary and corny score. So too the unsuitable (tho amusing) musical selection for the Gunns promo. I'm with @Dean on Mark Briscoe's potential as their next big sympathetic babyface. Josh Woods has quietly come a long way, but can somebody get him a 'respectable' pair of tights. The Adam Cole sitdown was fine, but would have been better off having bit more of a point. Nice promo segment with MJF. I especially loved the International feed portion - cussing out of the Laredo crowd. I don't want to say Christopher Daniels has thus far been misused in AEW, as he seems to have had an important position backstage, but... on camera, I really hope they give him a heel turn, a microphone, better gear and a proper Prophecy faction (in the ROH relaunch). Terrific stuff here. Tho, it wouldn't have hurt if they'd had a bit more of a physical exchange before going down to the 'master of the Fujiwara Armbar' - I like Max, I just don't buy that part of his act. And then yet another strong Brian Cage performance for all the unjustified haters. Jungle Jack's still on point. Ugh, tighten up the officiating tho - Nana interference without consequence? Well, I guess it is unfortunately on brand. Goddamn is it every great to see Chris't-yen! I was fully ready to register some butthurt complaints on the Acclaimed not getting a rematch, but then Bowens cut a good little promo, and all was well. Er sorta, not a 4 way fan. This, Now, annual pair of Battle Royals to determine two challengers for the tag belts thing is, umm, fucking dumb, but I can't say I'm not amused. Ohhhh yeah, I'll take a Top Fox-Elite rematch! Can we please all WILL an AR Fox-Kenny singles bout into existence too? For the worst match in AEW televised history Hangman v Kip Sabian was pretty good! I was fully ready to see Kip Sabian move along to the Indies, but he seems to be slowly starting to figure something out recently. I like this trio with Butcher and Blade, but then, everybody seems to work well with those consummate Pros. Daniel Garcia is good on the mic. I look forward to his bout with Starks. Haha, love Hook being suspended pending an investigation. The 3 Way main was fine. Special thanks to Saraya for just blatantly jumping in the ring to remind everybody that 3 ways are completely illogical. Why not just cheat from the beginning? I wish I did, but I don't quite see Any reason to care which side Ruby Soho picks. The Women's Division has been a lot stronger in ring, but this Main Event storyline could certainly use to improve. Ruby gesturing the air title belt seemed to lack confidence, and for good reason. But sure, I'll enjoy watching our heroic champion take her to the mat. All of that to say, as per usual, I had a helluva lot fun watching this show. Some big matches on the horizon!

  23. I love that in the span of a month the AEW Originals vs...Freelancers (Did I hear Tony say that last night?!) feud started with Toni/Saraya being subtly heel-ish and morphed into Yelling-at-the-crowd-tearing-up-signs-spraypainting Toni's ass...? Like there was no room for subtley there. I think a couple more weeks of Saraya doing promos that trashed the originals somewhat accidentally (Like what she basically did her first 3-4 months though not on purpose) with the odd cheap win would have made more sense than to go from "We love it in AEW! This is where competition is!" is to "Losers!" in the span of a couple weeks. Actually I think the whole feud is pretty stupid, because they can't say WWE or even really allude to WWE. And Toni's whole deal was underutilized in WWE to maximizing her potential as a world champ and now suddenly she's...anti...AEW?! I don't know why AEW can only run one women's angle at a time. NXT has 2 hours of TV time a week, but somehow still run 3-4 women's angles at a time with one less set of women's titles (Women's World/Tag Titles vs AEW World/TBS/ROH titles). Mark Briscoe looked great here. I was wondering if you could run an angle where one of his former opponents offers to be his partner to defend the titles. then turns on Mark after losing the match to what would be absolutely NUCLEAR heat or if that would be a "too soon" bit of booking. I actually think the ROH World Title should go Claudio -> Rush -> and then Mark Briscoe at Final Battle. Satam Singh's strut behind Jay Lethal was amazing but Lethal didn't seem to know he was doing it and cut him off too fast! Alas, the cringiest thing on the episode was that backstage Bucks/Omega promo. Just dreadful stuff.

  24. MJF came back at the same event as the press scrum. I think its pretty clear that he was always supposed to come back and challenge Punk, but Punk got hurt the day after Double or Nothing at the same Dynamite that MJF "walked out" on. My belief is that MJF was supposed to dick off for a month and then would have returned either at the end of Forbidden Door or a big Dynamite around then, to challenge Punk for the title at All Out. Instead Punk gets hurt, so they have MJF chill until Punk comes back to win the title and challenge him then. MJF was never going to sit out for 2 years until his contract was up.
    2 points
  25. But MJF doesn't book himself. The will he-won't he show up/booked a flight was an angle. The promo the next night and the walking out was an angle. Did it hurt Wardlow? Maybe, but that isn't MJF, that's Khan. Tony is the one trying to make him a special attraction. I think people are falling for MJF's character if they think he is backstage pulling strings like he's WCW Hogan.

  26. They have said in the past that Revolution is their WrestleMania, but it still doesn't help when people see All Out as that. So yeah, it would do them some good to distinguish one of their PPVs as the biggest one. And if American audiences weren't such shit and turned off by round robin tournaments, I'd say AEW should adopt the G1 as their special Royal Rumble thing. In all my life, I don't think I ever once had an issue following a round robin format. Or better yet, and I almost hate to say it, use the Swiss format that Magic: the Gathering and other events use for their tournaments. Matches are selected randomly, the more you win the more you're paired up with others who are winning the same amount of matches, and then from that you get a final 4 single elimination tournament.

  27. Of course the other owners hate them. They're actually spending money and trying to win. And exposing all the "we can't afford it" lies from other teams.

  28. I was recently thinking about this. On the one hand, I don't want three months of dueling promos or countless matches/tag matches involving two wrestlers set to face at the next ppv. On the other hand, starting feuds a week out from the show isn't great either. I like the longer time between ppvs because we can get some mini-feuds and interesting one-off matches, but I agree that it'd be nice to find some sort of middle ground there.

  29. Thing is, does MJF really have the love and respect of the locker room? He fucked over Wardlow big time and ruined his huge moment. He doesn’t really work with the other guys, saving himself for a special attraction.

  30. Just saw MJF's segment on YT (that had to be cut up into two separate videos) and goddamn am I ready for MJF to fuck off forever. They are building up this match as a 'test' for MJF but he'll be absolutely pedestrian in the match and will squeak by a win against Danielson. Unless Tony Khan is seeing that the experiment of having MJF as World champion has failed and gives the title to Danielson on 3/5.

  32. That Page/Sabian match was probably one of the worst matches given ten minutes or more you'll see in AEW. The blind leading the blind to pointless spot after pointless spot, no selling, no structure. They didn't even look lost so much as just a belief that this was perfectly fine. The crowd was rightfully apathetic until Mox showed up

  33. 8 man was a fun opener. Texas Tornado ruled. I dug the Wardlow seg making the Joe feud more personal. Mark Briscoe continues to shine, love it. Solid MJF/Daniels segment. Great to see Christian back. Womens triple threat main eventing was interesting/different, I thought for sure being in that spot meant something big was going to happen but then nothing really did. Pretty good show overall. Looking forward to Rampage SLAM DUNK! with another Vertvixen sighting + the Top Fox/Elite rematch, and then two weeks of tag team battle royals on Dynamite should be fun

  42. I kinda think he's at the right level now, but no doubt he can work, and an angle where he "doesn't care" his way to the world title then finally breaks down with emotion would be some awesome tv. Wheeler being MIA in this conversation just shows how ridiculously stacked the AEW roster is. He's got all the tools for sure, and he's young, so there's not a lot of urgency to make him the next top face.

  45. <Hager voice> I LIKE this show. Opener was a lot of fun, other than maybe burying Singh (who bumps like a guy 2/3 his size) a bit. Bowens gets to shine, we get a lot of comedy, the faces win and get to scissor. Texas Tornado match was hella fun. Vance was the weak link but hit a .4 Ruby and didn’t look lost. Crowd brawl to start was kind of weak, mostly walking around. I think we’re maybe getting Claudio-Rush at the ROH PPV and that might get my money. Briscoe-Woods was also enjoyable, Mark is fun and I’m a fan of Woods and wish he got to be more of a Steiner Brothers mashup. Also, I had been thinking recently that I wasn’t missing the Lucha Brothers so OF COURSE. Best MJF promo I’ve seen, an actual excellent traditional heel promo and I, wondering who wrote the script for him. Chris Daniels comes out to do a 5 minute promo for the upcoming ROH programming. Also, that reminds me how awesome the bloody taped post-match Danielson promo was, take my money. Perry-Cage was a match that happened and a post-match angle that happened. Funny to see them slowly phasing out “Jungle Boy”, but will the fans rebel if they get rid of Tarzana? Sabian-Page was also a match that happened. Post-match was top notch work from Mox and solid work from Page, more take my money. Also, I can’t take Evil Uno seriously as a badass. I watch Dark/Elevation. I guess Sabian and Swolverine serve a role as JTTS but I’m tired of them. I don’t have that AEW original loyalty, and in fact was shocked to find out that Kip Sabian was pushed early on. Main was a perfectly fine 3-way in the way that there’s a lot of action, a lot of shenanigans, and a lot of awkwardness. I kind of expected Thunder Rosa. Saraya is cringe. Ruby deserves a belt, but with Jade squatting on the TNT title and Athena kicking ass with ROH, not sure what there is for her.

  46. I was going by the (possibly fabed) 40K number that's always been bandied about. I suppose they could always tarp half the stadium off like SummerSlam recently had, but i agree entirely, just fill Daily's next door or whatever the indoor arena is down there instead at that point. I'm a little butt hurt about the Mohegan thing, and here's why: that's actually one of my home arenas, I live about an hour from there, give or take - I've mentioned before, but the attendance at Rampage/Dark from there on Halloween weekend was downright embarrassing. This last Smackdown (which btw, I was told drew WWE's highest attendance in that building, ever) had two pretty hefty advantages IMO, beyond just being on Titan home turf: 1) Rampage was the Friday of Halloween weekend, so that cuts out a ton of your HS, college, and young adult fans who are out partying - tough to compare to do-nothing-ass January/February. The whole casino was dead that night 2) The week before Smackdown, there was a massive sold out show at the same arena (Exodus, Black Label Society, and headliners Anthrax celebrating 40 years together) - I was in attendance, obviously, and I am not kidding you, this show had exactly four ads on a loop for nearly the entire time between sets: Coke, Bud Light, Smackdown, Truly. Coke, Bud Light, Smackdown, Truly. Coke, Bud Light, Smackdown, Truly. Over and over again. Definitely a smart move to take advantage of both a) the obvious heavy metal/wrestling crossover, and b) what is basically a captive audience waiting for the next set. Really hoping that local advertising, coordinating with venues and local vendors, radio stations, newscasts etc. is an area that Jeff Jarrett can help them improve upon, and hopefully they can put together a good local promotion infrastructure in the future - I've said it before a bunch, but they really need like a Zane Bresloff-type figure

  47. Fun opener between Chella/Foxy v. Heavy Metal Sisters. Not liking commentary pushing dissension with the Sisters, hopefully they stick together even if they rarely win. Vivian and Tormenta have another 'pack a lot in a short time' match. Vivian's flip dive through the ropes ruled. Coach Campanelli continues to be the best, always a blast to watch both in-ring and in segments. Main event felt big time between two great teams. Genesis & Exodus are both excellent for being relative unknowns outside of WOW. Nice finish with Tiki coming back around.
