  1. The name on the contract does say Khan. However the contract reads... Great-O-Khan.

  2. Dave Meltzer is a poor analyst and shouldn't even try. He's a wrestling version of Nate Silver in some ways. I just want Silver to analyze the data itself, not the reasons that the data is what it is. w/r/t Meltzer, just tell me what your sources are saying; don't try to analyze it. That goes for Alvarez, who is even more maddening than Meltzer because he comes off as assured of his own analytical talent, but actually I'm pretty sure he's a total fucking dolt.

  3. One thing really bugged me on this show: Adam Cole wearing a suede jacket with his wet hair touching it. I’m happy for him, but that’s just wrong.

  4. I hope for some fans, this is putting into perspective the different between what actual journalism looks like vs. the subscription-based gossip mongering that wrestling journos have leaned so hard into this year. I am so pleased these people look so stupid.

  6. STREET FIGHT! STREET FIGHT! STREET FIGHT! We want BLOOD! and I assume that Tay Melo will deliver the blood! BUT FIRST! ROCK HARD! DARBY ALLIN! Juice DID tower over all the remaining Dark Order when he berated them for asking him to join! Darby does an extended Headlock! Allin then OPTS to totally fucking kill himself! Allin is so much fun. Robinson needs to bring in the Bullet Club to heat everything up. He throws some good punches. Robinson takes the SUWA Dropkick like a fucking KING! Oh yeah, I forgot that Robinson is pretty great at making folks look like a million bucks. ROCK HARD hits some slick looking offense. Three Sentons FOR TWO! Allin bounces off a Rib Breaker like a FREAK! Robinson hits a Cannonball to NOWHERE! I loved the WAHOO chops to drive Allin down the toprope to set up a BEAUTIFUL Lariat by Juice. JACKHAMMER for TWO! GREAT counter to a Toprope Brainbuster into a Scorpion Deathdrop! COFFIN DROP! That was good. Not as good as Allin/Mike Bennett, but still good. Juice Robinson looked good. Allin and Orange Cassidy are neck and neck in the longest string of good matches. The Gunns ruin the Acclaim's big moment! OR DO THEY? Austin Gunn is wearing tiny boybriefs! CHEEKS! Malakai Black has an awesome new helmet thing! Eddie Kingston is OVER in Los Angeles. The story behind this match is kinda stupid, but it is pro wrestling. Kingston and Malakai face each other! The crowd rises up as Kingston and Black try to decapitate each other and they both duck, sit down and stare at each other! Pro wrestling is also AWESOME. In picture in picture, the House of Black crushes Eddie and Ortiz! Black looks fucking GREAT in this. We go to an old school commercial break and come back to Brodie King fucking CRUSHING Kingston in the corner with a Cannonball! High Angle Tequila Sunrise Suplex by Kingston! EXPLOIDER by Kingston! Dangerous Backdrop by Kingston after Black kicks him in the face! There is a giant batch of BOOKING! Black kicks the fudge out of Kingston! Then! MINDGAMES! I assume this will all lead up to Kingston versus Brodie King eventually. Jeff Jarrett wins RAMPAGE AGAIN! All this to set up the Best Friends versus the unnamed stable of Jeff Jarrett, Jay Lethal, Sonjay Dutt and Satnam Singh! So this episode is kinda evening out the perfection of Wednesday's Dynamite. I mean, the wrestling is perfectly fine, but the FOURTH best match Wednesday had Jamie motherfucking Hayter in it. AWESOME! Both tag teams are dressed in matching outfits like in THE WARRIORS! Oh man, is RUBY GONNA BLADE?!?! YES!!!! THis is fucking AWESOME! They do the NecroButcher sitting and hitting each other spot in picture in picture! Ruby and Tay lay it in! Willow and Ruby take an ass beating! Tay Melo is so fucking great lately. OH MAN! IS ANNA GONNA BLADE?!? YESS! DEATH VALLEY DRIVER TO THE APRON by WILLOW on ANNA! MAN! Ruby bladed like a fucking CHAMP! Willow Powerbombs Anna DIRECTLY ON THE FLOOR FROM THE RAMP! Tay with the GOTCH STYLE POWERBOMB THROUGH THE TABLE! Tay with the THUMB TACKS! DESTINATION UNKNOWN INTO THE TACKS! That was fucking AWESOME. JESUS CHRIST, RUBY SOHO IS FUCKING HARDCORE! Tay Melo is so fucking AWESOME. Anna Jay took the two craziest bumps. That was fucking great. AEW RULES THE MOTHERFUCKING WORLD!

  7. Seconded, from an actual journalist who writes about finance. If I am writing an article about data or a news event. I get actual experts to talk about said data and their insights. I might have a little room for contextualization on my own if it is something I have written about a bunch, and I certainly will ask counterpoints to my sources, but it’s always best to leave it to others to do the “here is why.” Dave has added in so much conjecture so many times about why different things are happening with storylines or people’s pushes or punishments and etc. And his conjecture happens so quickly after something unfolds. It just makes me wonder if he actually has working knowledge of why something happened — someone told him — or if he is just making up a lot of stuff and he knows what his audience wants. I am also not a fan of him being a critic of the product while also being a journalist who covers events. Whether or not that leads to bias, there is an argument to be made that the more willing someone is as a source might lead to more favorable star ratings or Vice-versa and that can affect someone’s livelihood and bookings and etc. I don’t want to make it seem that I don’t like Dave. He’s written a wrestling trade publication longer than anyone and knows more about the industry than anyone. He does a great job with histories and the like. And he has certainly broken a lot of actual industry news. But there are a lot of things he does that don’t fly, and commenting on things outside of what he really knows is not a good look. But it is really not that hard for him to get an analyst report about a company (sometimes they are just available online but usually the company or the analyst himself will just send it to a reporter if asked.) There are almost always notes written by the analyst explaining his rationale. And I also talk to analysts all of the time. EX: I used to write about the energy industry for the energy industry equivalent of The Observer. I would get a report about sales figures for, say, Exxon from Morgan Stanley. I would quite the report and then either talk to the analyst on the phone or go back and forth with email questions. Sometimes I would discuss what I had been hearing from other sources. I do not have a WON subscription but has Dave ever done that for the WWE? There are literally people at a lot of big institutions whose job it is to go over the financial statements of the company and how it fits into the broader picture of the media landscape. Their names are even on the WWE’s website (since that is all disclosed.) None of this is secret research. And he is the one wrestling journalist I actually do respect because he has written for some big outlets and has talked with real sports journalists plenty of times. Anyone else writing about this stuff has absolutely no idea what the fuck they are talking about.

  10. I think he's in his own head a little bit. That promo on MJF was so amazing that now it feels like he's trying to do the same thing every week. The last thing a guy like Starks needs to do is "try." He needs to relax and find his groove. His delivery is still top notch, and that's like 70% of the battle to me. If you sound like you don't mean what you say, it almost doesn't matter about content. That's why I find guys like Seth Rollins so insufferable. I don't believe what he says, and I don't believe he believes what he says. That might've changed in the last month or so, but for a long time he came off the wrong kind of disingenuous.

  11. Sting is one of my all time favourite wrestlers growing up with my #1 in Bret Hart, The Undertaker and Randy Savage. The bright colours and blonde hair. What a transformation going from Surfer Sting to Crow Sting, the best iteration. Fuck Hogan and Bischoff for WCW Starrcade 1997. Fuck Wolfpac Sting. Sting's TNA run was hit and miss. Liked the all too brief hybrid version of Surfer Sting/Crow Sting/Wolfpac Sting which debuted at TNA Bound for Glory 2006 when he beat Jeff Jarrett for the NWA World Heavyweight Championship. Joker Sting was a favourite of mine for obvious reasons. I hated Sting's WWE run particularly vs. Triple H at WWE WrestleMania XXXI for a number of reasons: Sting vs. The Undertaker was the money match, Sting who never left WCW vs. The Undertaker who never left WWF, the n.W.o helping Sting and Sting jobbing. Sting thought the cinematic match Taker had vs. AJ Styles at WWE WrestleMania XXXVII was the avenue to making it happen but no. Sting getting hurt to Seth Rollins at WWE Night of Champions 2015. So upsetting that having to retire. Sting's AEW run has been amazing, his team with Darby Allin vs. Ricky Starks/Brian Cage in his first match for 6 years at AEW Revolution 2021, a cinematic one on my birthday weekend. Sting/Darby Allin vs. #FTR is the best Sting/Darby match at AEW Grand Slam Dynamite 2021. Sting no selling Superkick Party by the Bucks at AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door 2021. Old man Sting fucking jumping off shit. So glad Sting is having this run going out on a high, one of his best in his long career.

  12. Here is an analyst whose job it is to pay attention to the WWE and media companies at large with his take on the whole affair and where things may be headed. This guy immediately went on Twitter and shot down the Saudi story as it was circulating. He is somebody who would likely know and hear about things. https://lightshedtmt.com/2023/01/12/__trashed-2/

  14. Listened to this again, and to distill it, these facts are already baked into Morgan Stanley's prediction that WWE will get AT LEAST a 1.35x increase in their rights, more likely 1.5x or more. So Meltzer dropped the ball on this one.

The best thing that comes out of any of this is the Stephanie McMahon and HHH get away from the business and just turn into to regular happy rich assholes on social media who post occasionally funny mostly narcissistic bullshit but aren't actively fucking people over on the daily and I can kind of like them again.

  23. Gotta agree on the comments about the content of some AEW promos. Stuff like Action Andretti using a low blow from Tay as rationale for "Sammy can't control his woman". Fuck me! The only people who think women should be controlled are too busy tweeting at teenage climate activist and being arrested in Romania to be watching AEW. Maybe this has been noted before, but I can't take Juice Robinson seriously at all because I just see and hear Will Forte whenever he cuts a promo. Loved the in-ring this week, nice mix of styles and paces. It's the variety that I enjoy most in AEW. I'm really looking forward to Rampage for KOTBT vs Eddie/Ortiz. Hoping for that swank God's Hate entrance song too

  24. Great show overall. Crowd was hot and apparently they had strong last minute/day of sales (I hope it was due to buzz around the product and people weren't expecting Sasha). Top 3 matches delivered. The degree of difficulty on stuff in the main event was wild. I think it was simultaneously the craziest and safest/best executed big ladder match, at least that I can recall. I don't recall a lot of trios ladder matches in the states either. I thought Lucha Bros needed the win more, but I'll wait to see the directions they go in with both teams. Kenny as a single pretty much has to be a heatseeking missile for the world title so I get having the trios belts on them to keep him away from it. That was the original plan back when Punk was going to be champ, to keep them apart for a while. I need to watch all 3 matches again without commercials, I always like them better on second watch. - Cole was a legit great surprise. I kinda thought he was done, got a little choked up seeing him so emotional. I didn't see his ROH babyface stuff. That was a long time ago though, everything about him screams working from underneath babyface to me. Also think he should be a tag or trios guy, if for nothing else maybe it keeps him healthier. I dug him a lot in NXT until things got stale. Thought his AEW run was underwhelming to put it nicely, but a lot of it was the booking. Thinking back on it, he was a tag champ and a secondary champ in NXT before they put the top belt on him. I think that's where Tony fucked up, pushing him to the moon rather than slow building him. And personally I thought it was kind of a bad look for AEW. It hurt Hangman too, having Cole as his first big challenger after the Danielson matches, but what's done is done. Hanger has recovered IMO, hopefully Cole can stay healthy and get on a good run. - I liked the story in Page/Mox, was fine with the finish. On doing "head injury" angles when you have real concussion injuries going on I've got mixed feelings. It goes back to the "Owen Voice" stuff. Wrestling has been faking injuries forever. You've got Bryan Danielson's take on this, who believes you should use everything in pro-wrestling. Real life, real injuries, everything. He wanted to do worked head injury stuff in WWE but they wouldn't let him. In general I agree with Bryan, but honestly I think I side with WWE on that one. It's kind of case by case. I know everyone wants desperately to work the fans and it's really hard today, and there's lot's of blurred lines and grey area....but there's certain stuff I'd rather they not fuck around with too much when you see how devastating repeated concussions have been to people. But like they say, it ain't ballet and a few eggs may get cracked - I had zero clue who Hauser was, I thought he was from Yellowstone which shows you how current on pop culture I am. I looked him up though and saw he got WWE references changed to AEW in a movie he was working on so he's cool with me! Loved the cheesy Bobby Duvall shirt too I'm sure there's more but most everything has been covered. AEW starting in 20->21 has been really good at closing out the last couple months of the year strong and starting off the next one hot

  33. I finally got around to watching last week's Rampage/Battle of the Belts and the thread is locked. Fun, easy 2 hours of wrestling. Top Flight v. Mox/Danielson was the highlight for me. I love when Jericho does commentary and I dig his interactions with JR and Tony some great musical references on these shows "My way your way anything goes tonight!" - Jericho with a shoutout to his buddy Duff Jericho - "He looks confused..." JR - "And dazed!" Jericho - "Dyslexic Zeppelin over here!" (great band name, trademark it Chris!) And then you had Kip's "I'm in your head! I'm in your head!" and he breaks into The Cranberries!

  36. At the very least, AEW just got a ton of free publicity and became known to a lot more people with money with the news coming out today. But whoever “leaked” the “Vince can have a job” line to CNBC shows me they aren’t serious and are instead more interested in trying to flex.

  41. Everything that Hauser fella said about Jarrett -chef's kiss-. I hope Andretti was taking notes, how to attempt to torch a heel without LOL YOUR WIFE GETS AROUND. (Didn't post in the dynamite topic this week and that's been bugging me) Love Kings of the Black Throne and Kingston/Ortiz. It does make me wish early AEW though were faces weren't.... dumb. Feels like Ortiz and Kingston have been through enough to know they're getting played... probably. Match was great too. If not the trios titles for the whole group, I'd love for Malakai and Brody to be the ones to dethrone the Acclaimed. Bandido vs. Danielson! How are TayJay the best at bringing the violence~ in this company? Only quibble, the barbed wire queenslayer is legit attempted murder and probably.... should not be broken out unless it's a super super super special occasion or blowoff match. I know Ruby was hurt for a while but I hope with this program over TK actually lets her build off this. Great episode!

  44. There is a huge difference between funding your son’s e-fed come to life and hoping it goes somewhere and buying a $6.5 billion media property that is profitable and has valuable intellectual property that can be used in so many ways. The WWE is financially a really good company and a good bet as an investment. I don’t think it is happening with the Khans. I think they certainly made inquiries with investment banks or whoever and that is how it ended up in Barron’s. You can’t just email a Barron’s reporter and say “hey, we are interested in buying WWE” and they run it in an article. But the CNBC article where they say Vince can have a job if they buy it — maybe that was said in earnestness but it was also absolutely the wrong thing to say. I could see TK not having the self-awareness to realize how that would fly (and I firmly believe he was the unquoted source) but that also just reeked of someone trying to flex and get his name out there knowing it was highly unlikely they will be unable to outbid Comcast.

  45. On this front, I have wondered if no matter who acquires it if Tony would check on the availability of any footage the new owners might not consider monetizable or relevant to WWE's cultural footprint. We have every reason to believe he'd want as much as possible.

  46. The path with MJF is to use truths. I'd be much more interested in hearing something like: "Takeshita, huh? Everyone's real excited about you. They were excited about Muta too. Excited about Kabuki. Excited about Liger. Excited about Nakamura. Guess what none of them ever did? They never won the big one. Never won the championship here in a major US wrestling promotion like I did. And you'll never do it." Then knock the fans for blindly liking Japanese wrestling and put over the fact he's the champ and that means him and his style of wrestling is the best and they're all sheep, etc. etc.. There are ways to be edgy, to play to history and insider-ness, and still make it work kayfabe.
