  1. So of all the mini-pushes where someone new is tested out as a big TV challenger for the world title... has anyone captured that moment more than Ricky Starks did tonight? That was a bigtime passionate promo that took no shit from MJF and got the people exceptionally invested in the issue. It's the promo we've all thought Starks had in him if he got the ball. He may have talked himself up a tier through sheer force of will and charisma. That was a PPV-level sales pitch, not a TV sales pitch. Speaking of PPV-level pitches, what a show close. It's been clear that there's not much of a hook for the ROH show in spite of it having a very good card. Tony has one trick to move ROH PPVs, but it's a pretty great trick. Darby mostly works best when he has a big guy he can be the heavy underdog for and toss his body around with abandon. Joe's best these days when someone else can really bring the speed to compliment his all-time swag. This might be the best thing they've done all year, both guys. Bring on the coffin match and pray for Darby. Good show.

  2. Allright! Bring on the Professional Wrestling! Ricky Starks! ALLRIGHT! A BATTLE ROYALE! I HATE THEM ALMOST AS MUCH AS TRIPLE THREATS! What a week! DUSTIN RHODES! DALTON CASTLE AND THE BOYS! Oh man, I hate these things. What do I know. Dalton Castle making fart noises on Matt Hardy's tummy is the highlight so far! Orange Cassidy tells a little story with Kip Sabien. Dalton Castle is your Battle Royals superstar! Oh! And Brian Cage is finally too much for him. My heart is broken. I'm GUESSING that Matt Hardy eliminates Ethan Page. Captain Shawn Dean winning would be the Vince Russo finish we are all waiting for. GNARLY Chokeslam on Jack Perry by Big Bill! I really don't care. but why isn't W Morrisey in this? Ricky Starks is your winner! MJF hits the ring immediately! Bryan Danielson versus MJF will be good. Ricky heated that baby up. That was great. Starks is so not winning, but he heated that up. Darby Allin is going to take an ass beating. Allin is good at those things and Joe is a Proto-Brodie King. Allin TOPES TO NOWHERE! Samoa Joe is dancing with Allin into the barricade and into the side of the ring. Oh man, POWERSLAM on the CONCRETE! Joe heels it up during the picture in picture. We come out of it and Allin bumps HUGE against the ring post! COFFIN DROP on the floor! CODE RED! FOR TWO! Uranagi by Joe! Allin goes for the Coffin Drop but he falls right into Joe's Rear Naked Choke! Allin is fucking great at making the DEATH VISAGE while passing out! Postmatch, WARDLOW doesn't save Darby from the Muscle Buster on the skateboard! BCC vs JAS! Wheeler Yuta is OVER in Austin. Daniel Garcia and Yuta are magic in the ring together. Hagar is our SECRET WRESTLING MACHINE! Yuta assumes the Ricky Morton role. NASTY Superplex by Yuta onto Garcia! Hagar is great as a Southern heel, cutting off the ring and beating the crap out of Wheeler Yuta. Neato German Suplex by Yuta as he fights for the tag! Giant Swing! Lariat FOR TWO! COMPLEX DOUBLE SUBMISSION INTO A ROOL UP FOR THE WIN BY CLAUDIO! Regal makes his swan song. This is a big night of wrestling. It's Jade Cargill! And Red Velvet and Leila Grey! Against Madison Rayne, Skye Blue and Keira Hogan! It's good to see Red Velvet again. Skye Blue and Red Velvet are good on the mat! Leila Grey sets up Skye's kick on the mat really well. Skye assumes the Ricky Morton role as we head to picture in picture. Grey grabs a headlock for the entire commercial break so this match suddenly RULES. Red Velvet tags in to give up the hot tag! Hogan is awesome as our Robert Gibson, beating on Cargill! Cargill cuts her off but she has another comeback! Cargill CRUSHES Madison Rayne with the Jaded! That was good. YAY! RED VELVET! I like how Cargill had an aura of being a force of nature even while selling. Hayter/ Baker versus Saraya and somebody sounds like fun. JON MOXLEY vs KONOSUKE TAKESHITA, THE REMATCH, makes one assume that THERE WILL BLOOD! FTR! FTR! FTR! Well, THIS will be good. JESUS, AUSTIN IS MOLTEN! Oh man, they are doing the Briscoes match. FTR needs to completely wrestle heel. DOUBLE SHARPSHOOTERS by the Acclaimed! Oh man, FTR are sooo fucking great. Oh man, I cannot WAIT to see the International Feed of this. Max Caster is taking an ass beating. Cash Wheeler sinks in a Chinlock as this match cannot possibly get any greater. Anthony Bowen is awesome as a house afire. FTR make him look like one hiundred million dollars. GREAT FUCKING SPIKE PILEDRIVER! Fun nearfalls! GREAT NEARFALL ON THE BIG RIG! MAx misses the Mic Drop! LARIAT OF THE YEAR BY CASH WHEELER! Max rolls through the Powerbomb and GETS THE PIN! That was fucking great. That was the fourth best FTR match this year, behind the Briscoes two and the Aussie Open match. JESUS FUDGE! FTR vs the Briscoes in a Dog Collar Match? I gotta buy this fucking PPV. Jesus, AEW RULES THE ENTIRE MOTHERFUCKING FUCKING WORLD!

  4. Holy fucking shit. What a Dynamite. Everyone was playing “hold my beer.” Starks’ promo was out of this world star making god. Then that gets topped by Darby vs Joe which I’d give 11 stars to. And then somehow the main event topped that. And if that wasn’t enough, after the main event we get the announcement of FTR vs Dem Boys 3: Double Dog Collar Match?!?! Are you fucking kidding me? Yeah. AEW rules the whole motherfucking world.

  5. F'N HELL WHAT A MATCH THEY JUST ADDED TO FINAL BATTLE! Just sold a bunch of buys I guess. What a show! So much wrestling! So many excellent things set up for the near future! I hate fake injury angles. Hate em. BUT: A Battle Royal with both Dustin and Dalton involved? Way to win me back over IMMEDIATELY, AEW! Fuck Big Cass, though. That looked legitimately dangerous. Cool finish to the Battle Royal! Who could have predicted Starks DEMOLISHING Friedman in the promo battle? That was great stuff. Joe nope-ing out of a Darby tope was EXACTLY what I wanted out of these lads. Bits of this were reminiscent of the legendary Nero Butcher match. Like that sick powerslam. I was bummed out by Joe's heel turn because I LOVED Ward-joe, but HEEL JOE IS SO AWESOME! TWO GREAT, CREATIVE FINISHES IN A ROW! That truck bump was SICK. CLAUDIO SNITZKIED THE HAT! In my books, that's a pure heel move. Hager should wear the hat next week, but it has a hole in it. SHIDA VS HAYTER! I hope my heart doesn't explode. My heart survived Baddies vs Goodies so I guess it's strong enough. That was a really good trios match. Pretty classic structure. MOX VS LARD LAD!!! GOOD HEAVENS!!! I was legit surprised that the crowd reaction was not more divided during the main. Hats off to FTR. They have no problem putting another team over clean. What a show! DOUBLE DOG COLLARS!!

  9. Battle Royale was a foregone conclusion and not good even by battle royale standards, but I guess it set up/carried on some low and mid-card feuds and I love Dalton Castle and The Boys. I want a Butcher-Dustin match please. MJF is at least not trying for cool heel or tweeter heat anymore, so there’s that. He does his usual schtick minus the bidding war but with shooty comments and WWE references. Then Starks FUCKING BURIES HIM with nothing but the truth, delivered with heart and passion. Too bad he’s going to lose, but hopefully he will get his turn at the top soon. Mox is always great. Mox vs Takeshita is going to be amazing and I was really really sad for 10 minutes after it was announced because I want to be there live for that more than almost any potential match. Darby is going to be in a wheelchair by age 40 taking some of these ridiculous bumps. And I’m a sicko because I mark for it. He’s such a fantastic rag doll, which made Joe look even more violent and scary than usual. But that skateboard bump could easily have gone horribly horribly wrong and I think it’s luck as much as anything that it didn’t. Hayter-Shida will be good. I liked the BCC-JAS tag team match, yeah Jake was the weak link but he was not as weak a link as he was a few months ago, and Yuta-Garcia always are fun together. Danny sells a big back bump like Rick Rude sold an atomic drop. Good finish, but guess JAS retain at PPV. Glad to see that Jade got to get her heat back and look like a monster since they’ve been making her look so weak recently . Way to kill Hogan as a challenger immediately. At least Skye Blue got some good TV time and looked great working with Red Velvet. Already way over Britt-Saraya. Main event was fantastic, great action, great build, great story with FTR slowly working heel to get an edge, liked the flash finish. Caster was relatively kind with his disses on FTR in the rap, which was a nice touch with the ostensible face v face matchup. Jeff Jarrett can fuck off. But nice match reveal at the very end. Will I buy the PPV? No, gotta save money. Will I regret it? Yes. Last thing: Austin crowd did me proud, incredibly hot all night and no embarrassing signs.

  12. Matt really liking one of my favorite wrestlers makes me all warm inside. Punk will be missed if they can’t come to an understanding once he’s not injured. Definitely brought a different type of match layout to AEW. Gutted we’ll probably never get another Danielson match, or versus Omega, or my personal AEW dream match in CMFTR vs The Elite.

  13. That was a fun two hours of professional wrestling. I was about to write off Ricky Starks. He was cool as hell in Team Taz and there were a few people who accurately pointed out he should have had Adam Cole’s cool heel spot. The whole turn and then feud against Powerhouse made him look like a nerd. I thought for sure he was just going to tread water but that promo 180’d him. He looked like he did a few months ago - the coolest motherf’er alive throwing straight fire MJF’s way. I know MJF is winning but I want to see those guys feud on and off for years. Jamie Hayter also comes off in a similar way. Not in a “coolest mofo” way, but she is just a shit-talking badass and who does not want that? Joe versus Darby was great. I laughed many times at Joe’s dickhead bully stuff throughout. Him cooly walking away when Darby spilled to the floor was everything. Loved it. That main event was great. The Acclaimed are awesome when they are in a really well laid out match. The first one against SITG was one of the best matches of the year. The rematches had diminishing returns. But FTR know how to do tag wrestling and their subtle heel work let The Acclaimed lean into their act and it ruled. This really makes me want to see them run it back with with a full fledged heel FTR ramming Bowens’s wrist in a car door a few times in the parking lot before the show. Great night.

  17. I'm glad he hears the criticism and listens/adjusts when it's constructive, but what he's saying isn't true at all. Joe has defended the TV title on Dynamite several times, Wheeler Yuta and Garcia main evented in Buffalo for the pure title, I definitely saw Maria/Bennett/Taven at some point, PRINCE NANA (always welcome btw) and his crew. It's kind of nitpicking, but I think Tony is the one who doesn't remember what's on what show in this case. I couldn't tell you the last time I watched Rampage, all my ROH complaints have been strictly Dynamite related

  19. They just put the World Title on the guy who, when things first started to fall apart in mid-Spring, was the guy who would have been wearing the belt at this point. Multiple feud possibilities here being set up. They did an audible and put the Tag Belts on possibly the hottest act in US wrestling with multiple feud opportunities tied in to their build, along with the FTR angle. They put the Women's World Title on the hottest wrestler in that division, who was built over the course of the year and now has two built-in feuds. They did all this while finding a way to keep one of their most recognizable performers hot feuding over a second-tier belt. Oh and all are people who would be considered "homegrown" acts. As others have pointed out, they've done a huge course correction while dealing with a massive number of injuries, tampering, and performer petulance.

  20. Khan definitely hears criticism. But he also hears it in his own way and he has his own mental lines in the sand which may not be the same as what others see/feel. Like the ROH stuff. He's very firm that ROH stuff has been 100% kept off Dynamite except for when it comes to Jericho because he'd be on there anyway. That it's been relegated to Rampage mostly. But I don't think the fanbase necessary remembers what was on Rampage and what was on Dynamite when it comes to the midcard.

  22. I love how in the Starks’ promo he started on the far corner of the ring mocking MJF, but as he progressively got more intense and confrontational he slowly made his way over to him. Forcing us as viewers closer to both visually and figuratively what was being said. Subtle and well done blocking.

  23. They should run Joe vs Darby Best of Seven but, like , one match every six weeks or so to give Darby time to recover.

  24. Personally don't care. I love both men's excesses in the ring. I think if we just push the gas pedal on both sides we're gonna get something great. If I'm gonna steal a page from Matt I'd say maybe... Hansen/Kobashi? (Wishful thinking, I know.) And look at that stacked-ass ROH card, huh? Tony clearly wants us to buy that thing.

  31. Some specific stuff about Regal from the call here. Tony also talked about personal stuff about his mom being sick, hence the "hospital" comments in the following quotes. https://prowrestling.net/site/2022/12/07/aew-media-call-report-live-notes-on-tony-khan-speaking-with-the-pro-wrestling-media-ahead-of-saturdays-roh-final-battle-pay-per-view/

  34. Excellent show! Absolutely star making work from Ricky Starks tonight, loved it. Perfect setting for him to do it in Austin. Added so much to next week's match and while MJF will obviously retain, I too want to see these two have an on-off years long rivalry now. The crowd loving Dalton Castle avoiding elimination was the highlight of the battle royal otherwise. Darby/Joe was awesome. Great chemistry, great finish. BCC/JAS tag was solid, finish was a bit sudden and out of nowhere. As much as I was not a fan of the whole Regal turns on Moxley just for MJF to turn right on him anyway, I actually loved the attempt at explaining things done here tonight. Totally down with the storytelling of the three brothers finding one last video message from their father who was killed last week. Felt like a more proper writing off/sendoff for Regal. Enjoyed the Baddies tag, but not sure about what seemed like subtle dissension between Jade & Red at the end there, I like them together. From what I recall, Thunder Rosa said in late October that she was "aiming for January" in regards to her return, so that'd be my guess for Saraya's partner. Really good main event. Shocked it had a clean finish with the Acclaimed going over like that but it did a great job in putting them over. Popped huge for the post-match reveal for Final Battle, that was unexpected, super hyped. Loved the creative way of going about it since the Briscoes couldn't actually appear. Curious to see what gets added to Zero Hour. Tony talked about putting big focus back on Rampage and now we get Moxley/Takeshita there, hell yeah.

  37. I think this is a bit unkind. It was quite fine. But it was a Jake Hager tag following that Starks promo and The Passion of the Darbs. The way the show was structured, it didn't stand a chance of following that.

  40. Clearly WWE is now trying to at least be wary of what they said on TV in regards to Regal as on onscreen character, last night Booker in discusiing Dempsey said "He's a throwback, like Fit Finlay or Dave Taylor" which is really funny.

  43. My prediction is FTR go heel and win the titles. Might explain Dax and Bryan happening out of nowhere last week. And it seemed like the plan was always for them to have all the titles but Acclaimed getting so over and some other stuff got in the way. Makes sense to put the belts on them before they start dropping the other titles. I'd expect them to lose the IWGP at Wrestle Kingdom I'd love to see Darby win the TNT title, but then again I also think he should be the guy to beat MJF down the line. Feels like he's been criminally underused over the last year

  44. Can't tell if serious. Dixie being told Spike didn't want to work with Russo then hiring Russo and lying to the network about it is NOT the same as Tony being told WBD don't want performers on their TV, and very publicly giving them a job where they.... aren't appearing on WBD TV. He signed them to ROH & has made them PPV only. He's not hiding anything. He's not being deceitful. He isn't lying to them. He is abiding by their ask. You are doing some real fancy mental gymnastics to make this confirm to your bias.
