  2. Man, the Dutch struck and stole my post? It's been a long 24 hours but... Biggest thing about Cassidy vs Shibata was how Shibata was really the first guy I've seen in AEW who had Cassidy's number when it came to the headgames. He's just too cool. To the point that I thought he should have won, which could have lead to Danielson beating Shibata and then touring wherever he wanted to defend it. Tyson seemed to know who Shibata was more than Cassidy but got pissy at Excalibur when he called something a leg trip instead of a STO which was amazing. I think I didn't say much about the women's tag other than it was probably the best Rayne looked and that Baker vs Skye felt like a sort of fresh match up considering who Skye usually gets to wrestle. I'm definitely looking forward to the singles match. Starks has a really fun path to the finals (assuming it's Starks vs E. Page in the finals), having to survive Archer and Cage. If they play their cards right, this is what might be able to really put him over the top. I like that he's got an almost conversational relationship with the crowd. I'll be honest in that Toa feels a lot less special than he did a year ago just guesting on Dark. They could heat him up whenever they wanted to given his size and agility and presence though. I don't usually invoke "If only ROH had it own show..." but when I do it's not with some blatantly false comment about how there would be less Jay Lethal or more Miro. If there was a ROH show they could protect Toa more by having him crush guys. Totally different thing. Anyway, It's good to have Wardlow in situations where he can do all sorts of different things, but it's also important he's not selling too much in situations when he shouldn't. I'll talk about Wednesday's card closer to Wednesday but I'm looking forward to it.

  3. Shibata-Cassidy with Tyson on commentary suggests anything can happen on (It's) Rampage (Baby)! I'd suggest this was an absolute success! Toni’s an okay talker, but she needs some better guidance with her direction – where’s Arn at? Oh, I think I might love the quick fix of a double turn with Hayter at the PPV. Tho, I’m swayed to stay where we're at with Jamie and the Doctor right after. Especially here after seeing them dismantle Rayne’r and Teenbeat Skye Blue. Yeah, strap them. Starks has the timing and ability to be a great mic worker, but not always material. Nonetheless, like most of his promo work – this was good. I like seeing promos here from the big players-Jericho, the Blackpools, etc. It’s a good way to get them on the Friday show and they should do it more often. I especially liked Sammy’s promo. I’m not generally into 3 or more ways, but two promos and I’m already sold. Sometimes it’s all it takes - and again it's something they should do more often. I am very excited by these Eliminator Tournament brackets. How does Ethan Page defeat Eddie? And when he does will the Wet Blankets then unite and take over (the Dynamite thread)? And fuck yeah I’ll take a Rush and a Bandido! Starks-Archer! Brian Cage-Dante! I love this! Ohhhh, I like a little Joe-Wardy tension! I also like a little Nana! This show is offering me everything I truly want and need from an early Saturday morning wrestling show. The main is just fine. I wanna get behind the Gates. I really like 'BISHOP' Kaun, and wanna see him blossom. To my eyes, Toa generally looks sloppy and lost out there, but I do sense some improvement. So game for Puh puh puh Powerhouse and Wardy! That Joe-Wardy tension is a lil bit thrilling too! I hated Rampages 44 and 43 (two of the worst broadcasts this company has ever produced), but 45 absolutely hit the spot! AEfuckinDUB!

  6. LORD HAVE MERCY! GOOD GOD Y'ALL! LET'S GET UP AND GET DOWN BY DOING THE FUNKY DUCKMAN! GETCHA DOWN-DOWN, YA THRUST YA PELVIS Anyway...... Bryan Danielson/ Daniel Bryan - Feels like there's no wrong answer for this one but recentcy bias has me thinking more of his AEW stuff than WWE and Ring of Honor. Gonna go with vs. Minoru Suzuki on the buy in to Rampage that one time. Matches vs. Morishima and Joe in Ring of Honor stand out too. Seth Rollins / Tyler Black - vs. Cena and Lesnar at Royal Rumble. Shield vs. The Wyatts. The cash in on Roman and Brock. Road Dogg - Don't know if I can pick a good one but the dumpster match vs. Cactus and Funk was at least memorable Fit Finlay - Okay so left field. Back around like... '06ish I think, he had a match with Miz where him and Hornswoggle just fucked with the Miz all match. Sasha Banks - Bayley, Takeover: Brooklyn The Miz - Are there any really great Miz matches? I guess the first run of Miz and Morrison tags were fun Kenta Kobashi - GHC Title vs. Suzuki, vs. Hansen (with that lariat), the one super famous tag with Misawa vs. Kawada/Taue Jack Evans - Steel Cage Warfare: Generation Next vs. The Embassy. I remember one Strong/Evans vs. Reyes/Romero tag being a lot of fun. Vs. Danielson when I swore Dragon was gonna snap him in half with some of the ways he was stretching him. Takeshi Morishima - Vs. Danielson at Final Battle, Vs. Claudio (defending the RoH Title). That one Kings of Wrestling vs. Morishima and I forget who his partner was but Claudio hit the UFO on Morishima which just.... one of the most insane things in wrestling I've ever seen Big Show / The Giant / Paul White - Curious to see what people say about him Hiroshi Tanahashi - vs. Naito at WrestleKingdom (WK 11). I was out of New Japan for a while but a few friends invited me over to watch this show for... another match that got a lot of hype. This would have stolen the show on any other night. Defending the IWGP belt vs. Suzuki (seeing a pattern here....). Almost any time he hooks up with Okada Mick Foley / Mankind / Cactus Jack / Dude Love - HHH, street fight (I know the Cell match gets all the love but I stand with this one being better). Mindgames vs. HBK William Regal - OH, I can answer this for Big Show too. When using the knucks backfired. Kenny Omega - Okada, WK 11. Either of the Danielson matches in AEW. Kenny/Hangman vs. The Bucks (Revolution). Becky Lynch - vs. Sasha at one the early Takeovers The Rock - vs. Austin, Mania 17. Ladder match vs. HHH, Summerslam, IC Title. Eddie Guerrero - Rey, Halloween Havoc. vs. Lesnar. Vs. Angle at Mania (tremendous finish to that one) Darby Allin - vs. Jericho, second Dynamite John Cena - vs. Danielson Nigel McGuiness - defending the RoH vs. Steen. Steen sloooooowly walking out of the way of the rebound Lariat. Rey Mysterio - vs. Eddie, Halloween Havoc

  12. I'd not seen a Shibata bout either. I have seen a couple appearances post-retirement, and tho he wasn't wrestling he was absolutely electric. Clearly a very special talent. I always meant to take a dive into his catalog. If anyone knows of anything easily accessible online they want to recommend I'm all ears. Is it not true tho, that Toa feels less special a year later because he's been exposed as an underdeveloped-for-TV talent? I agree he has some size and presence, but his agility is a bit more of a question mark. His whole posture on offense and defense seems a little off to me. I really kinda wish they'd given Kaun more of a mentor to tag with. Bring back Tully!

  16. That overdelivered more than Dynamite undelivered! I actually don’t know Shibata, I have that huge 2004ish-2021 (with limited exceptions) gap in my fandom. But the video packages and announcers, combined with the in-ring action, got it across. Such a great match, got across the danger, OC’s mind games played a different role, they matched well and Shibata played along while also beating the tar out of OC. Tyson, oddly, added to the commentary. Hayter/Baker vs Blue Rayne was almost miraculous. Britt and Madison paired together almost impeccably, which was especially wild considering how Rayne has been so far. And then Hayter and young Skye Blue just tore into each other, damn they worked well together, stiff blows and smooth moves. That singles match next week has serious sleeper potential. I’m a Ricky Starks fan but that segment did no favors. Main was another winner, Joe and Toa really synced, just beating the shit out of each other. Joe was better here than Wednesday. Kaun was probably the least tonight, partially because they kept Wardlow in reserve for hot tag when they work might pair better for long stretches. In the aftermath, Wardlow-Hobbs is a HELL YEAH but the tease of Wardlow-Joe was something to look forward to as well.

  18. Miami Sweet Heat bring THE HEAT~! They advance to the finals of the tag tournament, meanwhile other teams are still just now entering the tournament! the Coach Campanelli/Randi Rah Rah dynamic is hilarious. Coach reminds me a bit of Tenille Dashwood, she is great. Sahara/Penelope was great, two of WOW's best. Main event was similar to Beast/Tormenta in it's quickness. Fun WCW style ending "we're outta time we gotta go, see ya next week!"

  23. Run Sweetheart Run, on Prime. not gonna lie, strongly disagree with this review. Not really over the top, and legitimately doesn't have much violence either. That last part about reshoots makes a lot of sense because this movie, imo, was all over the place story wise. mad props to the lead, Ella Balinska, she carries like 70% of the movie on her shoulders, when the dude who played crazy uncle Greyjoy wasnt chewing up the scenery, Ella is practically a one woman show, making the movie watchable in spite of writing and shitty wooden background characters

  25. NFL football is the only one I truly care about that has never made it worth it for me. I've seen the Pistons win it all. I had the glorious 1997 Wolverines football. I'm not a huge hockey fan, but I've seen the Stanley Cup come to Detroit several times. The Lions though, what do I have for 30+ years as a fan? A playoff win. One.

  27. A taped Smackdown ya say. Man, WWE’s sound department has so poorly applied crowd sweetening effects for over three decades now! So bad, and not exactly the hardest fix. Can I have a temp job? Liv Morgan and Deville was a bit of skim, but I liked what I saw. Tenille Dashwood! Emma they call her. During my regular Impact viewing run, earlier this year, I always saw great potential in this Australian Superstar. She has great presentation - and I suspect could probably help others achieve a less tacky look too. Things were going fine here for Emma until it became an Impact segment. Lots of packages and shit to FFWD by (no complaints). LA Knight and Riccochet was a just fine(!) WWE TV match. Should I refer to LA Knight as a guilty pleasure? I’d kinda love for Ricochet to make the jump to AEDub. Maybe a trade for Andrade and Buddy? Bizarre (don't ya say) Bray Wyatt segment. Well, I didn’t FFWD. I did FFWD the New Day and Usos. I’ll certainly watch the match tho. And I did like the ‘all hell breaks loose’ portion here. I fucking love corny Rey Mysterio Jr promos - pure WWE style at it's best! I liked Natalya-Bazler for the closing moments and post match. That’s how you do blood! Ooooh man, I love the pairing of Bazler and Rousey. Is it wrong that I not only don’t hate Rhonda Rousey but think she kinda rules? As an addendum: I’d never seen her fight nor wrestle before this HHHWWEEra. Further, I don’t disqualify her Art for her past unsurprising (a bit expected even) and truly awful political or otherwise life takes. She should lose a bit of money like Jones for her stupidity. But I also know some good hearted ppl with really bad ideas from time to time (don’t we all?). I like the Legados and Nakamura having a little feud. I haven’t quite gauged the abilities of the Legados yet. Didn’t really dig the Trios from last week, but suspect they have something to offer. In the words of the late great Gorilla Monsoon this was truly ‘A Main Event match in any arena anywhere in the world’ or something like that. I am so thankful for this logical and consistently entertaining HHHeymanWWEra. It offers me true superstars like arguably my favorite wrestler WALTER and the insanely great veteran Rey Mysterio Jr. This match was all I ever want all rolled into one match. I wasn’t chanting to my TV for these combatants to ‘Fight Forever’ but I might as well have been. This was kinda sorta a surprisingly terrific taped Smackdown. Saturday afternoons (my preferred Smackdown airing time) were made for wrestling. At least here in Canada where we don't give a fuck about College/University sports. Oh, I shouldn't speak for everyone.

  30. Well, I'll take a swing. I sawr it. Sunday morning Superstars did not disappoint. FFWD as always was a trusty friend of WWE broadcasts (speaking mostly of looong entrances and lengthy recaps; I skimmed very little of the action here). Lashley v Lesnar was a nice addition to Hoss week! I think Brian Cage-Joe gets my vote, or at least a second view. I’m a sucker for a submission-into-pinfall-loss finish. Seems like a Heyman booking. This is my first SAUDI show and it wouldn’t be quite right not to be reminded by the full body suit women’s bouts. The weirdness subsides somewhere in there with Io and Asuka. And I don’t mind Flip floppin’ the titles around a little. I’m also a fan of a Nikki Cross push. I liked Kross-McIntyre just fine. Not seeing the potential for a top talent with Karrion just yet, but he's been reasonably good and enough to justify the try. I wouldn’t mind a McIntyre character update – less Scottish warrior more Selleck - Magnum PI era. I dig this Judgment Day unit. Rheamania tho a little subdued here is bursting to run wild! Really smart booking with heel Dom, and he’s really making a good go of it! Omos-Strowman – Hoss of All Hosses on Hoss Week ALSO did not disappoint. Pete Dunne is the Magic Man that Ann and her sister Nancy Wilson were on about. No surprise, the Brutes and Usos put on a helluva contest. And then out comes the perfect wrestler Bayley! She’s got all the right heel moves and Belair is obviously a perfect babyface foil. It’s so rare that I’m not disappointed by a one on one ‘Hardcore’ match not being a straight up singles bout. This was not the case. These ladies laid out a beautiful match. I was worried a couple times there, and hope not to read of either ladies being injured from this. Bayley totally should have sold that table break miss longer. It looked horrific. Excellent finish to this that Bayley perfectly sold. Bray segments offer very little to my tastes, but I was making breakfast so I listened in, and this was fine until the spooky video. Nonetheless, I’m hoping (even tho I’ve only seen a couple NXT matches rom him that) his brother is the villain in the story. The Logan-Reigns main was fantastic. I think this might have been the first Roman Reigns match in full I’ve ever seen. I was impressed. Paul was impressive here too. Also impressive is the booking of Solo Sikoa. Really fun match to close out a really fun show. The Hunter Hearst Heyman era! Can't wait for the return of Cody boy! The AEDub fans angirly pushed him away, but the Universe loves him as much as me.

  40. My family and in-laws went to Disney World and mercifully left me at home over Halloween weekend. So I watched a bunch of stuff. Deadstream - I watched this because it was directed by the Winters, who made the awesome final segment of V/H/S/99. Not much to say other than it’s a found footage version of Evil Dead 2 with a wretched YouTube/Twitch streamer personality who’s been canceled resorting to spending a night by himself in a super-haunted house to get sponsorship money. He only gets paid by his sponsors if he makes it the whole night, so he throws the spark plugs from his car into the woods and locks himself in the house like a dummy. YMMV on the lead because he’s supposed to suck and he’s right in your face for 90 minutes, but there’s good atmosphere and he gets satisfyingly terrified and humiliated by all kinds of ghouls. *** Hellraiser 2022 - I liked this. It’s probably my third favorite Hellraiser, maybe fourth depending on if I’m in the mood for the campy stupidity of Hellraiser 3. At any rate it’s a solid entry in a mostly dismal franchise. I did feel like things were telegraphed to where I could see the next story beat coming, but I didn't put together one of the turns toward the end. I kind of wish the subplot (essentially what if Epstein had the puzzle box) had been fleshed out a bit more. If they green light a sequel I’d appreciate if my boy Butterball was invited. *** Zombie’s Halloween II - I saw the 2007 Halloween in a packed theater on opening night, and I liked it well enough despite an infant in the theater wailing for much of it. Zombie caught a lot of shit for making Michael a hellbilly and filling in his backstory accordingly, but none of these movies have totally worked for me beyond the first one so I’ve always been inclined to give him leeway with making an interpretation of the bones of the original story. For whatever reason I never got around to seeing the sequel until now, but it’s become a contrarian cause de celebre so I gave it a shot. The first twenty minutes are masterful, and while the rest of the movie doesn’t quite live up to it’s ambitions at least it has ambitions. Zombie’s carved out his niche in horror (and become a bit of a pariah) by populating his movies with cartoonish characters with despicable worldviews who nevertheless are put through truly awful trauma in a realistic and tragic manner. He doesn’t glorify the violence, he uses it as an empathy machine for us to identify with characters who we were repelled by moments earlier. This is also a movie about Laurie’s trauma instead of playing lip service to the notion so that Jamie Lee Curtis can feel more dignified while acting in schlock. Scout Taylor Compton is wonderful. Plus, shithead Loomis FTW. Malcolm McDowell’s probably the most contemptuous son of a bitch character actor in cinema and he’s bringing it. (Just looked him up. Happy to see he’s alive because I definitely thought he’d passed recently. Also he was married to Mary Steenburgen for ten years following making Time After Time???) Anyway this thing is far from perfect, but it just has that certain something for me like Southland Tales where it’s brimming with ideas that may not add up to a whole but are fascinatingly cobbled together. **** I’ll probably write up the rest tomorrow.
