  1. This is where I'm at. I'm doing a Nitro/WCW PPV watchthrough, and Booker is an excellent athlete who is good at clubbering and is a solid bumper/seller, too. He's got a signature bump (kick whiff that leads to a self-crotching on the rope) that always gets a good pop, and he looks impressive flying through the air. It's not just that he was being compared to a guy in Stevie Ray who doesn't have the athletic ability that Book does; he's genuinely an explosive athlete who is good at bumping, selling, and stooging just to the right amount. He's basically always good for a good match, but he's not going to be in great ones very often. Partially, that's the nature of when he finally became a singles star (in an era where great matches were fewer and farther between because of the style). By the time he was ready for liftoff in WWE, he'd lost some of that athleticism and wasn't strong enough in other areas to make up for that, though he's always been underrated when it comes to heel stooging. I'd classify Booker as basically the line for "are you good enough in ring to be featured as a main event talent?" I think his career as a sometimes World Champ and dominant tag team member is right about in line with his ring ability and charisma levels.

  2. Dude if Herb Abrams was a multi billionaire or had access to a billion dollars somehow, he would have snorted his entire body weight in cocaine in under 72 hours. The autopsy report after that OD would have been amazing.

  3. I love that image. Let's talk about this card. I'm probably more into this week than any single AEW PPV in the last year. It's all the stuff I like and very little I don't like, even if every wrestler I care about isn't on the card. There are basically no wrestlers I don't like on the card for either night and the stakes all feel huge. FOR THE VACANT WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP - Jon Moxley vs. Bryan Danielson They already had a match where they really went at it. I'd like to see Danielson try to drive this one more towards being a "title match" and force Moxley down onto the mat instead of having a match where blood and violence is the end goal. Actually, look, here's the deal: Danielson says he wants the title because he wants to wrestle in title matches as title matches are the most exciting. Moxley says he wants the title for all that it represents and he wants to be given the ball to take the shot. The two of them need to get together and figure out what those two competing forces and visions and character drives looks like and build a match out of that. I don't know what that would look like but it sounds amazing to me. FOUR WAY MATCH FOR THE INTERIM WOMEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP - Toni Storm (c) vs. Serena Deeb vs. Athena vs. Dr. Britt Baker, D.M.D. Four ways are not great but there has been pretty good agenting lately. I think Davari might have been getting credit for some things? What makes this interesting are the characters/wrestlers involved. Britt brings the style, but there's a ton of substance with Storm, Deeb, and Athena. Deeb is one of my favorite wrestlers to watch this year. Athena's been tearing it up save for the Jade match. It's the only multi-person match on the show so it lets them get a bit more leeway with certain spots. I'll probably be more into single interactions and some of the alliances/betrayals/etc., than the overall match as a whole. 4-ways are more about the moments than the big picture most of the time. FOR THE RING OF HONOR WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP - Claudio Castagnoli (c) vs. Chris Jericho It's Jericho's career year and he's stacked the deck with yet another match. I'm curious how he goes at this one. With Eddie, it was the King's Road style. With Moxley, it was outwrestling him. With Danielson, it was getting outwrestled and having to rely on desperation moves or capitalize on a mistake. Presumably he's either going to lean into some aspect of ROH or he's going to have to work from underneath against Claudio's strength. FOR THE ALL-ATLANTIC CHAMPIONSHIP - PAC (c) vs. Orange Cassidy I haven't seen their previous encounters, but this is more heated than you'd expect given the sneak attack. Personally, I'd like to see Cassidy try to bewilder PAC instead of outwrestle him, but this will probably play out like some of the big 2022 Cassidy workrate heavy matches. I liked the idea that Kip was keeping PAC off balance for the first half of their All Out pre-show match. PAC has to keep the belt leading to the Ethan Page match in Canada though. FOR THE AEW TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP - Swerve In Our Glory (Lee / Strickland) (c) vs. The Acclaimed (Caster / Bowens) They have to figure out how to build on the last match, amp up the drama to make it think that Acclaimed aren't winning, then have the Acclaimed win. It's really as simple as that. Given just how good the PPV match was and how many tricks they utilized, I have no idea what the detailed way to do it should be. It depends a bit whether Lee and Strickland are going different ways after this or not and whether you want to build to a split. If not, I'd really lean hard into Keith Lee this time and make him a wall that the Acclaimed have to somehow get over even as Strickland shoots arrows out from behind it.

  5. TK making a Waynestock reference seals him either being in character all along or being on drugs. Or both. While touting the Northeast area as a wrestling hotbed, Khan said it’s truly the “crown jewel” of wrestling markets, taking a subtle dig at WWE’s annual October pay-per-view. “We’re running a lot of great shows around the Northeast, it’s so many great wrestling markets in one geographic region. And the — hey, I’ll say it, the crown jewel of wrestling markets — the real crown jewel of wrestling markets, not some BS overseas in Saudi Arabia. The real crown jewel of wrestling markets, New York City, is where you want to be, and I love, love, love, New York.” Khan then compared Grand Slam to the “Waynestock” event in 1993’s Wayne’s World 2. While the concert in the film faced several problems, Khan said fans should expect plenty of highlights from AEW this week. “If there’s still an opportunity to come on Wednesday night and you’re a wrestling fan in New York, you do not want to miss this. It is going to be, I believe — have you guys seen Wayne’s World 2? This is going to be like my Waynestock. I’ve been through a lot lately and gone through a lot, I’m telling you, it’s going to come together and it’s going to be like Waynestock. It’s going to be that one perfect night in New York City this Wednesday night. Expect a lot and you shall not be disappointed, I promise.”

  6. Booker's best of 7 with Benoit was fantastic at the time and pretty innovative as far as breaking out of the formulas of '90s TV wrestling. I'm not sure I've ever thought of Booker as a super worker, he was a great TV worker and an athletic big dude.

  7. He's had some of the best matches in the company's short history too.

  8. Booker's best match is probably one of the Goldust tags against Jericho and Christian. Those were really good matches.

  9. Part of me thinks that's almost sort of endearing? That you have this son of a billionaire who, despite being allowed to go to wrestling events, sounded like he lived a fairly sheltered or indoor life and so his touchstone for something huge and amazing is his experience as a kid watching Waynes World 2. It's just cute. I guess that's the best word for it.

  10. There's a big difference in not telling "the sheets" that one of your co-workers, and friend to a lot of the roster, is very ill and it's looking like it could be terminal and leaking that someone in the locker room is being a dick. The latter is much more acceptable as gossip. Spilling the former makes you a shitty human. Spilling the latter is "working".

  11. This might sound like an odd connection to make, but hear me out: Do you remember how a lot of people theorized that the uptick in Roman hate online in 2014-2015 was partially in consequence to Punk's appearance on AOW with the "... but you gotta make Roman look really strong" stuff? I have a similar theory that the hand wringing you're referring to comes at least in part from Punk mentioning in the lead-up to his signing that his decision was swayed by the locker room keeping Brodie Lee's condition under wraps when we were losing him in late 2020. Now that things are reported more frequently, I think that's something a lot of folks might have in the back of their head - like a weird, almost parasocial "Well, this isn't the AEW locker room I know..." I also think there's a possibility it's a sort of shadow-attempt at pointing the finger at recent signees/ex-WWE/TNA guys for being sources (which again, is super silly for all the reasons you've noted. But these are weird times). Just a couple theories, anyway.

  16. Hype levels are through the God damn roof. At first, I wasn't as pumped as last year (it's hard to top Danielson's debut and getting to see Sting wrestle live for the very first time) but the closer we get to showtime, the more I'm getting swept up in things. If Grand Slam is Christmas, I'm now out of the "Jingle Bell Rock fucking again? It's only October!" phase, and into the "It's Black Friday, let's pop a bottle and decorate the tree!" phase.

  18. I have actually seen this happen once. The other one that comes to mind is, and I'm going to have to text my buddy to remind me which player it was, but they told the guy to go get one of the balls hit out of the park. So he's out there by Kenmore and such asking around if anyone had the ball that was just hit out because they really needed it back. And they locked the guy out.

  23. It's certainly memorable, that I will say. He had so many great matches with Regal, Finlay, etc. but my first inclination was to ask if fighting Austin at the grocery store would count. Secondary to that, I remember really, really liking his TV title mini-program in early '98 with Rick Martel but I can't remember if Superbrawl was the best one, or if they had better on TV

  27. I work early (for me) on Wednesdays, and I have to catch the train to Kyoto not long after Dark finishes, (and by the time I get home it's late and I'm shifting into "get geared up for Dynamite" mode) so I don't generally have time to do a write-up for Dark. And I don't have time for a full write-up today. But. I have to say: I was really pleased when Ex came up with "Wardjoe" as the name for the Wardlow & Samoa Joe team-up. As we all know, making portmanteau puns on Wardlow's name is the highest form of humour and the zenith of wit and good taste. Also, KiLynn's finisher looked awesome. But, mainly, we get JD Drake back in trunks and a focus on The Workhorsemen, and my spell check accepts that "Workhorsemen" is a word now, and while My Favourite Pro Wrestler JD Drake is still a JTTS, he is at least now a YouTube Main Event level JTTS who gets his heat back after a loss, and that's not nothing. Really enjoyable Dark, leading into a week of professional wrestling that just might kill me. Off to get ready for work! See ya later! EDIT: Sonny Kiss' new ring gear absolutely deserves a mention as well. Yowza!

  29. I remember a great TV match with Martel and I didn't get the WCW PPVs at that time. That was a good program, Martel was looking really good and then got badly injured. I saw on Wiki the injury was at Superbrawl, and then he got hurt again when he tried to come back in the summer.

  30. It'd be great if he did out of spite for Garcia winning the Pure title, and if Garcia refuses to go along with changing the name of the title with him or something. But you can also have Jericho get frustrated in losing and demanding that Garcia turn the Pure title over him or something.

  31. Acclaimed have to win, but I'd like to see both Swerve and Lee pushed up into the main event scene as a consolation soon afterwards, maybe even without feuding or splitting. It needs some freshening up, and they both have untapped, exciting first time matches with almost all the usual suspects.

  32. By the time Stevie got that Achilles injury, you could really tell Booker had really worked hard on every phase of his game. Even the tag matches several months before that, he was carrying more than his fair share because he was getting big face pops when Harlem Heat were kinda heels but not really due to WCW feuding with the NWO. There is a good TV match he had with Lex on the 10/20/1997 Nitro where Lex basically puts Booker over post match with Gene Okerlund. He carried Lex in that match to the point where Lex was super impressed. I think everyone probably saw star written all over him.

  34. Since we're talking about Herb Abrams, my favorite moment from my old Beach Brawl VHS ($3.99 brand new at some weird off-brand pharmacy here in Ethan Page Country Hamilton) was when Craig Degeorge asks for Herb's prediction in the title tournament finals and he wastes not a millisecond in giving away the finish of his main event ("I gotta go with the Doc. I gotta go with the Doc."). Someone should ask Tony who he's picking in the finals tomorrow night before it's too late.

  35. Agree big time with this. Hoping they split him and King up soon so King can have the singles (championship!!!) run he deserves. Honestly I would have him turn on Matthews immediately, giving an excuse to try Buddy out as a face, then keep BK as our undefeated monster heel for ages until you eventually run him against Wardlow in like the Battle of the Undefeated Hosses. Unfortunately this seems like it might end up being Satnam Singh or Big Cass' role instead. But I gotta believe the Hoss of Black is better suited for it (plus, unlike Cass, he hasn't already lost to Wardlow once). Edit: plus this would allow, if Malakai ever returns, a perfect set up for King vs Black to determine who the real power in the faction was for all those months.

  37. If MJF thinks he's such a great draw, throw him on Rampage and see what happens.

  38. Seconded. He wrestles so infrequently, it actually kind of has a small-scale version of that Piper or Andre "attraction" feel when he does, which helps elevate things - and speaking directly to your point, I'd 100% put the Darby and Punk matches up there with just about anything else with a handful of exceptions.

  39. That Shafir promo was really Out of the Blue. I'm still not sure if it was Only Just a Dream. Perhaps at one time she was an Electric Youth, but right now she seemed kind of Lost in Your Eyes and mine.

  40. JFC (no pun intended) I was so glad when MJF wasn't on AEW TV or giving interviews for three months. I moved on and hoped MJF would move on too and just bide his time until his release (or got a lawyer to get him released). Now we'll never hear the end of it because Tony Khan didn't tell him he wasn't playing around and he'll have him sit at home until 2024. Tony Khan is a younger Herb Abrams.

  41. Jesus, TWO NFL games on and I get the feeling that I'm the only person in America watching RAW. Though it is 9:47 and the Bills game is for intents and purposes over. SO ONLY ONE GAME TO COMPETE WITH! And it is the fucking Vikings so maybe ratings will pick up for the final hour. It's Bobby Lashley versus Seth Rollins! Rollins outsmarts Lashley early while Lashley uses his strength to counter Rollins cagey wiliness. GREAT Missile Flying Knee by Rollins. They do a Keylock Sequence and Lashley counters Rollins wrestling with power- as Lashley Powerbombs out. Rollins is bumping like a psycho. This match is fucking GREAT. Fun nearfall after Lashley slams Rollins' skull into the mat. Rollins hits a Buckle Bomb and a Love Machine Splash for TWO! THEN Rollins with a Crossface that Lashley powers out of. Oklahoma Stampede by Lashley for TWO! GREAT counter of a Spear into a Pedigree by Rollins FOR TWO! Full Nelson by Lashley! Rollins hits a lowblow! Matt Riddle shows up to distract Rollins as Lashley hits the Spear for the win! That was fucking GREAT. Seth Rollins is fucking awesome. HEY! It's Kevin Owens! It's Austin Theory! This should also be good. Kevin Owens is FUCKING AWESOME. MAN, Owens is bumping big to get Theory's offense over. Owens is doing a Terry Funk and wrestling so that ANYONE could be in the ring with him and it would be about the same. Theory just needs to not show any daylight. And he doesn't. GREAT Swanton by Owens. FOR TWO! Owens is so fucking good. Theory is good too. GREAT FUCKING MOONSAULT to nowhere by Owens. BUFF BLOCKBUSTER by Theory! for TWO! This match is fucking GREAT. I am the only American watching it. Johnny Gargano comes out and distracts Theory and Owens hits the Pop-Up Powerbomb for the win! That was fucking GREAT. It's the Brawling Brutes versus the Street Profits! I guess they are just burning through a batch of great matches to punish all the Americans who are watching the Eagles and the Vikings. Angelo Dawkins tweeted about not wanting to hear about his Bengals. Poor fella. Butch does JOINT MANIPULATION! Butch is fucking AWESOME in this, going COMPLETELY JIM BREAKS in this. Ridge Holland hits a very nice Lariat. GREAT Running Rolling Elbow on Ford by Butch! Butch goes back to manipulating the finger joints of Montez Ford. It is awesome. Dawkins is wacky as a house a-fire after making the hot tag! They cut him off and Montez Ford hits a Doomsday Device Blockbuster! That's a fun tag team move. FOR TWO! Dawkins with a POUNCE to everybody! Ford hits a FABULOUS Tope Con Hilo! They go back for ANOTHER DDBB! But Butch manipulates Fords finger joints to counter it! The Brawling Brutes hit their rather shitty looking finisher and get the win! That was ALSO FUCKING GREAT. Okay, that's THREE great matches. Rey Mysterio and Matt Riddle versus the Judgement Day has to NOT be great. It would just be weird. The strange thing is that Rey and Riddle are great at selling an ass beating and being sympathetic babyfaces. Ah! Rey will be our face in peril. Riddle on the apron is something we haven't experienced before. Can Riddle do the Robert Gibson part as well as he does the Ricky Morton part? Rey is great selling and getting the crowd behind his STRUGGLE to escape the horror of the four on two ass beating being doled out by the Judgement Day. I'm guessing Austin Theory shows up and makes this match UNGREAT! GREAT counter out of Finn Balor mocking Eddie Guerrerro's Three Amigos. Riddle is good as Robert Gibson! I love that he goes all Steiner suplexing everyone. GNARLY Chokeslam onto the apron by Damien Priest from inside the ring. Rhea Ripley CHEATS! Riddle has transitioned to Ricky Morton as Balor and Priest beat the crap out of him. Rey is more active on the apron than Riddle was, so Rey is a better Robert Gibson overall. Priest does the Elvis Presley sell of the kick to the head and it is the best thing I've ever seen Damien Priest do in WWE or ROH. Riddle makes the SECOND HOT TAG of the match! Rey is GREAT as Robert Gibson. A lot of stuff happens! Seth Rollins shows up. Dominik is a dick to his daddy, all to set up a Chokeslam by Priest and a Double Stomp by Balor! FOR THE WIN! Man, that is FOUR great matches! When Rey finally punches Dominik, it is going to be MOLTEN. Okay, Alexa Bliss and Bayley HAS to suck, right? You can't have FIVE great consecutive matches. That's AEW territory. This is good. Alexa Bliss is the least in-ring of the six involved but Bayley is doing everything she can to make Bliss look deadly. Bliss is a good sympathetic babyface and Bayley can bring the ass stomp. This is the best Bliss match I've seen, but I've never seen her wrestle as a sympathetic babyface fighting from underneath. Bayley is a great heel. Bliss makes a great comeback. The crowd isn't into it but it is a WWE crowd so there isn't much they get into. Fun nearfall on a Belly-to-Belly from Bayley. Good nearfall on a CODE RED by Bliss! Fun shenanigans on the outside! IYO SKY interferes and Bayley CRUSHES Bliss' face into the mat! For the win! POSTMATCH, DMG CNTRL beats the hell out of the Dudes With Attitudes! That was the best episode of RAW I've seen since I started watching WWE again. HHH! HHH! HHH! HHH! HHH! HHH!
