  6. I wish they could switch around this episode of Dynamite with last week's. This one needed the 8pm ET viewers. This one overacheived. I found that Sting promo delightful! It's like he's one of the definitive superstars of my lifetime or something. The payoff to all of this is going to be diminished by the fact that he can't, y'know, wrestle anymore, but they're bothering to explain his motivations in regards to Cody and Darby. The Team Taz involvement continues to fit and I hope this angle makes the time for a Ricky Starks TNT Championship reign, even if it's just a short take-and-give with Darby. That's the best I've ever seen Lucha Express look as a trio. Luchasaurus particularly was a lot less slo-mo than usual, their tandem offense was really crisp and Marko's insufferably aggressive lap dog personality reads better against rookies like Angels and Vance. I feel like they're rushing Hager/Wardlow but that might be a symptom of Warlow's unexpected absence. I want a fuck finish next week, a few more months of it and a blowoff match at a PPV, I really care about that feud for some reason. Kenny has that brain thing that Bret Hart, dudes in action films and a bunch of MMA guys have. He promos better in sunglasses, he's like the kid in Big Daddy. Easy fix, just keep wearing sunglasses. Don Callis sure doesn't hurt. This Belt Collector storyline doesn't mean a damn thing without the IWGP eventually, hate to say it, the work Kenny's doing is never going to matter as much as the success AEW has politicking. Perpetual Charisma Engine Miro is pointed in a weird direction right now but he's looking more comfortable every week. Can we get Sue driving the ambulance when Best Friends make their triumphant return at Beach Break? Keep putting Dustin in there with character-forward young indie veterans. Ten minute TV matches, forever and ever. Dustin Rhodes is the platonic ideal of the quarter-hour segment TV wrestler, has been for decades, and we should make some statues of him. Big props to Uno for gelling really well with him, I could watch this matchup a few more times. Shida/Abadon has been an effective diet Shango/Warrior thing, I guess. I like the fact that Shida's getting reps doing weekly character work. Bucks were doing everything in their power to make The Acclaimed look like a million, uh, dollars. Matt's kickout of the boombox shot was the "OK, they aren't winning" nearfall the match didn't need. Finally, I can't believe they never fixed the lip syncing on that M&Ms / Santa Claus add that's been airing for the last hundred years. I like to think of Billy West's Red M&M voice being the exact centerpoint between his work as the Honey Nut Cheerios bee and Philip J Fry.

  7. Taking up for JeriCOVID, in this economy? Are we in Sturgis? Body shaming isn't cool, as we all know. But NBA Twitter goes after its own. James Larden is a thing this week. They roast LeBron over his hairline. The crying Jordan memes. NBA Twitter is social media's version of the dozens. Everyone can and will get hit. Many were caught off guard. They didn't expect Jericho to still be wrestling, and they certainly didn't anticipate his massive beer gut. More than anything, last night showed how insulated the wrestling bubble really is. It's a niche within a niche. To @AxB's point--Jade Cargill, with the Shaq connection, would have been a solid choice to showcase first. Or Shida, being the women's champ and dressed like a video game character. Omega may have been too silly for the NBA crowd, but he's your world champ with Callis alongside him, cutting good promos. The absolute best person would have been Hangman Page, IMO. Young, handsome, athletic, an all-around strong package to put you in the best light. And his politics would go over better with the NBA crowd, had they looked into him a bit more.

  9. Hey, all. Just wanted to say Happy Holidays to all. It's been a tough year but with only 7 days 'til NYE we're thankfully in the home stretch. I also personally wanted to say thanks for all that lent a virtual ear in LoC when things went south the past couple months. When I didn't know where else to go to with whatever news/thoughts this place was a great one to put it out there. So thanks for that and Happy Holidays to all.

  13. Unpopular take incoming... Despite the playoffs delaying AEW, the show still finished higher than NXT and was, I don't have last weeks numbers around to reference, but sorta close to what they were last week even though they were pre taped and running later than the usual time slot One can argue they should try and capture the interest of casuals to grow the audience but I figure, and here's where I'm completely off the rails, maybe just focus on retaining the audience you have. This weeks numbers vs last weeks numbers would holder greater interest for me versus the opinions of a vocal group on one social media platform. What's next, we look at Tumblr or Instagram or reddit for their takes on a segment? Now we fantasy book for Wreddit, and maybe the week after we focus how to engage the TikTok audience? Again this is where I'm sure I'm wrong, but maybe just give your weekly audience compelling stories and characters to keep coming back. Call me old fashioned, and anyone with surveys and polling can dismantle my next take, but I think growing the audience by word of mouth still works versus counting on casual viewers flipping channels/not immediately changing the channel to engage and grow ratings. One group of Twitter posts being used to gauge interest is kinda like when two friends are debating a movie or something and one person says, "Well yeah but all my friends hated it." I mean, okay im sure that small sample group is going to be representative of the entirety of consumers watching and/or reading whatever the subject of the debate is. But if one persons friends are intended to be the measuring stick for whats good and what isn't, someone please explain the "box office success" of the Bayformers movies ? /Shitty take finished. Happy holidays all.

  16. I suspect they're calling AEW a bootleg WWE because WWE = wrestling to a lot of people. I don't think it's a damning statement about AEW, but it's the unfortunate reality. I work with a guy who knows I like wrestling, and I told him I only watch AEW on TV, and he said "Is that RAW?". Non-fans don't really know anything about all of the different brands and promotions and shit. For decades, the only game in town has been one company, so by default wrestling IS/was WWE to a lot of people. But yeah everything else I agree with. It's getting harder for me to ignore how fucking stupid people like Jericho and Hager are. It got to a point where I couldn't ignore Kanye West's political leanings anymore, despite him being my favorite hip-hop artist ever. Now I can hardly listen to his music. It sucks, but that's how it goes sometimes.

  21. More than anything, Sarah posts hunting pics (as I've been told, I don't follow any of her social media). Apparently, some fans complained and she pretty much said stop following her if they didn't like it. So that, along with not being on TV, equals less social engagement. Hardly a movement against the third-most popular member of the Riott Squad.

  22. So apparently the most heelish thing Jericho could do in AEW was wrestle the opening match of the show shirtless and been seen by NBA fans who hadn't changed the channel yet. #heatmagnet

  25. Tully better be careful or he's going to turn at least himself babyface because I don't think there's a soul on this earth except for the Stunt family who doesn't want to see Blanchard kick Marko's ass. I love Abadon but the neck-biting angle is atrocious. It was terrible when Shayna did it a few months back and it's terrible here. It's SO unrealistic and over-the-top that it completely takes me out of it. Do you think Aubrey would just stand there and look at a person who just had a chunk taken out of the side of their neck in real life? And Shida? She'd be screaming and rolling around asking for help. Medics. Anything. You know it was bad when the announcers barely mentioned it and they quietly went to break.

  26. A few random thoughts: The Abaddon/Shida pre and post match angles were freaking awesome. Between this and the Taker sit-up a couple weeks back, I am becoming a full-fledged fan of hers. Also, I heard the woman Shida wrestled had a pretty bad match on Dark in one of the other threads, which I didn't have time to watch before today's show incidentally, but I didn't think she was that bad at all (save for one vertical suplex Shida gave her that looked a little funky). I can't say enough about the Kenny/Don pairing. To my ears, Don is on fire like Heyman was when he and Brock were still fresh. Have to agree on Dustin/Uno being a pretty great TV match. I really liked the missed powerslam/finger stomp spot a lot. Jade Cargill is one of the worst promos I've seen in a while. Plain and simple. I have no idea at this point what this is even building to. I thought Brandi throwing water on Shaq was the payoff and we got our fun little gif and we all moved on? If/when Archer vs. Kingston happens, I wonder what kind of match that's going to be. I liked the matches both had with Moxley so maybe something in that vein I'm slowly getting sold on the Miro/Kip/Penelope pairing, but I'm not quite there yet. Their promo wasn't perfect, but it wasn't bad either. I don't know what it is, maybe the issue people want to cheer Miro but obviously they're full blown heels here with the wedding shit and opposing perennial babyface best friends. (On a side note, I hope Trent isn't being written out for a legit injury issue or anything - I haven't heard anything if so). If they were more tweener/faces, I could see them maybe capturing some of that random Dolph/AJ Lee/Big E energy. I was surprised that the Sting segment wasn't Taz' guys beating Sting/Darby down and then Cody/Arn/Dustin/QT etc. making the save. I have to wonder if this is heading there next week, cause this is like the second week in a row they've just kinda said their thing and then just... walked out of there, so maybe that'll be the final segment together to hype the title match.

  27. Thought this episode was a blast with lots of stuff packed in. Really enjoyed the opener. Thought Top Flight looked great, especially Darius' flurry of offense on both opponents. Loved Sting's Dusty impression. Jurassic Express' awesome finisher looked killer. Excellent post-match promo from Tully ruled as well. Not so much from Shawn Spears, tossing away the one interesting thing about him in Tully's black glove. so I guess that pairing is done with and the feud with Scorpio abandoned. Kingston was fun on commentary though the ending of Pac/Butcher was a little awkward. Enjoyed Dustin/Uno, fun little story there. Shida is always the best and I thought Alex Gracia looked really good here. Legit thought Gracia might win either by countout or a distraction rollup. Absolutely loved Shida just bringing the fight to Abadon now, felt like course correcting from the previous scared acting, this was perfect. Action packed little 3 minute match there. Real solid main event, the best I've seen from the Acclaimed for sure as they looked more like they belonged in there with the Bucks. The next couple weeks are looking like they're going to be loaded, I love it. Great episode!

  30. Hey guys, I'm probably signing off after today until January 4, so I just want to say happy holidays to all my e-brothers and sisters here on the DVDVR, even the ones I disagree with on shit like whether the Bucks can work and how Rise of Skywalker is the dirt worst. Let's all unite in our hate for Cody this holiday season! ? Seriously, though, it's been a real shit year. Here's to a wonderful holiday season for all of you and a much better 2021. Thanks, guys.

  33. It's important to remember that, even during the absolute peak of WCW's dominance in the Monday Night Wars, to a whole lot of mainstream press, WWF was still wrestling. They chipped away at that some during the salad days, but they never fully got to where, say, local sportscasters making a joke about a fight said "World Championship Wrestling.'

  41. Lots of neck beards look like pumpkins with hips. It’s not smart to isolate yourself from people that fall within, “the demo.” In all fairness it’s a double edged sword for AEW. Jericho next to Sting is probably the most well known name they have among casuals that would possibly stick around after the NBA was over. edit: for every Ric Flair, there’s also a Ken Shamrock.

  43. I just have to share this nugget from reddit about Moxley not defending the IWGP US Heavyweight title.. That sounds like a Dusty gimmick. "Per NWA rules as this match technically ended in a 3 count on Canadian soil, and therefore is unsanctioned by the NWA, the Minnesota Wrecking Crew retain!"

  44. What a fun evening everyone must of had tearing down other people's motivations without adding anything of substance. I'm sure hope everyone didn't get tired. And I was so hoping someone would join in with a pithy one sentence reply! We both got what we wanted! YAY! I sure hope this wasn't too long a reply for you to read. True things no longer true if its been said for a long time. Hogan didn't fall into the same pattern for his finishing runs anymore folks! We've been making that argument TOO LONG. I figured out the quote function. Yes, I am lazy. I did not watch a match from the Bucks in 2018 in another promotion in another country. You caught me! I tried to sneak past the fact that I didn't watch one match from a year and a half ago that clearly disproves my point. Or, or hear me out here. I've watched The Young Bucks in AEW where just two weeks ago when Matt pulled a Cody, no sold Angelico's finish on that super well sold knee that you just brought up and did his usual shit. Let me put it this way, if "name NFL quarterback here" throws five touchdowns one game and averages 1 touchdown and 3 interceptions a game, you don't look at the good game and pretend the average doesn't exist. On average, Matt doesn't sell accumulated damage to the point where it effects his offense. Congratulations, you made arguments though! Most people didn't bother. Like AEW is super good (because its not WWE you see) and if it's bad its okay because they are all friends and maybe it was on purpose? Because I have seen those arguments. Cornette is a raging douche bag who won't give any credit to someone he doesn't like. He barely pays attention to the shows he reviews and fast forwards through most of it. I try to give people fair shakes based on their wrestling and nothing else. Notice I don't mention Trump at all in this whole thread. I also didn't plug anything. I also don't think I said anyone wasn't talented in 13 pages except maybe Luther who has no talents. Also New Japan isn't AEW and I don't give a shit how over they were over there. Craig. Buddy. Pal. This ad hom horseshit is beneath you. Someone having opinions you don't agree with and actually writing them down on a wrestling forum is not trolling. If you don't like the opinions that have been expressed in a clear manner, you can disagree with them. But don't be all, "my opinion is the clearly correct one so if you disagree, you're faking it." If CoH or I are doing it for the lulz, we're putting in a lot more work than needed to get a rise out of people.
