  1. I watched the clipped version of this match last year and wished I could see the entire thing. Well, today, is my lucky day. The thing that struck me about this match is how well Big Boss Man fit into the All Japan style. He spent most of his career as an extremely mobile big man who has a lot of fun matches, but very few great matches. Watching this match made me think that we only scratched the surface of what his career could have been if he spent more time in Japan. First and foremost, he’s a great athlete. He moves around the ring like someone half his size, and he uses his athleticism in ways that make sense. There is a sequence when he ducks out of the ring, Kobashi chases him around the ringpost, and back into the ring where it feels like Boss Man is 100 miles per hour when he finally smashes Kobashi with a clothesline. It feels like he’s an 18-wheeler that takes a while to build up speed, but once he gets up to speed, he’s absolutely unstoppable. Another great thing he does in this match is sell. Selling is one of those things that takes matches from good to great, and I think this match is a perfect example. There is a spot where Misawa hits him with a diving clothesline, and instead of falling he leans backwards, trying to catch balance. As Misawa is trying to follow up, Boss Man is able to regain his balance, and cut him off. It’s a spot that Misawa does in every match, but it really puts over how big and strong the Boss Man is, because it doesn’t take him off his feet. Then the rest of the match Boss man is getting hit with big moves and is repeating the same mannerisms but is unable to keep his feet. It makes every strike that takes him off his feet feel much more effective, because we know that if they don’t hit him hard enough, he’s big enough and strong enough to not go down. For my money, All Japan in the 90s is the absolute peak of professional wrestling. This isn’t one of the better-known matches of the era, but it’s undeniably great. Misawa, Kobashi, and Dr. Death were great as usual, but Big Boss Man is the treat in this match. It felt like he was trying to prove that if given the chance he could hang with the best in the world, and on this night he did just that.

  2. I had to read this 3-4 times before I realized the meaning of the word 'bloody' here. I kept picturing a phonebook covered in blood arriving with a package of tapes and was unclear on the reasoning... I will also remember her for talking about how much she loved the girls and saying how she helped them before leaving them like "fly little birdies" but not actually really helping to get any one of them over. She basically steamrolled all the women on Raw for the better part of a year whilst never losing; had Becky get over in spite of her/at her expense (And complained about it to management), then lost the title on a fluky roll-up that she couldn't even keep her shoulder down for and stood around complaining to the ref which didn't really give Becky any sort of rub whatsoever. The fact that Becky is still over is a testament to her work/her character and much less to do with Ronda.

  3. I hope more wrestlers realize like Roman did that this is not and will never be worth it.

  10. I teach social studies on a reservation, Native run school, and just getting some of the Jr. High kids to settle down in class can be a real challenge. Plus they do not like to read and write(doesn't mean they can't, necessarily, although they tend to lag behind; they just won't for me) so response to my packets has been minimal. We have to do packets because most of my students don't have internet access. We have a 1 hr time frame for zoom for me to answer questions, but few have attended, but passwords were an issue so this week might be better. Its just been rough. On the plus side my grad school is almost over. I'm done with student teaching(still have to upload it, then apply for certification, though) and have three or four assignments for my other class, so nothing big. Its a wonder that I'm as sane as I am given how crazy my classes are at school, and taking 9 grad credits(with most of them being student teaching) and the virus on top of it. Pocatello is a better place to ride this puppy out that most of you guys have it. I know I'm lucky. . .

  11. I wouldn't get behind him, he'd just use the position to set up a reversal sequence ending in a series of top rope superplexes.

  12. He's actually Andre's dead half brother, whose heart was donated to Andre after he killed himself. Lucious had hooked up with his mom ("White Cindy" the crackhead) in his younger days and that was this big reveal a season or so ago and holy shit there's a lot more to it but I feel like I just lost 5 IQ points just typing that much.

  18. After his blind Twitter defense of WWE after Dean Ambrose left, if Seth Rollins ever gets fired from WWE, I always imagined he would be outside the arena, watching glumly as his bag and gear are tossed out of the dressing room onto the street, and standing behind him is the nerd from Robot Chicken: Nerd: "This is awesome! Now you're finally free to go full time with AEW and New Japan! I can't wait to watch Jon Moxley suplex you into a barbed wire spider web, or for you to work 40-minutes night in, night out against Sanada, Okada, and Tanahashi during the G1 Climax!!!" Seth Rollins: "Shut the fuck up! You think I WANT to do any of that shit??!!??"

  19. Is this about Roman? Because that dude would get a fat AEW contract, cut loose and look more like a star than he ever did in WWE. He'd never need to think about MLW or Impact. Also, Roman Reigns working an Osprey-Red style match would be dumb as dirt. Him not working like that is a feature, not a bug.

  21. Keep in mind, Vince co-wrote a movie where a morally bankrupt wrestling promoter kidnapped the girlfriend of America's biggest wrestling star AND had the guy's younger brother crippled and put into a wheelchair in order to pressure him into working a match. If I'm Roman, I'm sending my daughter to live with distant relatives in Samoa until all this blows over.

  22. Rochelle Lowen was the bag rib one the following year, but this was a great watch. I had always heard the Japan photo rib story as the reason Amy left so it's nice to finally hear the full reason and that there was more to it. Also that JBL had nothing to do with it as was reported at the time, nice to hear that she's all positive about him. Shame/sad to hear that Edge and Orton were the actual reason she left, she was my favorite from all the Diva Searches.

  35. Re: that dumb press release, it's just marketing. They're trying to make themselves seem essential because they know people will take issue with the latest edition of "Vince McMahon endangers the lives of his non-employees." It's basically a CYA - similar to the post-9/11 faux patriotism of "Americans need their entertainment right now!" They've set it up so criticism of their decision can be argued against by the "can't someone just think about the economy" idiots.

  38. Hmm, nothing from the orange shit-gibbon yet, but the CEO at the job I quit after they announced that they weren't going to be paying my regular stipend in February has started being really nice to me, even going so far as to send me $500 out of the clear blue. Perhaps it occurred to them that the editor of the leading review publication in the genre isn't someone that you want pissed off at you if you are a book publisher. ? Oddly enough they seem to have changed their core policy from "no more books that we have to pay royalties on" (which effectively killed off my imprint as 90% of what I did required a royalty payment, just as 90% of what I did made a profit, which is more than can be said for all the Public Domain stuff they published. They were fussing about having to cut a check for $200 in royalties for a collection of weird menace stories by Arthur J. Burks. The fact that we had to pay out $200 means that after costs we made $1750.00, now figure that they did the same on another half-dozen titles in Q4 or around $12,250.00 of which I saw $600.00 and our art director / sales manager / backbone of the company got around $1800.00, I'd have to say they are doing okay since I was just adding the new releases for Q4 and there are still 400 titles available for ordering that earn $15 on trade paperbacks and $20 on hardcovers thus onesies and twosies from the stock list add up to real money pretty quickly... Considering that there are only two places that publicize their products other than their own website and really only three or four shows a year where the books are on display,, and I edit the only print media that discusses/reviews their products (or not, should I be in a bad mood), I guess it makes a good deal of sense to be nice to me. ? The $500 came at a most oportune time as I was just going to take a stab at Joe Abercrombie's new series and I find that there's a related series that serves as a prequel of sorts that runs to seven or eight volumes. Fortunately they did a 10th Aniversary Edition of the first three books in the series that I was able to get for around seventy bucks total. You don't even want to know what the true first editions sell for... Suffice it say that for that kind of money I expect the author to come to my house and prepare a lobster dinner followed by a blow-job. And as I suspect that Mrs. OSJ might not approve of the latter activity, getting a great deal on the Aniversay Edition makes everyione happy... And in more good news, as they've suspended filming of The Walking Dead, there is no new episode tonight, so I can read James Blaylock's new steampunk novel without having to listen to a recap of The Walking Dead. I love Kathy dearly, but she has yet to figure out that the reason that I stopped watching the show isn't because I am so busy on Sunday evenings but rather that after several seasons of shitty writing the series finally caused me to say the nine deadly words, (which for newbies can be applied to film, tv, or literature and are: "I don't give a fuck what happens to these people." Anyway, off to read me some Blaylock (which I already know to be good, anyone familiar with Joe Abercrombie, please let me know what you thought, since in typical Pelan fashion I ordered a shit-load of his books without having reads a single word of his stuff (granted the person recommending him has spent several thousand dollars out of his own pocket to publish some of his work, so I take his opinion pretty seriously), but other viewpoints are certainly of interest to me.

  39. I don't get how this 1 time payment is going to help all those bartenders and waiters that are fucking broke and pissed right now. They should just come out and do that Miracleman "Come summer, money won't exist... But then, it never did" thing.
