Unpopular opinion time: Michael Cole isn't a bad announcer. He just calls matches how Vince likes them to be. I felt his commentary for Bryan/Orton/Batista and Team Cena/ Team HHH in 2014 are good examples of him actually selling the match well.5 points

I thought that was really lame and hokey. Surprise debuts are fine if that person or team has had a video package or something to that effect to hype them up. Instead the three of them just looked like random geeks that few at home or there live knew. If you do a surprise debut like that then it only works if it's someone the majority of people know.4 points

He really does not get enough credit for the no way out call. You could tell it was a legit emotional moment for him. And the excitement was real when he’s cheering for Eddie as he goes up for the frog splash. I have so many issues with him, but dude does have his moments4 points

That was a little over 2 and a half years ago! That was a pretty good run for them storyline wise, you had the really fun Lashley title run, the Broken Hardys stuff, and Rosemary and Jade/Mia Yim going at it. Now you have Allie and Sutter in AEW, Sienna and Sandow in NWA and the other 4 in WWE.4 points

Misc thoughts from the show: - Hikaru Shida - Hated that commentary didn’t mention anything about Soultrain being out in the Million Dollar Dream. - Interesting singles push for Trent. I like that storylines don’t seem to be isolated or stuck in a bubble . You have Best Friends picking up wins as a team recently plus Trent also on his own and having Lucha Bros’ number while Penta is also feuding with Chris Daniels, etc. - MJF looked pretty good tonight with some of the arm work he was doing and coming off as a slimey piece of shit. Loved the gum into DDP’s hand and Page just going “really?”. I wish they would have talked more about the whole ring thing because it's still pretty random and meaningless. - Great finish to Omega and Pac with Kenny going for the same pin twice but improving it on the second try. - Crowd was a bit cold for the main event but really picked up after the big TKO near fall. Glad that Le Champion can still win clean from time to time. Some great near falls at the end, I thought they could have probably gone for one more Liontamer into a Small Package near fall before the finish to tease the crowd even more. Also, Dasha Fuentes couldn't keep her eyes off Jericho during the ring intro, there was some flirting going on there, drink it in man. - Excalibur: who beats up someone in their hometown?! JR: totally unheard of in the annals of wrestling history! - Loved JR again forgetting we can still hear him during breaks on Fite. When the jobber came out for Cody's match, "that's the opponent? Really?". Then getting frustrated "are we trending? Where do you see that?? I don't..."4 points

I was kinda surprised at how dark Flash was this week, and how well Gustin actually pulled alot of that off. The Bloodwork character hit his high note right before they are done using him lol. Something I've noticed with Arrow this season, is how genuine a lot of it feels. Then it hit me, of course it does, because these actors are saying goodbye to each other at the same time the characters are. That last scene with Laurel and Quentin was easily the best acting Katie Cassidy has ever done. Only one more proper episode of Arrow ?4 points

You're missing the part about Buzz charging Taker $2500 (in 1980s dollars) to get stretched and nothing else. Those were expensive dogs. Quotes from Cappetta's book, Taker about Buzz Sawyer: "I promised myself I would track that Sawyer down and make that motherfucker pay for what he did to me." Taker later confronts Sawyer in a WCW dressing room and says "Remember me, motherfucker? Is it coming back to you, you worthless piece of shit?" Sawyer and Taker have a verbal fight that is broken up, when Sawyer leaves Taker adds "I'm going to break that asshole's legs. His legs and arms. All of them." Cappetta suggested he just let it go, Taker responds "I'm going to wait until the time is right. I'll catch him alone. Buzz won't know what hit him. It'll be quick." Which never happened since Buzz left WCW weeks later and died about two years after that. Unless that was when the time was right...4 points

Yeah... I consider myself a hardcore though my viewings of the indies has dried up since NXT and now AEW have pretty much sucked up 99% of the great wrestlers I was into and I didn't even recognize The Butcher & The Blade at first glance because Parks looks so radically different with the bushier beard and snarl compared to his time on the indies and Impact. Same thing with Williams. If I don't recognize these guys, that's not good. I love Excalibur but he did indeed sound like a vintage TNA bitch on that take. I don't love a "WHO IS THAT?" call either, so, as Craig said, if it's not obvious give 'em some hype videos to educate people. Nobody was shocked in a good way by these guys because they didn't know who they were and were probably disappointed it wasn't Marty under the mask. Now when/if Scurll does show up, that's the kind of guy that doesn't need hype videos because the majority of the audience will know him and the reaction will be tremendous. People at home who don't know him will likely want to find out because of the reaction. People last night probably didn't really give a damn with the crowd's reaction.3 points

This is an example of Michael Cole's best quality as an announcer...he's the only announcer who really gets the importance of someone winning the World Title for the first time. Cole may get into the same "We have a new World Champion! History has been made here!"...but he always gives that little bit more when it's "We have a NEW World Champion! [Wrestler] has just made it to the top of the mountain and etched their name among the all-time greats!" All of Cole's best calls- Daniel Bryan at WM30, Eddie Guerrero at No Way Out 2004, Mankind on 1/4/99...all amazing calls that some of the better announcers would have dropped and failed to make as important.3 points

DVDVR Board before the show: There's not enough interviews! We need to be able to understand who these people are any why they're fighting! DVDVR Board after the show: Too much talking! It's just like WWE! Where's my alternative? Yes, I know that it was different people making the opposing points and there is no hivemind. I just thought it was funny.3 points

I thought this show was a blast and with another really hot crowd. Opening was hilarious. I missed Tony but the commentary was on fire at points. Popped huge when revealing Jericho's dad under the box, JR goes "Abdullah?" classic. Also Excalibur's later comment on "Really going for the over 50 demographic!" Loved the womens tag, maybe my favorite match of the night. Kris Stat looked badass, I'm glad Emi is sticking around as a regular, have enjoyed all her matches so far and I always love Shida. Omega/Pac was good stuff, like a condensed version of their previous match. Laughed at JR telling Excalibur he was coming along nicely after he used "bowling shoe ugly", great reaction. DDP's involvement ruled. "That wasn't a Crossrhodes, that's a double cross!". Cool intriguing debut for the Butcher and the Blade and a sudden switch for Allie, looking forward to more of that and Cody's always got some interesting rivalries. Cody winning with a figure four was nice and different too. Felt like a ton going on throughout the night and that added to the enjoyment, never dragged. Fun main event, never really thought Jericho would lose but the pop for the big near fall was cool and the finish put over Jericho strong. I figured Moxley had to be next in line for a shot with his momentum, the staredown at the end felt like a big deal. Good stuff.3 points

There's a show on the network, I believe from Japan, with an unproduced Michael Cole, where he is quite good.3 points

For those unfamiliar with The Butcher & The Blade. "The Butcher" Andy Williams also plays guitar for the Buffalo hardcore band, Every Time I Die. https://lastwordonprowrestling.com/2019/08/24/indie-watch-the-butcher-the-blade/3 points

An out of touch Politician once went into a Fish and Chip shop to try and look like a relatable normal person. Then he pointed to the Mushy Peas and said "Can I have some of that Guacamole" and everyone thought he was a wanker.2 points

To be fair, I vividly remember his call of Daniel Bryan winning at WM30 and the end of the streak, so he does have some iconic moments. Plus he’s been through shit like Jerry Lawler collapsing and having to push through the rest of the show, and by all accounts he’s very hands on and helpful at the PC, so I don’t doubt his professionalism and efforts towards helping the business. I just don’t particularly want to hear him call a wrestling show any more.2 points

Cole is a lifer, a company man, and good at his job for what it is. He's not a legend. There is no Michael Cole call that gets replayed on even WWE's social media. No wrestler hopes Cole calls their match because that's the announcer they grew up listening to, even though for many of them he is. The times I've enjoyed his announcing he's been straight play by play with almost zero personality, which is a skill unto itself but doesn't lend itself to gaining legendary status. My memories of Cole's career without looking anything up are: 1) Getting destroyed by Brock. 2) That one time he got shredded. 3) Eddie Guerrero/Kurt Angle from Mania. 4) When he thankfully turned face after Lawler died. 5) Orange singlet. For a twenty year career, that's not a heck of a lot. Full disclosure, I wasn't watching regularly between 2002 and 2009 but I've gone back and watched the big moments.2 points

Michael Cole was fucking terrible when he debuted. his run as a heel was arguably the all-time worst announcing moment. he has never been above mediocre IMO.2 points

It's surreal and great to see Andy Williams on live wrestlling TV, I just hope he still finds the time to record the next ETID album. Now The Dillinger Escape Plan have finished, they're the defacto best live band in the world, and I need new riffs.2 points
