  1. Re: the AWA and WWF expansion - It was Vince, it had to be Vince. There was no board of directors to hold him back or to tell Verne what year it was. The traditional method of make money on the house show circuit - lose money on TV and have supershows a couple times a year in the big cities - had been in place for 50 years but technology was going to force a change, and would benefit the early adopters. VKM's ventures on his own were unsuccessful and he was going to go into the family business and do it his way ("dammit" (sorry)). He knew he was right and in hindsight, he was. Part of that focus is that he can't understand why everyone else doesn't see it his way. If you don't, you are WRONG and deserve your failure. He believed (believes) that all the workers are willing to sacrifice their home life (on the road), bodies (schedule, steroids) and autonomy (gimmicks). If he can do it, they can too (see also: Shane M.: gigging, Stephanie M.: breast implants). The man is driven. Wrestling genius? Maybe - it depends whether your definition of wrestling ends at the ring ropes. Business visionary? 100% ("pal" (sorry)). His ambiguity in dealing with his choasen profession to the rest of the world is understandable when viewed thusly. - RAF

  3. Vince called moves by their names. He just thought they were all called Whattamanouvre!

  4. I can’t see Slaughter pulling off his babyface shtick against non-foreign heel opponents, Sarge vs. Big John Stuff or Mr. Wonderful is never going to get heat the feud with Iron Sheik had. Fans would have tired of Sarge against evil foreign heel pretty quickly, with Hogan you can rotate in every type of heel. Also no matter what Verne did to keep Hogan happy the Hulkster was going to New York whenever Vince came calling, even without the expansion the WWF was the biggest money territory and no one really passed when they called.

  6. And supposedly an agent for MLW as well. For a promotion with Teddy Hart and Low Ki I am sure nothing at all will happen

  7. You know what? This wasnt pretty but the actual shoulderblock looks like it hit with some damn hard impact. I will take that over pretty corkscrews that barely graze the guy taking the move any day.

  8. Joey’s curtain intros, outros and throwing to promos and matches was really good. He got over a lot of stories and the gravitas of the angles and had an edgy attitude that no one else had. Like most of ECW, it was very much time and place. I don’t think Joey was a move guy at all actually. He also was great at in-ring interview segments. I dunno, ECW was insanely story driven and he was a big part in getting it over, especially 94-97.

  10. I was wondering when someone was going to make this point. They made Beth the youngest person ever inducted in the Hall of Fame, and they bring her out now every time there's some major milestone with the women's division. I mean, I like her, and she's been good on commentary, but it all seems a little much for someone who was only around for 5 years during the women's least impressive era. And other websites are just plain wrong about Demolition.

  11. Love him or hate him, you are not an mma fan if you're not hyped for a Jon Jones fight. I hope he can follow through on fighting 4 times this year.

  12. Lauper should have gone in well before so many other celebrities. FUCKING DREW CAREY IS IN THE MOTHERFUCKING HALL OF FAME. HOW FUCKING DUMB IS THAT? And I like Drew! I like him a lot. I fucking love the Price is Right. But him going in before Lauper? Christ. And then I wonder why I get worked up over this dumb fucking hall of fame that's just a fucking sham.

  13. BTW - Harley Race's family has confirmed that Harley has lung cancer Here is the important - they say it isn't terminal. They say he is still planning on doing all his regular activities - including an appearance at a show next weekend

  14. The working well with your partners thing is why I'd actually make the hot take and add to the list of the best: Michael Cole is one of the most woefully underrated announcers in history. He's always been able to work well with his partners, for one, and when something is supposed to be important, Cole knows just how to make you KNOW how important this is. Probably the best Cole moment is that he seems to be the only announcer in wrestling who truly knows the difference between "we have a new World Champion! History has been made here as Brock Lesnar is the World Champion again" and "we have a NEW World Champion! Kofi Kingston has finally made it to the top of the mountain and etched his name among the greatest performers of all time!", and this difference entails every single first-time World Championship victory there is (Cole seems to get pleasure in running through the important moments of the first-time champion's career, and when the pinfall happens he always sells it as the pinnacle of this person's career.)

  15. Interestingly enough, one of the wrestling podcasts in my rotation has been covering this subject during their latest "season" of episodes. Our Vantage Point: Retro Wrestling Podcasts has been doing a Royal Rumble style segment covering the best 20 Wrestling commentators as voted on nominations on their Facebook page, and ranking them, two at a time, over the course of this "season" of ten episodes. Last week's show had them introduce Gorilla Monsoon and Jim Ross into the rankings. https://ovppodcast.wordpress.com/

  18. Here's my somewhat hypocritical self-justification on a similar issue. Chris Brown has a history of domestic violence against women. So did John Lennon. I don't particularly care for Brown's music. Lennon is one of my top three all-time musicians. It's easy to boycott Brown. But I think the big difference is this: John Lennon was murdered nearly a year before I was born. If I bought a Chris Brown record, Chris Brown gets money from me. When I buy a John Lennon record, he's dead and gets no royalties. In fact, some of the money likely ends up in the pocket of at least one of his victims. I literally can only name two R Kelly songs, but I have a couple MJ albums on vinyl. I didn't buy a Michael Jackson album as an adult until after he died, then I almost immediately bought his Number 1's comp CD. He's dead, you aren't enabling him anymore. When you buy R Kelly music (or stream it) you are contributing to his legal defense fund.

  19. Bix's really weird anti-Rousey fixation is...well weird. So, and I know this is really fucking inside baseball, but when did he get like this? Did the rise/toxicity of Twitter just turn everyone into an asshole?? On a more wrestling relevant topic, has there ever been anything written long-form about the All-Japan/NOAH split? I remember reading about it at the time, of course, and I'm sure Meltzer covered it in depth but seems like a good subject for a book. Related - any good books on the history of lucha?

  24. Plus, Slaughter could slot into the "blue-collar American with the value of hard work" slot against rich or entitled heels like Million Dollar Man. Slaughter as a face espousing the values of owing one's country as opposed to being a rich douchebag who feels that their country owes them would have been tremendous.

  25. We saw John Cena as "The Marine" for several years and he wasn't always fighting evil foreigners, he was just a guy that was very patriotic and big on the military. I think Slaughter could have transitioned into a role like that.

  26. Okay, I'll bite! Since he first started getting super-hyped on the indies some years back I made it a point to chase down Sami Callihan matches. I have to say that I was unimpressed and this hasn't really changed much, yeah, he's a tough little bastard and quite capable of working a brutal match, but he just leaves me cold. I don't dislike his work per se, he just bores me to tears, I could care less whether or not I ever see another Sami Callihan match and that's not the reaction that anyone in the business is going for. This is fundamentally worse than not liking his work, if I don't like something, it means that there are at least particulars to discuss and I may change my position as I look at things with a fresh viewpoint. In Callihans case, I simply don't care what he does.

  30. Usman does this EVERYONE. I definitely think Tyron thought he couldn't do that to him. Look at what he was saying in the lead up. He was talking about how Kamaru had nothing that would be the recipe to beat him.

  33. Other thing with Slaughter leaving was that his deal with Hasbro was seen by Vince as a conflict of interest with his figurine deal with LJN. For Vince to bide his time and wait two years also depends on whether the NY area business was strong enough for him to continue making payments to Monsoon, Skaaland and Zacko without the company defaulting back to them. I doubt had that occurred, they would have taken those risks either. That's not to say I'd like to see Kim Wilde or Belinda Carlisle instead of Cyndi Lauper. Actually Deb Harry would have been the best choice.

  34. Sure, but that's not the point. The WWE's history is revisionist. They could just ignore the way Demolition's run ended and just focus on the 698 days combined that they held championships. They could bill them as the most dominant tag team of the 80s WWF and it would be believable. Just look at how much revisionism they've done to Beth Phoenix's career. She was never nearly as big of a deal as they like to make her out to be now.
