  1. Is there a month you don't hate? It seems like this thread starts the same way every month?

  2. The name on the marque says "The Old Men of Internet Wrestling". Wrestlemania 33 is as many years from Wrestlemania 1 as Wrestlemania 1 was from the end of the Korean war. Now I will take my daily medication and go chase some kids off my lawn. Damn.

  6. Beth Phoenix is 100% a Hall of Famer. She was the linchpin of that division for a good while, and had some really good to great matches with several Divas. She's also, by all accounts, a pretty fantastic human being...

  7. In Back to the Future, they were in 1985 and went back 30 years to 1955. Doc Brown went to 2015 at the end of the movie. It's now 2017.

  8. I don't see her getting signed due to her age and injury history, but for this sort of event Madison Eagles has to be an entrant,

  14. Hall of fame show was good. You've heard some of the stories before, but I always like hearing them again. One thing stuck out though. I watch it in surround sound. I don't think anyone noticed, but the production area or the production truck had a hot mic on for nearly the entire thing. I got spooked at one point thinking there were people talking in my house when I was the only one awake. Come to find out that in my rear channel speakers, you can hear this chatter constantly going. No one is talking loudly, it's all just normal speaking tones. So anyway, I get to the end of DDP's speech and he does his "BANG!" thing. I had to rewind to make sure I heard it right, and I did. It was the trademark cackle/laugh of Vince McMahon. He must have really dug the end of DDP's speech. I just thought that was funny.

  20. I worked a couple cards with Psycho Cybil - oy vey. You knew when she was lying: her lips were moving. She tried to break in on the Indiana indies (and there ain't a lower rung then the Indiana indies) and I was hip to her then because of her rep from the small world (at the time) of tattooing. A couple years later she shows up in Milwaukee, and it amused the promoter of Mid American Wrestling to book her, despite the fact that he got the rundown on her from Moolah. Of course I get booked with her because we both had a "look" (kooky hair, tattoos, piercings) - ah, the '90s, that used to be enough of a gimmick back then. We never saw her after her second show, as Hardcore Craig potatoed her so beautifully that she took a real bump (for once). The moral is that you don't work a worker. In fact, there is a giant difference between lying and working. A work always benefits the worker, who knows it is a work. There is a frequent sort of camp follower in the business, folks who are attracted to pro wrestling because they 1) lie to themselves, and B- think that you believe them, and usually III: they think their lies are the truth by now. They can be fans, but in the porous realm of indy rassling, they try to get booked and occasionally succeed. Bikers who think that their (self-perceived, often) toughness is a substitute for training, unathletic types types who think they comprehend how to be a manager, wrestling school drop-outs, et al. Sometimes they do get booked, because they can get a hungry/desperate/stupid promoter a cheap rental in a desirable venue or some free advertising. These people never want to pay their dues and typically disappear quickly----unless they start their own fed... - RAF "i could write a book I am so full of stories"

  27. She's been on camera shown and interviewed as a trainer. I think if she were wanting a match, they'd straight up have her face Asuka for the NXT title. Simple enough booking, Asuka keeps beating up the students, now it's time to battle the teacher.

  31. Kurt's speech ruled because it was the Kurt Angle match of Hall of Fame speeches. He just literally chucked out high spots to get pops and each one was better than the last. Although oddly it was probably the one speech all night that didn't feel like it had twenty false finishes.

  32. I guess my gimmick is popping in here and just recommending matches while staying out bigger picture discussions cuz I have much less context than most of y'all, but I kinda think the 3/5 Stardom tag title match is like MOTYC, really, really awesome. Jungle Kyona and Hojo, whose February match I also really liked, just lay into each other. And Matsumoto playing big sis to Kyona works just great.

  33. The video game era would have made Watts' head explode. He would have been wanting to fire guys for losing to female characters. "Damn it, DiBiase. How could you let yourself be beaten by Chun Li? She's barely four feet tall and probably doesn't weigh a 100 pounds. She doesn't even look tough. You should only be doing jobs for that big Russia fella." .

  34. Dave's a cool guy, we met at a World Fantasy Con in 1986, I was a nobody who had just started a small press and he was already on his way to being a great writer and movie authority and we sat and shot the shit for over an hour. Some years later his SO at the time, Christa Faust, Poppy Z. Brite, Doug Winter and myself commandeered the video room at a Con (chasing out the three Dr. Who fans who had been camped out there for two days) and watched tapes of Manami Toyota and Akira Hokuto... Good times. We actually wound up turning on about a dozen people to joshi, so I put this one in the "good deeds" file. As for the Whovians, (and I like Dr. Who as much as the next guy), why the fuck would you spend hundreds of dollars to go to a Convention with lots of interesting people to talk to and things to see only to spend the whole weekend watching a program that's on TV every day?

  36. I didn't see the match so I'm just going by what someone said in last month's thread, but is it true that Matt Riddle took the mic after the Severn match and said "we didn't plan anything we just beat the shit out of each other," like how every match is supposed to be presented? Am I the only one that finds that bothersome?

  37. It also shows you how much wrestling has grown since that time instead of the indy scene dying out even more. I mean, yes, there were other independent promotions, but RoH was pretty much considered to be on the top of that heap and there were questions about how much life it had left. 10, 11 years later and I don't think anyone saw wrestling being this big. It's awesome.

  38. Because its WWE and we're all well aware of their feelings toward JR. What, all of a sudden they had a change of heart and want the old overweight announcer with the southern drawl calling the main event of WM33? And recent events had absolutely nothing to do with it? Please. This is a company that constantly pats itself on the back for every good deed they do. Its Vince wanting to look magnanimous as always. This is my opinion, I'm sure many will disagree.

  43. Manley's great, but I must admit a love for Adrian Lewis, he's such a great heel, even better than I was... If you don't think wearing a lab coat with "Dr. Dart" embroidered on it and screaming "turn out the lights" when hitting the out didn't piss people off, you've learned nothing from pro wrestling. ;-)
